Charity shops, the last few I have been in around SW london do have a smattering of 78s (PM me on 45cat if you want the locations), prices though £2 to £5 per disc sometimes they have half price days. Emaus charity places up north tend to be bigger premises and both the stores i am aware of have a selection in them , some reasonable jazz or winifred atwell as takes your interest .

i have - under different user name , on discogs some 100 to clear for charity that i have put on sale and slowly doing my london location excess too - some here in 'my collection' have already gone in the past to shops but i have others some of which will be kept for a final MP3 recording sessions hopefully i think I have probably played every 78 in my main collection - but not the northern ones, it is also likely, should I be able to travel , that there is a good quality steel needle BSR Deck in HMV Chassis Radiogram c 1951 avalible at a reasonable price ( has to be otherwise i will rob the valves for another guitar amplifier project ) at some time in 2021.

We'd be delighted to see any entries and scans you can give us! I shouldn't think we have any Congolese releases here yet. Please see the Guide at https://www.45worlds.com/45worlds/45w_guide.php on how best to do this.

You could try your local Refuse site, some keep things to one side that may be passed on, have seen things like golf clubs and bikes on the side, and as that would be were most people dispose of old items, you never know.

Proved this one yesterday on a late-afternoon tip visit. A rather sad collection of battered LPS (what's most likely to be seen) - but also a rather random cache of 78s. Among them were some UK 1930s of sizes 7"/8"/slightly larger (The Victory, Eclipse, Crown, Broadcast) including a an 8" disc housed in one of the most fetching 78 shop sleeves I've came across.

Lucky to have seen them before dampness really got to them - a steel container in humid conditions a few degrees above freezing is NOT ideal for conservation.

I know what you mean. I noticed in his catalogue a couple of years ago there was a reference to his newest team member knowing "The Art of the Deal" which was a very unsubtle Trump reference. It probably isn't the vehicle for his religious or political views, but thankfully he doesn't really sell the kind of thing I look for. If he did, I'd probably just buy it anyway, even if that kind of thing isn't to my taste.

The charity shops sound interesting, but none will be open at present.

For whenever charity shops reopen, I'd suggest you'll get more love from the manager - and be offered more 78s at a future date - if you offer to buy the whole lot when a cache of discs appears on the shop floor.

Outside big population centres, I think many managers find them hard to sell.

Some CSs in London seem to think they are worth £5 or £2 each (maybe they are) just beyond my budget. There is a source that does 2 for £1 which is more like it for non-jazz/blues issues.

That sounds like your best local bet.

I did try to qualify my comment, as I'm well aware that a charity shop In Greater London or Brighton (to use SE UK locations as an example) may be a totally different beast in terms of pricing policies. The same is true of different national charities, or even different postcodes.

I do buy odd 78s where they are "orphans" that pique my interest .Buying lots of assorted shellac (or vinyl) certainly has its drawbacks too....

I get all of mine from Charity shops and are blown away at how cheap they are. Here in New Zealand we have 3 main eras

1. Hayes Middlesex to 1926
2. Australia 1926 - 1947
3. New Zealand 1948 - 1957
We switched to 45s around Aug/Sep 1957 (I have an Everly Brothers, wake up little suzie and Diana by Paul Anka from this era).

The charity shops will usually mix up the 78s with all the other records and often broken and damaged discs are in amongst the goodies.

Taking a bit of time, I often get lucky - I will buy anything that looks really old (Like pre 1925) and with royalty stamps (Being a philatelist - these fascinate me). Most charge little - $1 or $2 a record. Fleabay and Trade me are full of them, but some are ripoff merchants.

Just today, got 11 of them for $11 and one turned out to be from 1909!

There are plenty of 78's out there, the local second hand record shop here has quite a few in. We get asked all the time "Where can I sell or give away my 78's" Charities (Thrifts) stopped taking them in a long time ago. Look for House clearance places, we have a few of those round here, Also the local tip, most have a shop or a container were they sell items, just go in and ask if they will save all the 78's that come to the tip for you, for a bit of petrol money. When CD's came on the scene, and more and more came commercially available, lots of people were bringing tons of 78's, 45's and LP's to the tip. My mate was bringing me loads everyday, and those were just the ones he could save from going in the skips. As soon as they went in, he could not touch them. Try your local Charity Warehouses, they still have lots of them In the back. We have one here that only opens on the last Sunday in the month, all the stuff that didn't sell. Fill up a basket with 45's, 78's, LP's and all you do Is pay a donation at the till. Good Luck. H.

Shame I’m not a record collector, Fareham is not far from me at the moment and Kempton even nearer when back home September.

I will have to try the 515 Bus from Kingston again !
I answered a freecycle ad for old records expecting max byegraves LPs, Turned up about 55 78s ) and a few LP sleeves , only a couple with local retailer card sleeves. Listed all bar one (cos it needs adding) the 10in ones and sold 4 in a day - the early 1950s discs that dont have a 45 equivalent have a small desirability over on Discogs. Dont think I will add them here as that will confuse me and there were only two label variations that discogs did not have already. All except a couple are the 1950s with an escaped 1930s Columbia that I have asked a question on when adding here.
So thats 50 10in Discs for £50 to members here, but buyer collects or arranges postage and the £50 will be going to Charity.
