Notes

Running over 42 years, Top Of The Pops was the premier music show on British television. Thousands of music acts appeared performing (or miming) to their latest hits and was hosted by a wide variety of DJ's and personalities over it's run. It was centered around the singles charts though for a short while in 1971 it experimented with an album spot. Unfortunately, most editions from 1964 to 1975 were wiped. Odd editions are missing from 1976 and 1977 but from 1978, the archive is complete.

The Beatles one and only proper appearance on TOTPs was transmitted 16th June 1966 according to Record Collector 250, page 135. They also report that a copy of the whole show exists outside of the BBC archive but found its way into collectors circles, rapidly changing hands so its whereabouts is not known.
The Beatles did Rain & Paperback Writer.

Good when we can add individual episodes (editions like bookworld I suppose)

Intro and Outro from Christmas 1969 Edition, from rehersal recording apparently, I hope so, Pete Murray picking his nose, or so it looks and a partly jumbled up closing credits. Actually for 1969 although a fair representation of the years charts , and I have a fair few in my collection, 1969 just didn't quite 'Do It' for me in terms of charting singles music.
Whats the playout track?

In passing todays 2015 Christmas TOTP show was actually quite good, although most groups are over-reliant on drum synths for my liking.

Thanks for that Mono. Just watched this and for the First 15 songs It's Savile. Then back to back Performances by all again featuring there New stuff for 65 as The First half of the film looks back at 64. And yes If You replace the Audio You can chop Savile Out. If nobody has done It yet I will add It to Cinema World with screen shots. H.

My favorite performances in Pop Gear were The Animals and Billie Davis.

It's the same with a fantastic 1965 musical film called Pop Gear (which I think was a spin-off of Top of the Pops) which was shot in color and featured great footage of The Animals, Billie Davis and other top UK acts of the day - including live footage of the Beatles though this film is never listed in their official filmography. I'd love to see this on Blu-ray but I doubt we ever will because, you guessed it, it's hosted by Jimmy Savile (who really does look creepy even back then). Even though all his intros were shot separately and could be edited out by the most amateur of film editors.

Agree, Mono. They could do what they did with TOTP2 which had a Steve Wright voice-over and just show the archive clips. Get rid of that daft running text this time though ("Did you know that Nick Kershaw's favourite sweets were Jelly Babies!" etc.)

It would be a typical knee-jerk reaction if they are going to ban the whole thing. Probably warming up the tape-wiping machine as we speak, or the bonfire, sniff...

By denying us the chance to see these episodes then Savile wins.

@biffbampow Which doesn't make sense because as far as I'm aware neither Savile nor Travis ever really interacted with the performers beyond introducing them. You'd think it would be easy to just cut their bits out. They could get Noel Edmunds (another longtime host who as far as I know isn't in trouble) to record some new intros, give some anecdotes and you're set. OK, maybe a few performers might have to be snipped out like Rolf Harris and Gary Glitter, but still...

Reportedly many episodes of Top of the Pops are being removed from circulation due to the presence of Jimmy Savile as host (if you don't know who he is, google him). That's a shame because so many famous artists performed on TOTP over the years.

My memories and moments were the early 70s which included Pans People **Hubba Hubba** every week.
Never missed it every Thursday night, a chance to see the stars, not just hear them on the radio. Magic moments.
Hadn't discovered the Old Grey Whistle Test yet so TOTP was the highlight of the week.
