Just curious ... it occurred to me that injection-moulded 'labels' like this one were very very common on singles for a period. However I can barely recall seeing LPs with similar.

Why were they not used widely like they were on 7-inch records?

Singles were injection moulded even though it was understood that they deteriorated faster than a vinyl record...the life of a single was deemed to be short anyway..the Teen market..something new coming next week etc

Albums were expected to be used for longer periods and they were not restricted to the Teen market, Grown ups bought Jazz, Classical and soundtracks so quality reduction would be fatal to that market.

Discogs have an interesting article here

I have a feeling they injection moulded LPs in France for a period of time. I can think of Polydor and Vertigo labels from France with no paper label.

Yep, I have a few 1982/83 James Brown reissues from Polydor France that have IM labels.

Here's a 12-inch single

The Spotnicks - Guitars on 45

Great record nonetheless

I don't think that these count as 'injection moulded' in the same way that the singles do. They have paper labels. All that's different is that circle of vinyl around the spindle hole.

Sorry to correct you but these aren't paper labels at all. They are all French or German I think and were either painted directly onto the vinyl or the label was made of plastic itself, moulded to the black vinyl. This was particularly common on Polydor albums of the early 1980s. I think Vertigo had the same system which avoided using paper on the label area.

But correctly so, Fokeman! I bought some of the LPs from The Who's Phases boxset, when a local shop split it in the early 80s. They were pressed in Germany and had those tacky looking labels.....

Plasticrap indeed, but still a step up design-wise from the awful Polydor Who L.P.!
