I made this thread on the 45 forums, but I thought it would be an interesting subject for 78s also. What are the most common 78s you find at thrift stores, auctions, antiques stores, classified ads, etc.? Where I live, 78s are more common than 45s, and the most common 78 is ‘The Tennessee Waltz’ by Patti Page.
In the U.S., it's anything post-ww2 by Bing Crosby, Frank Sinatra, Patti Page, or Doris Day. One of the most common may be Bing Crosby's "White Christmas".
I think that here, in France, it's Anton Karas' "Harry Lime theme" on Decca. The record appears on every single lot you can find, on the list on every single seller, sometimes even several times. It's haunting.
I couldn't name the individual titles, but in my area, post-WWII box sets of Lawrence Welk 78s are abundant. 78s in general are uncommon in the city where I live, though, probably because it was literally a small village until the population exploded beginning in the 1950s.
I am steadily building up many copies of "Fats" Waller's 'My Very Good Friend the Milkman' -
also that (in my opinion) very over-rated tune - 'Skaters Waltz'. I mean, how many different versions of this were made ? I must have all of them ............... many times :(
.................. and yes, 'Harry Lime Theme' ...............

The Harry Belafonte disc is also common in my more limited experience of 78-piles - along with plenty of Mantovani, David Whitfield, Harry Secombe etc. items from the 1950s.
Continuing the seasonal theme of the Harry Belafonte disc, in 1940s-biased collections this one seems to crop up again and again (and I know this is not the featured side)
Even here in Canada, Mantovani and David Whitfield are dirt common. It seems that their terrible music infests every pile of 78s around the world.
I see many people saying Harry Belafonte too, but I have been looking for 78s by him for a while and I have only found one.
