Bert Jansch - Avocet (2016)
From the label website...

The vinyl edition comes with 6 high-quality, heavyweight lithograph art prints (by UK illustrator Hannah Alice) representing each of the birds on the album, held in a heavy board die-cut gatefold sleeve. This unique packaging is fully interactive - the cover image is interchangeable with any of the prints, though each one is perfectly framable too. Remastered from the original tapes. Limited to 1000 copies worldwide.

The Yellow/Green vinyl may be rare issue but I think the Day-Glo Pink vinyl really suits the artwork.

Review
After an eleven year wait my favourite Numero Group compilation is finally available on vinyl and spookily they've removed the track I always thought stuck out like a sore thumb - Ellen Warshaw's cover of 'Sister Morphine'

This release would be 100% perfect to me if the sublime 'Eternal Life' by Shira Small had been on the bonus 7" but you can't have everything!

For fans of Joni Mitchell, Judee Sill, Judy Collins and alike.

Highly recommended.

Willie Nelson - Red Headed Stranger (1975)
Review
Seen my many as a landmark 'Alt. Country' release. One which Willie Nelson had to fight to get released as the record label thought the sparse and low-key instrumentation made it sound like a collection of demos rather than a 'proper' album.

Thankfully Willie won the argument - It's a brilliant record.

It really reminds me of a soundtrack album with no film to go along with it.

In 1985 the opening track 'Time Of The Preacher' was used to amazing effect in the UK thriller series Edge Of Darkness - perhaps someone should make a film based on the whole album!?

Thanks chaps. I'll amend the notes. I did think it was weird that my sleeve seemed older than the 'Highway' vinyl. It was bought off Ebay (for about £30 just before the price went through the roof) so it may have been swapped round at some point or perhaps there were spare sleeves left for a while.

Ivor Cutler Trio - Ludo (1967)
Review
Inexplicably rare and very very good. Mr. Cutler worked with The Beatles in 1967 but it doesn't seem to have helped sell copies of this great album. It took me about about 20 years to obtain a copy.

The magnificent 'Flim Flam Flum' is even more pertinent in today's age of Facebook, Instagram and Pinterest. 'I'm preoccupied by my Flim flam flum. Why? Goodness knows!' - Flim flam flum being Ivor's term for meaningless trivial fluff.

Lou Reed - Sally Can't Dance (1974)
Dual citizen as you say. The label clearly states being distributed in OZ & NZ so it was fine as it was.

If anyone feels strongly enough then they can add an entry for New Zealand.

Review
An English Folk Rock classic which has gained almost mythical status party due to 'legal problems' which seem to be preventing its much needed reissue. It did appear on CD in 2000 but only as a CDR and with accusations that it was a bootleg.

I bought my copy of this many years ago purely on reputation and on first hearing the opening track 'Rubber Band' I thought I'd wasted my money. As the album played on I soon realised I hadn't. The rest of the album is fantastic.

For those who like their Folk 'dark' then there are plenty of bleak but beautiful songs here, none more so than 'Red Wine Promises' which amazingly was later released as a single! (It's the B-side but still...)

Hopefully some day soon this brilliant album will be reissued properly. There have been rumours....

Gimmer Nicholson - Christopher Idylls (2016)
Review
Just when you think there are surely no lost gems of the 60s left to be discovered something like this album comes along.

Recorded in 1969 at the legendary Ardent studio of Memphis it remained unreleased until a 1981 issue on Peabody (Good luck finding one of those) and a 1994 CD reissue on Lucky Seven. Despite these two issues it remained scarce and was certainly unknown to me.

Step forward Light In The Attic to make this wonderful album more freely available.

Six instrumentals which are so melodic and floaty that they could have been recorded yesterday. If you can imagine a cross between the more placid work of John Fahey and the melancholy moments of fellow Memphis alchemists Big Star then that will give you a good idea of what to expect.

Of course this album was recorded 3 years before Big Star's debut but you have to feel that they must have heard the tapes. As one of my friends commented when I first played this album to him - 'You keep expecting it to break into Watch The Sunrise at any moment'

All in all a really beautiful album with artwork, sleevenotes and a fine pressing to match its high standards.

Elyse Weinberg - Greasepaint Smile (2015)
Review
Being a huge fan of Ms. Weinberg's sole LP from 1969 I was excited to hear that Chicago's Numero Group were going to release this unissued album. I had wrongly presumed it would consist of demo recordings but instead it's a proper complete but unissued album (her label Tetragrammaton went bankrupt leaving 'Greasepaint Smile' in limbo - full story in the sleevenotes)

Well I'm pleased to say that on first listen this sounds every bit as great as her first album. It has a wonderfully ragged feel about it but her voice and the songs are beautiful as ever.

Re-issue (of sorts) of the year for me.

BC Camplight - How To Die In The North (2015)
Review
One of my albums of the year which seems to have vanished from the media glare. The artist being banned from entering the UK can't have helped promotion and maybe it's just me but isn't B.C. Camplight an awful name?

Thankfully it's not an awful record. It's great oddball pop. He certainly has a musical magpie approach but more than enough talent to fit all the sum of parts into something special.

The instantly catchy opener 'You Should've Gone To School' sounds like The Rolling Stones 'Gimme Shelter' under the influence of Ketamine, with Jan and Dean crashing the party.

Top stuff!

P.F. Commando - Manipulerade Mongon (2014)
Courtesy of the Ugly Pop website....

Self-released in 1979 by one of Sweden's most notorious bands, this monster debut was the country's first punk LP, packing in 15 tracks of pure three-chord bash at its most primal and aggressive. Vocals are alternately barked and snarled, guitars slash and buzz, the rhythm section thrashes along maniacally-- no pop, no art, just PUNK in the vein of Dead Boys, Viletones, Germs and early Black Flag!

Ugly Pop is very pleased to be making this hard-to-find slab available again in its first legitimate vinyl pressing since 1979, with all new insert.

Catapilla - Changes (2000)
I've heard that some of their releases are legal and some are not but it's not really practical for us to try and sort which is which so the label should either be 100% bootleg flag or 100% Italian flag.

I'm inclined to favour the 2nd option unless we have conclusive proof, perhaps mentioning in the label intro that the label is 'controversial' = See also Radioactive, Past & Present, Particles, Phoenix etc. etc.

Eek!

Cuckoo - Iona (1978)
Following a mail to the contact address I've edited this so that the artist is now CUCKOO and the album is entitled IONA - An easy mistake to make given the layout on the label.

Here's a small bit of info…

JAMES LASCELLES ......... Percussion Dulcimer Melodica Piano

James' first lessons were with classical composer John Taverner'. Founder member of the Global Village Trucking Company he went on to work as a multi instrumentalist with a great number of artists including Frank Zappa Joan Armatrading Lee Scratch Perry The Wailers and Steve Harleys' Cockney Rebel. He formed the legendary jazz rock festival band Cuckoo with Storey in the late 70's and they have performed together ever since.
