Is everyone's Media Player working just fine? Mine has suddenly stopped displaying album data, so instead of showing, say 'Bert Kämpfert - Greatest Hits - 1995' with all the track tiles, mine now says 'Unknown artist, unknown album, unknown date' with 'tracks 1 to 17' or whatever. Only albums I have previously played on this PC show album data, which has been stored in a cache under Media Player.

I have been relying heavily on the album data in order to copy+paste the tracks when adding any CD, and it doesn't seem worth adding any new CDs until this is sorted.

I got a PC guy round and he couldn't find any problem with the installation. He managed to delete and reinstall Media Player, although it hasn't been updated since it was first installed. He went home with a few CDs of mine to try (he's too young to have ever played a CD), and reported back that they all showed full album data. I then took the CDs round to my old mate and the full album data showed up immediately. He's running Win 10 with a similar version and the same 'build' so I have to conclude the problem is in my machine, but I have no idea where.

Having fiddled about for a while, with a couple of restarts, it's magically working again
An expert sent me a link to minitool.com which I shall run through if the problem recurs

I get that happening quite often. I've always put it down to memory overload!

I've been having issues with it for years!
1. I give it a stack of songs to play, usually a few hours worth and, it'll play most of them but some it just refuses to play and skips right over them! I figure it's got something to do with the way they're titled so, I go into properties on each track it won't play and rename it to the full version I want it to have. I just did about 30 tracks this afternoon but haven't had the chance to play them, yet, to see if that's a fix. There's still about 80 more that I have to deal with.
2. Some of the titles I give it show up in the play list in Japanese or Korean!! In some cases, it grabs all these bizarre titles from thin air that I've never heard of before and puts them in place of the titles I originally gave them!
3. LOTS of the tracks just show up as "Track 05" or whatever number they had on their original CD, not the one I made and reduced them to MP3's from!
4. Those tracks it refused to play when I was playing them from my hard drive play fine when I copy them over to a jump drive and play them from there! And, I noticed this afternoon that most of them have the track number "01" or "07"!
5. I have a lot of tracks that I made into MP3's ON Windows Media Player and their extension comes out WMP but, the player refuses to play any of those! Why would it not play tracks it made with its own extension?? And I have no way to transfer them into WAV's or MP3's.
6. Some tracks have a Wav extension instead of WAV but the ones with Wav won't play on anything!
7. After a few tracks in the play list play through, the player will start playing the next track in line before the progress bar gets to the end of the track playing! Usually, it's only a couple seconds but, if I let it go long enough, it'll eventually start playing "track 2" about 20 seconds before "track 1" is done (according to the progress bar).
8. If I start deleting played tracks, it keeps telling me that the top track IS the second track in line! So, I end up with two copies of track 2, even though the top one still plays track 1! And they both show the same length!
9. Although this one I don't mind very much, if I have various stacks of play lists on it, I can go back to the very first one, or any one before the last one, click "Clear List", at the top of the player and everything goes away! BUT, if I click on the left arrow at the top of the play list, the first of those recently cleared play lists comes back!

As far as I know, mine never shows album data but, quite often, if I play a large amount of random tracks, links for the album covers (well, SOME albums covers! Not always the ones the songs came from!) show up in the damn MP3 folder the tracks came from! I keep deleting them, they keep coming back!! However, in most cases, the album info that DOES show up has NOTHING to do with the song that's playing!! I could be listening to Capt. Beefheart and a picture from a Jim Nabors album shows up!! I doubt I even have more than 2 Jim Nabors singles!! None of which I've even heard, yet! (They just showed up in a few lots I bought a year ago.)

@Break-In Master: Sounds like you are playing MP3s from your PC or server. In my case I'm playing the physical CDs on the PC. If you rename any tracks the data will be retained in the Media Player cache, and will show when you subsequently play the album, same as for MP3s

JJ have you recently got Win11 ? (update?) my windows player has also scrubbed the details - I have had to re-enter the details manually. Also I noticed the player/ windows will sometimes copy a CD file to two different places thereby when I play a particular album each track plays twice in a row! Very annoying, would be good to get a non windows music player recommendations I think?

Is the problem a Windows Registry thing? I recall having to tinker with the registry at work (I seldom start a Windows session at home) some years ago when a report generator program (RGP), which my section depended on, no longer worked after an upgrade from XP to Vista ... all to no avail, as (IIRC) I finally decided that a shared DLL which the RGP depended on had gone missing in Vista.
