"Monks" the outside view is infact "Tom's Restaurant" (the view blocks the neon "Tom's" out).
Anyway, the restaurant is at the corner of Broadway and West 112th Street in Uptown Manhattan (4 blocks from Columbia University)... the interior shots were filmed at a studio in California and are geographically incorrect, to how the outside view looks. In some outside views, the Cathedral of St. John Divine can be seen at right, a block away (Amsterdam Ave.)

All the outside "live" shooting was on a studio lot in Calif... The stores they go in don't look like New York at all. There really is a "Soup Man", but the "Soup Nazi" was created by Larry David,.. unsure, if the real guy is unfriendly. I think there are several locations.

@Seagull Woman. I never found it particularly funny. I get a lot more laughs out of Get Smart than I do Seinfeld. The main reason is that I never liked any of the characters. I just found them whiny. Nothing against the actors because I think they're great in other things they've done (Veep, for example).

Probably the only worthwhile American sitcom since the early 70's. I wouldn't say it's overrated. Still get a lot of laughs from it.

I also find it overrated, I enjoyed it and have watched it more than once, but it's not the holy grail.

The show is also, I believe, to blame for the trend of sitcoms and other series ditching proper opening credits sequences that continues to this day.

That's a blessing then, watching continuous episodes of a show on DVD and every time a new episode comes on the theme/opening credits over and over and over again till I'm ready to put my boot through the screen.
It's okay watching one episode a week, but six in quick succession in the same afternoon can be most irritating.

Always found this show to be rather overrated, personally. Can't deny it made an impact, though. Even people who don't watch it find themselves familiar with some of the show's iconic storylines. The show is also, I believe, to blame for the trend of sitcoms and other series ditching proper opening credits sequences that continues to this day.
