Argo the label in the UK was an esoteric poetry, classical, drama and folk label which dated from the mid to late 1950s. The word Argo obviously comes from Ancient Greek Myth.
There was also in the early 1960s another label called Argo which grew out of the United States. There was (as far as I know) no relationship whatsoever between the two Argoes. Therefore they each stand distinct in their own countries with their different genres.
Are we agreed for the need to separate the two labels and not link them under the same name?
Agree completely. The UK label was owned by Decca, and the US one by Chess (started in the late 50's), and was renamed to Cadet in the mid-60's. Ironically, both Decca and Chess are now owned by Universal Music Group. UK Argo was being used by Decca in the 90's (when they were under PolyGram ownership) for issues of (I think) early music, but I don't think it's being used any more. I think the UK spoken word catalogue was hived off to EMI at some point, and they put out several cassette reissues; God knows where it is now with different parts of EMI sitting with Universal and Warners!
According to Alex Balmforth, they used 29 George St., W1 as an address and latterly Topic has released Argo material on CD "The Radio Ballads"
Harley Usill was the owner of Argo along with financing by Decca

Topic more or less owned MacColl so they were happy to reissue some of his work from the Radio Ballads.
Argo was bought latterly by Decca but they were completely independent in their early days.
