IT's great if you have a very old and brittle, or otherwise fragile record you don't want to physically touch.. maybe for digitising.
But then, that the problem regarding general play... it's still digital.
The laser converts analogue lumps and bumps into digital output of 1s and 0s.
Which kind of defeats the analogue experience from this point of view.

I gather these decks had fairly mixed reviews - the sound output wasn't apparently as clear and bright as with a conventional deck.
Nice idea though - a record will never wear out.

Technologically brilliant it may be but what's the point in sticking a record on if you don't get the satisfation of "feeling the needle hit the groove", eh?

If you can spend $19,000 on this record player, your life is probably not lacking in satisfactions otherwise. ;-)

If they're smart they would enable 32-bit fp digital. Could even do more than that, whadifferenceduzitmake to them adding this software.
