Of all the records that we all look for and are so happy when we locate a copy I have found that there is a disproportionate amount of elusive discs by the late, great Turner Layton.....I have put a post up in the past but instead of decreasing my wants list on this artist, the list is getting larger !.....Where are they all ?....Do you have them all in a secure lock-up ???.....On my wants list are 7 Turner Layton discs which I am asking for any help in locating please:

"Safe In My Heart" Columbia FB 2421
"Only Forever" Columbia FB 2545
"And So Do I" Columbia FB 2563
"It's Always You" Columbia FB 2614
"I Hear A Rhapsody" Columbia FB 2666
"You Stepped Out Of A Dream" Columbia FB 2713
"By Candlelight" Columbia FB 2771

Any help at all most welcome

"This Is Worth Fighting For" Columbia FB 2795

Do you have any evidence that this actually exists?

Britain at war (a collection of songs and sketches from Britain's darkest hour)
Various Artists
Product barcode: 077779461615
Label: EMI 1366
Label match: EMIEM1366
released in 1990
It actually lists this particular song as being by Hutch, and Layton has a track called He wants to be a pilot.

Hi.....The ONLY evidence I have is it's entry in the book "The Missing Charts: British Hit Singles" by Steve Waters....It first appears in the listings on June 8th 1942 with that catalogue number and artist.....I would welcome being wrong but if it is incorrect, what should it be......The Plot thickens !!!!!

It's been suggested that the title is " This Is No Laughing Matter" which would make more sense

I have the Hutch track but this is definately listed as a Turner Layton track with that catalogue number.....It could be an error but if it is what would be the correct entry....

Hi Mike,

Columbia FB 2795 - "This Is Worth Fighting For".
The June 1942 issue of The Gramophone has this listed as "This Is No Laughing Matter" coupled with "Strange As It Seems" (you can borrow the issue here). This seems to be confirmed by the sleeve notes of the conifer Turner Layton CD (see here). I do have the CD, so can send you an mp3 of "This is no laughing matter" if you like. I suspect it was simply a cross-referencing error in the Missing Charts book, since both titles start with "This Is"!

Columbia FB 2833 - "The Lamplighter's Serenade"
This is apparently included on the Music & Memories CD "The Golden Age of Popular Song - 1942" (see here). There's a copy for sale on discogs (see here). The CD also includes Geraldo - The White Cliffs of Dover, which I seem to remember was one you were also looking for.

Thanks for the heads up on the CD which I have just bought thanks to you....I think you might be right on the mis-title on the Turner Layton......If it is not too much trouble could you do an mp3 of This Is no Laughing Matter by Turner layton as I agree that it is probably an error

Perhaps this explains the inclusion of “This is Worth Fighting For” in the book?

You are looking for 9 Turner Layton recordings?

“I Hear A Rhapsody” (Columbia FB 2666)
”By Candlelight” (Columbia FB 2771)
”Daybreak” (Columbia FB 2886)
”Heavenly Music” (Columbia FB 2973)
”I’m Sending My Blessings” (Columbia FB 3009)
”Spring Will Be A Little Late This Year” (Columbia FB 3058)
”My Favourite Dream” (Columbia FB 3080)
”Together” (Columbia FB 3100)
”I’m Always Chasing Rainbows” (Columbia FB 3201)
”Down In The Valley” (Columbia FB 3245)
“Gotta Get Me Somebody To Love” (Columbia FB 3334)

Is this list correct? I know a Turner Layton collector who may be able to help.

That would be great as I am at a loss to know how to get these Turner Layton sides.....As far as I know all the information is correct

I sent him the list. From an initial look, he thought he probably had most of them. He did say they were the rarer titles, which figures. I’ll let you know. He loaned me a Layton and Johnstone record earlier.

Okay so you don’t need
“I’m Sending My Blessings” (Columbia FB 3009)
“I’m Always Chasing Rainbows” (Columbia FB 3201)
“Down In The Valley” (Columbia FB 3245)

But you do need
“Near You” (Columbia DB 2399)
I’m wondering why this wasn’t on the list in the first place?

My error as my software only printed the FB prefix and when I came to check I found that there was another but with prefix DB

Sounds like promising news on the Turner Layton front. Mike, did you manage to get a better copy of "Down in the Valley" than the one I sent (which was both warped and unbearably crackly)? If not, then you might want to take the opportunity to potentially get a better recording.

Ah I see.

Maybe I should see if he has “Down in the Valley” too.

I was searching for “Lucky You, Lucky Me” by Turner Layton because it was the only recording of a song in a Jessie Matthews show (and I’m a collector of her work). This guy had it and made a video of the record playing for me. He’s loaned me a copy of “It Had to Be You” by Layton & Johnstone to make a transfer of. So I think he’s willing to loan me the other ones if he has them. I don’t think his record player can do digital transfers.

Yes indeed....I hope that this comes through as that is a huge chunk of my wants list in one sweep, I'll see if this happens and then I may ask for a better recording of the one you mentioned......I really hope that this happens as it will be a huge chunk off my list

Yes please.....I got this from another member but by their own admission was a very crackly recording

I’ve suggested he look for that one too. Will keep you posted. Probably seeing him again in a month when he can loan me anything he finds.
