ppint. 23rd Sep 2024		Vinyl Album Traffic - Traffic (1968)	the additional cat# letter prepended to the original trailing "T" appears to've been born from a misreading of the cat# on the original lp's b-side, where there is no space set between the cat#, "ILPS 9081T", and the b-side indicator, "B". yr hmbl srppnt. s'spects it'll never surface whether the misreading occurred in island's offices, or was by the person setting up the type for the new-style labels, nor whether it was considered, even briefly, by whomsoever was responsible that there was clearly a different cat# for the a-side, ILPS 9081TA: which might so easily've given us ILPS 9081 TA A paired with ILPS 9081 TB B. . .

ppint. 12th Aug 2024		Vinyl Album Jean Ritchie - Songs From Kentucky (1955)	argo record label in the uk: 1951-1957 independent, bought by decca 1957, ownership thereafter as per decca, being bought by polygram (or whatever the corporate name was in 1980), lacuna 1988-9, active again 1990, lacuna 1998-2020, active again 2020 (to date; still in use now, sfaiaa). argo record label in merkia: chess records label 1955-1965; renamed cadet 1955. no connexion with the above. i think both catalogues are now owned by universal, but i'm less certain about the chess records catalog(ue), which went through some interesting changes involving grt & other corporations. . .° westminster records, merkin independent 1949, bought by abc/paramount c. 1960, released classical recordings in stereo - some(many?) of which were licensed from them by the paul hamlyn/emi music for pleasure budget price uk record label, pretty much from its launching in 1965, iirc. yr hmbl srppnt. knows next to naught more about westminster records.° were they a relatively cheap (mid-range or budget) label ? ° - philmh will doubtless have full details stored in his internal and/or external memory bank(s). . .

ppint. 5th May 2024		Vinyl Album Vanilla Fudge - Star Collection (1972)	this was distributed to perfectly ordinary record/music shops in the uk, which is where yr hmbl srppnt. bought their copy; they also carried other "midi" label albums. i do not know whether all of the midi label releases were distributed by wea (kinney, etc.) in the yuk-of-gb-&-ni (& the republic of ireland?), though.

(re-used on john jakes' "asylum world" (paperback library 1969), q.v.)
ppint. 21st Feb 2024		Vinyl Album Gerard Hoffnung - Timeless Hoffnung (1970)	no idea of - and definitely no claim regarding - priority: my copy has plain light yellow labels bearing red logo (BBC records on four italicised cartouches, above a spirograph-style design), all the rest of the typography is printed in black; matrix numbers: RE+87+1 & RE + 87 + 2 (not, as given on the labels, re 87 / 1 & re 87 / 2) and diametrically opposite both the matrix numbers, in the plastic on the far side of the labels from them: BBC
ppint. 17th Nov 2023		Vinyl Album Various Artists - This Is Sue (1969)	philmh ''the duke and the peacock'' was a full-price lp, and one which i don't believe sold especially well - iirc, none of the island group's sold especially well until island entered its purple period - paradoxically, on the pink (pop) label - though whether this was because of relatively poor distribution, or primarily due to poorer promotion - chris blackwell's personal priority seems to've always been pushing singles sales - or in more-or-less equal parts to both, this deponent knoweth not. - ''this is sue'' ''this is blues'', and spectacularly ''you can all join in'' suddenly announced to younger record buyers, apparently countrywide, that there was an awful lot of good music on this label (sue sales didn't really pick up much, i don't believe - though all (or almost all) the sue singles back catalogue was still actually available if you ordered it, sfaiaa) - being *fourteen tracks* for about the price of two singles!

ppint. 21st May 2023		Vinyl Album Duane Eddy - Movin' 'N' Groovin' (1970)	hi philmh - thanks for the information. - yes, i should've thought of that, and searched on zg1, not zgw* for any others in the series: i didn't think of doing this, even though i'm familiar with the decca london (''american'' !) third cat# letter market indicator from the hl series singles and the ha/sha series lps. - is there intelligent thought in a cat-sitting ppint. ? (& it could've been any of the other first eight (?or ten?) lps in the series i saw and auto-ignored...)
ppint. 19th May 2023		Vinyl Album Duane Eddy - Movin' 'N' Groovin' (1970)	jamie released their original lps in both mono and stereo: were their stereo versions also simply rechanelled mono - or even actually mono, with labels stating stereo slapped into the presses - ? - or did decca just not bother to use stereo tapes for this 1970 mid-price or budget revival release ?
ppint. 15th May 2023		Vinyl Album Duane Eddy - Movin' 'N' Groovin' (1970)	n.b. rechannelled mono recordings - fake stereo - best listened to mixed back down to mono. there's very little information given on the back of the uk sleeve - i don't know about the other countries' releases of the album. i'm not sure there was more than one other release in the ZGW100 series of lps - and literally all i can now remember about that is i decided not to buy it without even picking it up: i wonder what it was...

The Village Wait (1970)	a stunningly good debut album - not unexpectedly, given the artists ashley hutchings managed to assemble to form the group - but even so. . . over-all, though not all tracks hit 10, the album must qualify as 15/10 - - even though this is mathematically impossible.
ppint. 29th Mar 2023		Vinyl Album Moby Grape - Wow (1968)	concerning your recollections, yr hmbl srppnt. is unable to squeak authoritatively, modom; but certainly, the cbs label & group in the yuk-of-gb-&-ni and the pye records label & group had not moved to stereo records only by 1968.° ° - this could, yr hmbl srppnt. s'poses, be adduced as evidence that pye records was not in fact one of the majors - but, cbs ?
ppint. 25th Mar 2023		Vinyl Album Moby Grape - Wow (1968)	this is, or should be a stereo copy, see the merkin columbia label stereo lp cat# quoted parenthetically on the cbs label. see also the boxed advice across the bottom rear of the cbs record's card sleeve. cbs moved from prefixes bpg & sbpg to no prefix & s, to no prefix (almost all releases ''stereo playable mono'') with ''mono'' stated for relatively rare reissues of mono-only historic recordings; they later reintroduced an s prefix, somewhat erratically - i'm not sure why - with m as a prefix on historic mono-only recordings, also somewhat erratically. . . then iiuc, all cbs european pressing moved to holland. philmh almost certainly has the date engraved on his heart, brain, hard disk, or possibly microchip(s). . .
ppint. 25th Mar 2023		Vinyl Album Gordon Lightfoot - Early Lightfoot (1969)	not connected with the 1971 canadian ame records album of the same title, which collected ten tracks recorded by lightfoot in nashville usa 1962-3 for the canadian chateau label and released on uk singles variously by decca and fontana, equally variously as by gord lightfoot and gordie lightfoot - if at all.
