Wow, that sounds like a very promising avenue! I'd no idea you could request copies of sound recordings from the British library (although I suppose it does make sense, otherwise what's the point of them being there!).

The catalogue number for this is wrong - it should be MR 3756. It might then also be in one of those archive collections.

I guess it helps that these recordings are public domain.

Thanks for the corrected catalogue number - it’s at King’s, but not the BL.

So many many thanks for all the effort that you have put in on my behalf......I was onto the British Library when they opened at 9.30 this morning and have started the ball rolling with a list sent to them and am now awaiting a reply with costs and instructions......You really have been a Godsend and I will let you know what transpires

Glad to hear that helped… keep us posted!

King’s College Sound Archive can still provide transfers of 78s - so you could try them for the ones that aren’t held by the BL. I can give you the email address to contact (it doesn’t seem to be on their website).

In theory, EMI Archives should have copies of their own 78s, such as Daddy by Phyllis Robins. They definitely used to offer a disc transfer service.

I didn’t know! I assumed it was usually spelt with a K.

By the way, Mike - I’ve added number 17 to the King’s College list. It had the wrong catalogue number.

I only paid 50p for it, so you can have it for the same price plus P&P. I want to scan it and transfer the audio first though! I’ll try to do that soon and let you know, if that’s okay.

As per the reply to your other post, you can see who uploaded it. Oddly, you are now listing it as one you “own”! The image uploader is this member: https://www.45worlds.com/m/spinning-shellac-1959

Okay, now it’s saying you want it rather than own it.

By the way, when quoting a message, please put your reply at the end of the quoted text. Otherwise it appears as part of the quote and we might not notice it. I think I might have missed some of your replies because of this.

Spinning Shellac 1959 doesn’t list the Phyllis Robins 78 as being one they own - but maybe they can tell you where they found the images.

"mister_tmg".

Can we talk sometime about the internet , etc archives of recorded material.
As I understand it the University of Huddersfield has a visitable (mon/tues) of British Items ( sheet music/ scores / discs / items originated by British artists and artists in Britain or recorded on British labels) The BL seems to be increasing slowly the collections it has. The United States websites have an amount of British material that they have incorporated into MP3 and other sound formats , though it is by no means comprehensive from universities and govt run sources. I didnt know about the Kings College ( Strand or other physical site ?) collection, are they looking to expand their holdings?

Re Facebook trading , I am finding actually US based persons are quite keen on British discs of all eras, It is always worth chatting even if no trading is possible in physical format (given FedEx/USPS and present day tariff/import charges) without care and crossed fingers. I find it interesting how the UK majors sometimes used US original metalwork/tapes but recut sometimes to "British" Ears and sometimes just dubbed US discs to UK masters , with or without various audio correction (this mainly in the 1950s ) I think I might be interested to learn how Philips sourced the US Columbia items (from a logistical point of view).
Would I be right that the 78 era can be chopped up into Pre WW1 / 1919 to 1939 ,(from Jazz to Big Band) WW2 (Soloists and Swing Era and Vocal Combos) Post WW2 - Crooners and here comes the R and B , Goodbye big Dance Bands ? to 1960 . There was changes in music , and changes in technology along with the arrival of the LP which gave as much change to UK Label marketing as the single did.

take a quick look at my latest collection page as I think I might have a couple of discs from your era , though might not be your interest that you might have overlooked completely

@Whyperion. The University of Huddersfield has a collection of British dance band 78s which are transcribed for listening online. I’m not aware of whether you can visit. I don’t think King’s are particularly looking to expand their collection, which is made up of BBC Sound Archive duplicates. Their main interest is in classical music though, so I’m not sure what they’re doing with so much “pop” stuff. The BL would have an acquisitions policy for taking new material.
