Actually this was last Sunday. I picked up about 20 Glenn Miller 78s at a charity book sale held by the local Rotary club. All of them are in E+ condition. Price was CAN$2 a piece (US$1.50 or £1.25 or €1.40)

I also wonder about that. Although I know exactly where most of the records in my collection came from, I wonder about the origins of those that I bought that weren't family pieces. Such as, and especially a few of the early Victors. I wonder just who owned them, what kind of record player they were first played on, what kind of circumstances they lived in, stuff like that.
Two weeks ago I ran into my first nest of post-ww2 R&B 78s. There were 15, in a stack of about 200 C&W 78s. I was so excited, I even bought the duplicates that were there of two records. Maybe I should add that finding music by any kind of African American artist in the Pacific Northwest is a rarity in and of itself.
An older girlfriend got me into these. I haven't bought any myself (yet) but they are just lovely! Great for an evening in (with TONS of wine!) and a cuddle! :-)

I've just received 7 78s from ebay that I won as one lot for 49p (that's around 70 cents USA) plus £3 post. No titles or artists were given, but I noticed an Edison-Bell 'Bell Disc' label among them from ~1910, so they had to be worth a bid.
Three are fairly common - Peter Dawson, Scots Guards, and Black Diamonds. But the other four are reasonably rare music-hall - Will Evans,Arthur Collins,Tom Wootwell, and The Elliotts.
