Hi.

Wondering if anyone knows whether an archive exists of the British magazine, Melody Maker? I'm looking for every edition printed in the 1970s.

Looks like the British Library have paper copies, but it's not practical to go there and read the whole lot. A digital archive would be better.

Or, NME would probably be just as useful.

Here's hoping...

A local library membership in England often comes with a subscription to some periodical websites. including historic ones.

There was a MM archive after it folded, freely accessible, but it was very short lived. I think it it was also on the NME site for a very short time. I've never been able to find it, or a copy, again.

There's an archive of Melody Maker, Record Mirror and Sounds in the cupboard under my stairs, if the mice haven't got to them yet.

Do you have a date when your archive under the stairs will be reopening to the general public with social distancing ?

If my dear wife had her way they would open to the general public down at the local tip.

After Covid restrictions are lifted the National Jazz Archive at Loughton, Essex might be worth trying.

It's a shame Google News Archive stopped uploading scanned newspapers a few years ago. They had an extensive archive of almost the entire run of Billboard that was invaluable to a project I was working on and I'm sure they'd have gotten to Melody Maker and NME eventually. Although there's nothing in terms of runs of MM at the moment, in the long term it might not hurt to monitor Archive.org periodically as they occasionally get complete collections of magazines and other publications uploaded (i.e. Starlog Magazine, for example).

Thanks for the replies.

I've found this - lots of issues of Melody Maker from the late 1960s, but also a vast archive of other publications such as Billboard and Record Mirror.

What's more, they all appear to be searchable. Very useful indeed...

Helping Mal, or not, is there a repository of Newspapers that could take our old loved editions for scanning and storage ? Remind me if there is a national sound musuem - Bradford is Movies but I cannot recall elsewhere. I mainly have local newspapers I am loath to throw them but space is at a premium now.

I think the British Library collection of MM is actually digitised. However, I believe you need to be on-site to view them.

Recently been re reading old copies of Goldmine and had forgot how good some of the articles and interviews were. What a shame that they aren't available on the net but I suppose someone has to do the hard work..but a lot of good info is going to be lost. I suppose anyone could say the same thing about thousands of old newspapers and magazines

@Appletree - This is the same website TopPopper posted up-thread. Definitely a great resource, though it's a shame they don't have much by way of 1970s Melody Makers as that's the period I'm interested in. Hopefully still a work in progress!

It looks like 23skidoo needs to go to malcyramone to pick up the Melody Maker;s if they are from the 1970s.

Unfortunately the MM collection is no longer part of the Entertainment Industry Magazine Archive, which is the database I accessed at the BL. I wonder if it’s anywhere else?
