I know RM has bit the dust, but they were owned by Spotlight publications who are still around (I think). It would be nice if some title owners were to wade in and give a green light to posting old reviews etc. (spirit of keeping music alive and all that) but I suspect that's wishful thinking in the remotest sense of the word. It would add a lot to the site(s) though...although I suspect it would rather alter my plans for how to spend my days when I get to retirement age :sideways:

I've noticed a few of the entries on the 45cat sister site have reviews snipped from various magazines attached. I have loads of Record Mirrors stashed away (unless the mice have got to them). Surely including magazine reviews on the site puts 45cat and 45worlds, if they start appearing here, in the firing line of the copyright lawyers? Or are some publishers saying they are happy to have stuff put up here? I ask mainly because, RM used to have a disco section and a lot of ads appeared there for new 12" singles. Obviously, the records are the priority but as some are already creeping on to the (other) site, what's the official line on mag reviews and adverts?

Weirdly, I was pondering this yesterday myself, as I quite like seeing the reviews and ads and whatnot - if anything they are even harder to preserve than the records themselves so personally I'd like to see more of them.

I'm not sure on the legal situation, we had better wait for a view from on high - though I can't imagine on what grounds anyone would object, to be honest.

My guess would be that we should be fine if all scans are credited (i.e. with the name of the original publication), especially as this is a non-commercial site, but I'd be happier if we had someone with some legal grounding to say for sure... anyone?

This is certainly a grey area. I wouldn't post up scans of recent reviews but for vintage stuff it seems OK but you never know when someone will turn on you!

I did a bit of reading up on this.

Basically the whole issue of copyright and fair use is completely impenetrable and I failed to comprehend huge swathes of what I was reading...

However from the bits that weren't written in Sanskrit, I think we are probably covered by fair use, but I'd exercise extreme caution nonetheless.

...though I still contend it's unlikely anyone would be bothered.

That's kind of where I'm at.

If we had a front page saying features NME reviews of every indie single of the 90s then we may have some trouble but the odd review scan here or there uploaded by fans you would think would be good for everyone.

I thought the "Fair Use" thing only applied in the USA. Probably the way to go would be full accreditation to whatever is put up, the publication, publisher, journalist, and photographer. It might also pay to mention the record label they were signed to and the distributor, just to cover all bases. I wouldn't want to see the site burdened with any take down notices though, and Bod forbid landing anyone with a lawsuit...um...how is this site paid for anyway?

The worst that could happen is something has to be taken down. No biggy.

And regardless of copyright, sources should be credited anyway, as a matter of courtesy if nothing else.
