We been given a bulk amount of 78's . We don't really know what to do with them but saved them from the skip. I think most of them are from the 40's and 50's. Where do I look to see if there are any rare ones in the collection.

It's nice to be able to say I can contribute a 78 now and again...
...As I've started taking the time to go through them when I see them in a charity shop.
(You never know... there may be an Elvis Presley in there, or a Gennet or Vocalion blues 78 that can fund my vinyl for me for the next five years - Although none have turned up yet ... Also have have been able to find the odd rare vinyl 10" lurking in them, like my Sidney Bechet And His Blue Note Jazzmen one, or the one I found yesterday - purely because it looked interesting - Arthur Smith: "Fingers On Fire" 10" on MGM)
But yesterday there was a big box of new stock in one of my favourite little secret charity shops - must have been someone's complete collection - and in there was what must have been a complete collection of Patti Page 78s - I'm not acquainted with this artist yet, but they'll probably be there in a month or so, if I decide to go back for them -
... but I did snag a Les Paul: Nola/Jealous, and another one which was just intriguing to me: Mabel Mafuya And The Junior Rockets: Phakhamile / Dumaza, on green Troubadour label, which, it appears is a South African disc.

I still haven't ventured to record a 78 yet, as I can't play at that speed ...
...But I've been meaning to try recording at 45, then adjusting speed of the recording in Audacity, s I'll use this as a perfect excuse to try it tomorrow (got to figure it all out), and let you know what it's like.
Most recent purchases:
16 records at a small-town used record store, including 6 Fats Waller in great condition on late 1930s, early 1940s Bluebird (two even with sleeves in almost new condition), two Duke Ellington records, and a Marion Harris on Brunswick. These are probably far more common elsewhere in the country, but not where I live, so I was excited. And a number of them hadn't been entered here yet.
56 shellacs at a rural thrift store, including a series of Victor Salon Orchestra recordings directed by Nat Shilkret in mint condition, and US releases of ethnic German and Swedish recordings on 1920s Victor and Columbia. There were also a bunch of other 1920s Victors, an Emerson record, and my first-ever Domino record. Oh, and an entire album full of 1940s Dixieland and small combo recordings on Commodore.

Bit late to mention it now, but I hope you didn't try this with your LP stylus

I know this has been reported as a no-no by some writers (and others suggest you try it), but just recently I've been trying transcriptions (of discs circa 1900!!) using an elliptical diamond LP stylus. The normal 3.0 - 4.0 mil 78rpm styluses produce a lot of 'chuff' effects, but it's much reduced using the LP stylus. No adverse effects on the stylus noticeable! I wouldn't recommend it normally - but when you are up against the most ancient versions of disc technology .......

Crumbs...
I did, but apparently mine has a "spherical" sapphire stylus, for use for scratching and other DJ-ery and the like - easier on the vinyl they says.... and appears to have been OK on the Mabel.
I shall cease and desist with 78s, however, until I have researched this further, and can be sure it is easy on the disc (not too concerned about the stylus... can be replaced).

Don't Panic MM ...
This page explains a little about stylus sizes for 78rpm - and note that they recommend their 1.0 mil as a suitable '78rpm' stylus - which is only slightly bigger than the 0.7 mil used for LPs.

I always want to kick myself for picking up 78s but I did it today. Here's what I got:
Enric Madriguera - No! No! No! (Brazilian Samba) b/w Brazil (a track I collect) HMV Victor label
Xavier Cugat - The Mexican Shuffle b/w Cugat's Nugats - Columbia
Xavier Cugat - Inspiration b/w Medias De Seda - RCA Victor 27602 - both tangos
Xavier Cugat - La Cumparsita b/w Caminito - RCA Victor 27603 - both tangos
these 2 are part of a set of 4...couldn't find the other 2 but the complete US album is already on site.
All above are Canadian 10".
By the way, I noticed if you search 'Enric Madriguera and his Orchestra' the site finds nothing. But he does have a page HERE. The problem I have is that all the labels show '...and his orchestra' or '...and orchestra' but all records are listed as by 'Enric Madriguera'. What's up with that?
I believe it's a site rule not to include "and orchestra" type things, which are generally superfluous and lead to multiple identities for the same act, depending how it's worded on the label.

Didn't buy -- but was given a stack of about 30 78s by a guy who owns a record store in a town near me. He does the usual LPs and has no real concept of/ use for 78s. Some nice stuff like Mel Torme doing Blue Moon
and some rubbish that I haven't posted yet.
Doesn't matter if they are rubbish, though -- cause free is good

I've just got 16 Alexander Prince 78rpms - yes, I can hear the groans about "..Not more Concertina Medleys!" - but we now have nearly 100 78rpms between 1903 and 1928, which shows how popular he was back then. I've probably got 75% of these 16 already, but maybe there will be some label variants, and perhaps some in better condition than my existing copies.
