 Harry H.Corbett as Harold Steptoe

Notes

One of the all time comedy classics, this began after Tony Hancock dispensed with writers Ray Galton and Alan Simpson. The BBC employed them to write a bundle of one off comedy shows under the "Comedy Playhouse" umbrella and one episode, "The Offer" clearly stood out and caught the public's imagination to the degree that was expanded into this series abiut the father and son rag and bone men... the grotesque cranky Albert from whom son Harold, who had aspirations and pretensions could never escape from.

Enormously popular, it ran for two separate runs.... 4 series between 1962 and 1965. It was revived in 1970, now in colour for a further four series. Unusually, given the shows vintage and the fate that befell most BBC shows, every episode still exists, though most of the early colour episodes exist only as imperfect black and white home video recordings made by the writers themselves.

It inspired two spin off movies and various stage shows. When the TV show ended, the BBC buried the show. In 1988, after both leading actors had died, they released various colour episodes on VHS and showed 12 episodes on BBC 1. These repeats were hugely popular and for many, the first chance to actually see this show they'd heard about from their parents and grandparents. From then on, it's status as a comedy classic was secure.

Remade in the US as Sanford and Son. Versions were also made for Swedish and Dutch television.

I was just reading about this show and I was amazed to discover that in 2005 one of its co-creators, Ray Galton, co-wrote a play that toured the UK called Steptoe and Son in Murder at Oil Drum Lane. It was a sequel to Steptoe and Son in which it's revealed at in the 1970s Harold actually murders Albert and spends the next 30 years on the lam but now an old man himself he returns to his old home where he is visited by Albert's ghost. Apparently, because Galton co-wrote it, the play is considered canon!

Anyone here ever compared Steptoe and the US version Sanford and Son? I've never seen Steptoe but grew up with the US show. How do they compare?
