Palin essentially continued the long-form sketch format of the final season with Ripping Yarns, Cleese of course did Fawlty Towers, Idle did Rutland Weekend Television and The Rutles film. Terry Jones got involved with directing the Python films. Terry Gilliam also launched his own directing career, initially with Jabberwocky which was initially promoted (against Gilliam's wishes) as a Python movie.

23skidoo 9th Jun 2015		@biffbampow No worries - differences of opinion are what makes this site interesting! I only object to unfair criticism, but I don't see your comments as that at all. @zabadek The entire last season was Cleese-free for the most part. Cleese wanted to work on other projects (i.e. Fawlty Towers) so left the show that year, though he was still credited as a writer on some episodes and appeared briefly in one episode. He never really left the Pythons though because as I understand it work on Monty Python and the Holy Grail pretty much dovetailed into production of the final season. Incidentally I had a chance to see a Calgary dinner theatre production of Spamalot over the weekend! It was fantastic, and that was just using local actors. If you have a chance to see one of the major productions, it's worth it.

zabadak 9th Jun 2015		Yes, familiarity breeds contempt! I know so many of the sketches so well that I don't need to see them for a while. However, due to how it shook things up, what it lead to and how it annoyed my parents, it gets a massive 10/10 from me!!! :happy:



sladesounds 9th Jun 2015		biffbampow - yes large elements of it are dated but as other have said it is personal taste. I wasn't old enough to see most of it first time round - I discovered the Pythons around the time of Brian - but I can appreciate it today for what it is, a 1960/70s classic sketch show that helped push to boundaries of what could and could not be aired.



BiggieTembo 9th Jun 2015		Wouldn't say it was horribly dated, biffbam, but some sketches are now showing their age - not all though. However, as 23Skidoo mentions, it's the references to culture and art and taking the pss out of all that which makes it still relevant for me. Some episodes are stand-alone classics - the Pither Cycling Tour* for example. The Deja-Vu episode was also a good example of how a thread can permeate an entire episode, not just relying merely on abstract sketches. For me, the classic Miner Son and Playwright Dad sketch is the stuff of genius. Tungsten Carbide drills! What the bldy 'ell is that!



23skidoo 9th Jun 2015		@biffbampow It's always a matter of personal taste but I have to disagree with you tremendously on that. A few references here and there have inevitably dated but if anything I find it funnier as time goes in and I realize how insightful the humor was. That and also as I see more and more stupidity-based humor on TV and in film I have come to appreciate the fact that a good portion of the jokes in Python require the viewer to be well read-up on literature and well educated in history. They also weren't afraid to play with the format; during the final season the show become more of an anthology series as they began doing more long-form skits, almost as in preparation for things like Monty Python and the Holy Grail. On a trivia note: Douglas Adams was involved in some of the writing of later episodes and made an on-screen, naked, appearance in one episode.



biffbampow 9th Jun 2015		Horribly dated. Grows less funny with each passing year. Of course it has it's moments but I find a good 70% of it a crushing bore now.
