The English versions are usually duplicates of the existing Russian record, and they shouldn't have been input (unless the system wants bilingual versions to coexist). The English versions illustrate the problems with trying to use English when the actual film title/cast is in another language. Usually the English versions do not link to anything in the real world. The title in any romanized version seldom appears on a video in any language, whether DVD/Blu-ray or online film. So these English versions are essentially deadwood- they link only to the IMDb entry. Also, the idea that there is an 'English' language version of names and titles in Russian is unrealistic. Several systems of romanization for Russian exist. Systems evolve. Individuals choose to use their own unique spellings. Many Russian names have 2 or 3 common forms used in English. It's not unusual for IMDb to use 1 or 2 spellings, Wikipedia another, OCLC yet another. Many of my Russian records illustrate some of the vastly differing spellings found in English and other languages. Only the Russian names and titles are consistent, easy to spell and pronounce in the original script. English forms are the opposite. There are no simple solutions to this. Participants need at least some knowledge of the languages they are inputting. Technology for languages continues to evolve. The romanization solutions of the previous century reflect the limitations of the technology of that time, not the realities of the computer era. In my opinion, data should be input in the language on the item. Notes, references, etc., can provide links, but they should not be required. It's too costly in terms of manpower, as I think the system will realize, especially in the pen name mess emerging in books. The current system is slowly de-diversifying. This seems to be in contrast to the idea of 45 "Worlds." |

I already submitted the correction, but those are moving slowly lately and I really hate seeing this dupe. Thanks and sorry for the error. |

| mikewn Member since Sep 2020 7963 Points | Double check film title names as well as cast member names on other sites besides IMDB like the native language's wikipedia entry for a film. I've noted that IMDB is horrible about misspelling many characters for languages such as Turkish, where I lived a good portion of my life in earlier years. They leave out cedillas in letters and have S and c characters instead of Ş and Ç that are the proper spelling for some of these credits when there are also S and C characters in that language too. If we get it right and IMDB gets it wrong, more of that country's media owners will come to this site for info perhaps in some cases rather than IMDB. Note that a film I double-checked the Turkish Wikipedia source for proper spelling of credits here: https://tr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kurtlar_Vadisi_Gladio and the way IMDB spells them on its page here... https://www.imdb.com/title/tt1523491/ It's one thing to not have native language spellings of languages like Russian, Chinese, Japanese, etc. where Romanized spellings of title and character names help people pronounce these terms when they don't know the native language, but for languages like Turkish, if IMDB were really trying to "romanize" the spellings of these credit names like "Sadullah Şentürk", they should spell that name Sadullah Shentürk instead of Sadullah Sentürk the way IMDB has misspelled that name, so that people pronounce it properly the way it should be in Turkish. So IMDB is wrong, but 45 Worlds can do these spellings right. I'm guessing similar problems are also present in other languages of films they have online too. When keep some native characters spelled with alternate characters but don't with others, it creates problems. |

| Twistin Member since Jan 2012 2057 Points | Serenity [2018] Serenity [2019] they are the same movie (oddly added by the same user!); the 2018 should be deleted because it's the wrong date, plus the cast list in misordered and missing some character names. The two discs attached have to be renamed from [2018] to [2019], as well. Oh, and I'm pretty sure it's not Science Fiction, too. [Corrected. Mod] Edited by moderator on 23rd Dec 2020, 5:52 AM |
