So I just discovered that the software that comes with my Windows PC (Groove Music) won't recognize the contents of some of my older Enhanced CDs. I don't mean the video and image files, I mean the music itself. And owing to the fact my latest vehicle has no CD player in it, I need to "archive" (I don't want to give the wrong impression with the R word) the CD so I can transfer it either to my phone or a memory stick so I can listen to it. And no I'm not going to pay some online service and there's no guarantee they have it anyway.

Any suggestions for a (preferably free) app for Windows 10 that will allow me to both listen to the music on the CD and archive the tracks? Thanks!

Doesn't your PC have Windows Media Player under Windows Accessories? Just click on your start button at lower left and then scroll down the menu to find it (though I gather sometimes an option to enable it might need to be selected). Failing that, itunes is still available for PC, and you don't have to have an Apple Music subscription to use it (though that would be needed if you wanted to upload your music to the cloud, and then access it via internet or phone app wherever you are).

I use Windows Media Player. It's probably not the best sotware, but it's perfectly serviceable and easy to use.

Do you mean like, hidden tracks?
A few years ago, I bought a little pre-amp I found on eBay. I'm pretty sure it was made by a company called, McLelland (It's been in storage for nearly two years and I haven't seen it since I took it there). It's about the size of two decks of cards, only has 3 knobs and can run on phantom power via USB cables hooked up to it or just it's own power cord if you're not using USB's. It was only about $35.00 and I can record from pretty much anything to anything! I always had it connected to my turntable so I could record directly to hard drive but, I could also go from computer to tape or CD burner or vice versa, and I think I could even go from one computer to another!

You could try VLC media player (https://www.videolan.org/) which works well for most formats.
My PC didn't come with a disc drive either so I plug in a USB DVD-RW drive, and that in conjunction with VLC and / or Windows Media Player does all I need it to do.

WMP doesn't recognize the content, but I haven't tried VLC yet. That may solve the playing issue but the making-to-MP3 issue might still remain unresolved. VLC has surprised me before so I'll see if it works for at least playing the stuff.

Does this mean You don't have a player to Import Your CD's?.

So going on the fact that You have Your CD's burned onto the Drive. VLC offers a little know way of Converting to MP3, from WAV or FLAC, or even MP4 from Video files.
First, Open VLC player, go to the top left, and click on Media. You will see "Covert / Save..." In the list, Click this, A Box will appear, and next to the large box, You will see a button marked "+Add" press this, Here You find the folder Your CD Files are In, Select them and press "Open" at the bottom. It will now appear In the Box. There Is a Button with "Covert /Save...." with a little arrow next to It. Press on the "Arrow", and Choose "Convert" at the bottom of the list. This will open the box to a Different Page. Here, Press the Little "Arrow" like before and Choose "Audio - MP3" from the list. On the same box, You will see "Destination:file" and a Button with "Browse" In It, Press This, and choose the Folder You want Your Finished Files, to go to. Here You Change, just the File Name, as It will be the Original one. So You Highlight just up to the DOT. No further, the file name might be, IE: Flac, MP4, WAV, Type In mp3 (NO Caps) Press "Save" and then "Start" and wait for the Blue line to Finish, Go to the Folder You chose and Enjoy the Music. H.

I was going to start a new thread for this, but maybe the same solution works for this and it is related as it has to do with tech that was put on CDs at a time when it wasn't expected that CD players would become harder to come by:

I accidentally (because I didn't look closely enough) bought a CD from 2004 that has the infamous copy control DRM software that caused all the controversy back in the day. Same story as above - I want to archive the CD so I can play it in the car. In this case, though I've heard enough horror stories about the DRM (and I know people got sued over it) that I don't want to roll the dice to see what happens when I put the CD in before asking first. 18 years is a long time, so maybe WMP and VLC just ignores it, or should I steer clear?

As far as I know, DRM just makes it harder - certainly not impossible though, as I've done it - to copy a CD that has the software. I don't think you're suddenly going to get sued by anyone if you're only trying to make a copy, so I would suggest that it's worth a gamble. Incidentally, what's the CD?

So enhanced CD is Mixed mode with both data and the CD music tracks. I didn't know it would be a difficulty. I generally rip with Realplayer or Winamp. I have W8.

Microsoft updated their anti-virus to block the DRM back in 2005 [article] but it depends on how old your operating system/anti-virus is.

Using AnyDVD should make it possible to bypass copy protection. I haven't tried on the specific Enhanced CD's but it sure works on everything else. At 109 Euro though it's a bit pricey just for a few Enhanced CD's

Long delay on answering the question, but I have several but the one that was causing me trouble with "enhanced" was Sarah McLachlan "The Freedom Sessions". Just today I found a "standard issue" without the CD-ROM material, so that one I should now be able to work with OK.
