LaurenceD SUBS 27th Sep 2020 | | Vinyl AlbumVarious Artists - Country Greats | The tracks on disc 1 (except for The Jordanaires) are a mixture of A and B sides from Columbia singles released between August and November 1965 inclusive.
Each track on disc 2 is followed by a locking groove.

LaurenceD SUBS 18th Sep 2020 | | Vinyl AlbumThe Ferrers (Rosemary Clooney and José Ferrer) - Selections From The Broadway Musical Comedy "Oh Captain!" (1958) | Released in mono format only.
This is not the original cast LP - that one was released on Columbia Masterworks (OL 5280 / AOS 2002)
|
LaurenceD SUBS 18th Sep 2020 | | Vinyl AlbumFour Tops - Anthology (1974) | Added alternate labels from Superior Record Pressing Corp. (thanks to W.B.lbl for that info)
"SRPCW" is visible on the top side label of each disc (sides 1, 3 & 5).
|
LaurenceD SUBS 18th Sep 2020 | | Vinyl AlbumDarlene Paul - Miss Darlene Paul | No additional runout info...
Not certain about those two phone numbers, but they are probably from the Los Angeles area:
278-5922 :
- CRestview = Beverly Hills CA
- CRestwood = Beverly Hills CA
- BRoadway = Los Angeles CA
876-6019
- TRemont = Los Angeles CA
- TRiangle = Los Angeles CA
- TRinity = Downtown Los Angeles CA

|
LaurenceD SUBS 13th Sep 2020 | | Vinyl AlbumGrateful Dead - Shakedown Street (1985) | Added images, including improved front cover, with regards to Diognes_The_Fox & TheJudge
|
LaurenceD SUBS 12th Sep 2020 | | Vinyl AlbumVarious Artists - Capitol Single Record Release 616 (1958) | Thanks IamBgas, your supposition sounds quite plausible.
|
LaurenceD SUBS 7th Sep 2020 | | Vinyl AlbumVarious Artists - The Original Cast Album "Grease" (1972) | Added variant front cover and labels. The cover has an additional Lion Records logo - no idea why, since the labels and cat # are for the same MGM release.
|
LaurenceD SUBS 26th Aug 2020 | | Vinyl AlbumDave Mason - Dave Mason Is Alive! (1973) | Live tracks from the same Troubadour recordings as released on side 2 of Headkeeper. And like that album, released without Dave's consent.
|
LaurenceD SUBS 20th Aug 2020 | | Vinyl AlbumMark Slade - Mark Slade's New Hat (1969) | Issued in a gatefold sleeve, and included a life-size 2' X 6' poster. I don't want to be too hard on Mark, but to describe him as a singer would be quite charitable...
My favorite tracks are A6 (has whistling instead of singing) and B6 (instrumental).
And then there is track B2: "Are They Gonna Shoot God?" [YouTube Video]
|
LaurenceD SUBS 2nd Aug 2020 | | Vinyl AlbumMerv Griffin - Merv Griffin's Dance Party (1961) | From Billboard May 8, 1961 article p.7 "Carlton To Release Three Album Lines With Special Deals":
The label is releasing this week a "Charanga" LP with Merv Griffin ... Griffin will plug the album on his New York TV show and offer the "Charanga" set to his fans for only $2 by mail.
Merv's "Charanga" single (Carlton 545) spent 4 weeks on the Billboard charts, peaking at #69. It looks like that was not enough to rescue this LP from obscurity...

LaurenceD SUBS 30th Jul 2020 | | Vinyl AlbumThe 4 Seasons - Born To Wander (1964) | Yes W.B., those labels are from the same disc.
|
LaurenceD SUBS 24th Jul 2020 | | Vinyl AlbumVarious Artists - Five-String Banjo Greats (1964) | McGuinn's Banjo Cantata is a (brief) arrangement of Bach's "Jesu, Joy Of Man's Desiring".
Hm, seems to me that he inserted that melody into a certain Byrds song...
|
LaurenceD SUBS 22nd Jul 2020 | | Vinyl AlbumDick Powell - The Wonderful Teens (1961) | Each track begins with narration by Dick Powell
- on B5 Dick Powell narrates and sings
Bob Grabeau credited as Bob Grabow on label
Side 2 track order on the label is correct, as opposed to the sleeve
|
LaurenceD SUBS 10th Jul 2020 | | Vinyl AlbumThe Bachelors - Presenting: The Bachelors (1964) | Added a scan of that regular front cover that Trainman mentioned.
|
LaurenceD SUBS 10th Jul 2020 | | Vinyl AlbumThe Romancers [L.A., 60s] - Let's Do The Swim (1964) | Second album by The Romancers; also the first (and apparently only) release on the Selma label (a subsidiary of Del-Fi, whose address was 6277 Selma Ave. Hollywood).
Release date estimated based on delta numbers. When I first looked at the runout info, I wondered if the labels had been put on the wrong sides. But they are correct.
One title track discrepancy on B5: label has "Peanut Butter And Jam", cover has "Dog Paddle". No telling which is correct, since these are all instrumentals, as was the case with the "Slauson" LP. The reason why both LPs contain only instrumentals is kind of a long story, but it boils down to a legal dispute between the Del-Fi and Magic Circle labels over the rights to Max Uballez (he had released a record as Maximilian on Magic Circle, and then another one as Max Uballes on Donna). IIRC the end result of the dispute was that Max was prohibited from singing on any releases for five years.

LaurenceD SUBS 7th Jul 2020 | | Vinyl AlbumThe Don Ellis Orchestra - 'Live' At Monterey (1967) | The 1966 Monterey Jazz Festival took place on Sept 16-18 (Fri-Sun). Don Ellis performed on Sunday afternoon.
This LP was my introduction to Don Ellis and is still one of my favorites.

LaurenceD SUBS 20th Jun 2020 | | Vinyl AlbumLou Monte - Pepino, The Italian Mouse And Other Italian Fun Songs (1962) | Twist Italiano
[YouTube Video]
|
LaurenceD SUBS 20th Jun 2020 | | Vinyl AlbumErroll Garner - Penthouse Serenade (1955) | Also released with the same catalog number but titled "Erroll Garner Plays Vol. 1". I think that is probably a later pressing.
|
LaurenceD SUBS 6th Jun 2020 | | Vinyl AlbumRay Charles - Genius Hits The Road (1964) | I am estimating that this Capitol pressing is from late 1964; if someone has more precise information that would be great.
|
LaurenceD SUBS 6th Jun 2020 | | Vinyl AlbumLittle Richard - Here's Little Richard (1957) | Added scans for back cover variant (8508 Sunset Blvd) and labels (Stereo-Natural Sound). Despite what the labels say, these are the same mono masters; runout info:
- side 1: SP-LP-2100-SIDE 1
- side 2: SP-LP-2100-SIDE 2
|
LaurenceD SUBS 2nd Jun 2020 | | Vinyl AlbumThe Seeds - The Seeds (1966) | Some composer credits on the side 2 label differ from those on the cover:
- B2 (Marcus Tybalt)
- B4 (Marcus Tybalt)
- B5 (Saxon)
|
LaurenceD SUBS 2nd Jun 2020 | | Vinyl AlbumLive [70's] - Live (1974) | One of a pair of self-released LPs by this group, both recorded at the same venue. The location of the Beef and Barrel is not mentioned, but it may be the one in Schaumburg IL, which was operating in 1974, and had live music.
These same four performers also participated in the making of an LP by Byron Keith Daugherty titled "Back Door Man" on Stanza, ca. early 1975
|
LaurenceD SUBS 27th May 2020 | | Vinyl AlbumThe King's Men - Barber Shop Ballads (1950) | The 1950 release date is an estimate. The original 78-rpm version of this album (MGM 18) was released in 1948.
|
LaurenceD SUBS 25th May 2020 | | Vinyl AlbumRichard And Willie - Red White And Blue From A Black Point Of View (1976) | I remember seeing this 'duo' back in the day; it might have been on the Flip Wilson show. Compared with this recording, they had to clean up their routine considerably for network TV.
|
LaurenceD SUBS 25th May 2020 | | Vinyl AlbumОрэра - Орэра (1967) | A few remarks:
A4 = Strangers In The Night; sung in English (phonetically)
A5 features yodeling
It looks like some composer credits were transliterated to Russian Cyrillic and then back to Latin script again, resulting in things such as: Kaempfert -> Кемпферт -> Campferth
|
LaurenceD SUBS 19th May 2020 | | Vinyl AlbumVarious Artists - Chile Vencera! | I don't have a precise release date, but the matrix numbers (29329,29330) seem to point to 1976-77
|
LaurenceD SUBS 17th May 2020 | | Vinyl AlbumGloria Jones - Come Go With Me (1966) | I've seen mono copies of this LP here and there, but it seems that the stereo version is much harder to obtain.
|
LaurenceD SUBS 17th May 2020 | | Vinyl AlbumThe Cramps - Songs The Lord Taught Us (1980) | Added scans from 2nd pressing with 1980 copyright and correct track listings on cover.
