Check using your phone probably but if on a laptop there is a way of the shut down / reboot system- the old F8 in safemode then shut down (? ctrl alt delete cannot remember) holding the mouse on the bottom right screen clockface thing there is an option to boot up another way , (maybe that was safemode) you can pick up a last known good configuration, run that, and then ensuring the updates is off you should e ok, maybe run a manual update in a couple of weeks time in the hope the bug/s have got solved (check the m/s knowledge base)

Is it just older machines that are having an issue with Win10 / updates or newer ones too? I replaced my PC last March and so far (he says, touching wood) haven't had any issues with updates or the OS itself. However I have an older laptop (c. 2017) that does encounter problems with Win10 / updates periodically.

The problem is not the age of your machine, but what's inside it. All Windoze systems have to cater for various 'drivers' to interface to each different manufacturer's chips (like graphics, wifi, etc) and sometimes things go wrong with updates affecting things.

I have a Lenovo All In One C50-30 about 5 years old and that's the machine I had the bother with. I have a Toshiba Laptop about 4 years old and it took the update no problem. The Lenovo has been downloading all the updates because I wiped the Hard Drive and had a fresh install of Windows 10 Pro. So my 21H1 update shouldn't be too far away now, I've got everything crossed hoping it will go through OK

I got linux on my little laptop to replace xp a while back... bit clunky, ultimately useless.
...besides, a couple of years back, as I recall, Microsoft bought significantly into linux, primarily in order to tie up security by pulling it more their way.
(Might be wrong about the whys' n wherefers, but might just end up with the same issues as it gravitates towards Microsoft.)

Is the only other option Apple 'cause I hate Apple computers. My wife has an iPad and I won't even switch it on!!

And now Microsoft have announced they will no longer be supporting Windows 10 after October 2025. 10 was supposed to be the last OS but apparently the next one is even better.

Now they've sucked us in with Win 10 I bet there will be no FREE OS Upgrade next time around
I suppose you have to start playing with raspberry Pi's - there is a Winx program for them. If what you mainly want is a way to contribute and interact with the net, run spreadsheet, picture, vid editing and write type programs a lot of the modern software is overkill for what is becoming more simple
