@jordansongs Veep has been acknowledged as being based upon The Thick of It by its creator. Obviously the characters are different but it still sprang from the same well and I've seen remakes that resemble the parent material far less than what we see here. Incidentally Peter Capaldi is reportedly taking a brief break from Doctor Who to direct a few episodes next season as well. Capaldi is actually an Oscar-winning short film director so this could be interesting, though it has Who fans on pins and needles because if he's too long away from Cardiff it may delay the next season.

23skidoo, both shows were created by Armando Iannucci and share a lot of the same writers (Chris Addison also directs a few episodes) but it's not a remake of "The Thick Of It". None of the characters in "Veep" bear any resemblance to those in "The Thick Of It".

Apparently, before "Veep", there was a pilot for an American version of "The Thick Of It" directed by Christopher Guest but Iannucci was not happy with it and it wasn't picked up.

I've seen this series described as a remake of The Thick of It. Can anyone confirm that? I haven't seen the series but I imagine the key to it being a remake is if there's a character similar to Malcolm Tucker in it.

I don't think you need to understand the inner workings of US government to enjoy the show, any more than you need to understand British government to enjoy "The Thick Of It". I think much of the humour comes from the dynamics between the characters which can surely be recognised by anybody who's ever experienced any kind of working environment.

I sense we have very different tastes in TV Monolith, you keep giving my favourite shows very low ratings! :D

Speaking as a Brit, I'm at a loss to understand US political comedy.
The show is probably very clever but I don't know the ins & outs of the process and most of the names mentioned mean nothing, therefore any "in" jokes fall flat to these British ears.
