sladesounds 21st Jun 2014 | | Vinyl AlbumValerie Carter - Just A Stone's Throw Away (1977) | All Music Review by Rob Caldwell
Her first full-length solo album continued her musical involvement with Lowell George and the members of Little Feat, which had begun three years earlier when she was a member of the band Howdy Moon. It also featured a stellar cast of other musicians, including Jackson Browne, Linda Ronstadt, and John Hall.
The album is at once funky and folksy, blending a variety of styles, from the haunting acoustic sounds of "Face of Appalachia" to the jazzy blues of "Back to Blue Some More." "Ooh Child" was featured very effectively at the end of the 1979 teen rebellion movie Over The Edge.

sladesounds 5th Jun 2014 | | Vinyl AlbumThe Byrds - The Original Singles 1967-1969 Volume 2 (1982) | J. McGuinn & R. McGuinn are the same person, now known as James Roger McGuinn (born James Joseph McGuinn III on July 13, 1942).
At the start of his career he was known as Jim. The story goes that he changed his name in 1967 because a guru in Indonesia said that a new name would vibrate better with the universe. The guru sent Jim the letter "R" and asked him to send back ten names starting with that letter.
Because Jim was into gadgets and Sci-Fi, he sent names like "Rocket" and "Ramjet." He included the name Roger only because they use it for radio messages to indicate "OKAY."
Roger was the only "real" name in the bunch and the guru picked it. Jim only changed his middle name from Joseph to Roger but used Roger as a stage name.
As far as the vibrating with the universe ... he didn't notice any change and would have changed his name back to Jim (which he liked) but that would have been too confusing.

sladesounds 2nd Jun 2014 | | Vinyl AlbumThe Byrds - Ballad Of Easy Rider (1969) | This was the eighth album released by the band. The album was named after the song "Ballad of Easy Rider", which had been written by Roger McGuinn (with help from Bob Dylan), as the theme song for the 1969 film, Easy Rider.
The album title was also chosen in an attempt to capitalize on the commercial success of the film, although the majority of the music on the album had no connection with it. This worked and it heightened The Byrds' public profile resulting Ballad of Easy Rider becoming the band's highest charting album for two years in the U.S.A.

sladesounds 27th May 2014 | | Vinyl AlbumMinnie Riperton - Love Lives Forever (1980) | No expert on this but I think that the Buddy Holly album was "overdubbed" i.e. extra music etc was put on top of the existing recordings which in that case were all sorts including studio outtakes, home recordings etc., most of them being (at the time) mono recordings. End result the "full" original recording plus extra bits to "enhance" the music.
With Minnie's album everything but the vocals were removed from the original recordings. I guess this was possible due to the fact that when she recorded them in 1978 there must have been multi track recorders in the studio with capability to lay down 24 tracks or more. After all but the vocal tracks were removed, new music and extra vocals were recorded and added in with the tempo of the songs also being changed. End result here original vocals only with everything else you hear being newly recorded.

sladesounds 27th May 2014 | | Vinyl AlbumMinnie Riperton - Love Lives Forever (1980) | Love Lives Forever is the sixth and final studio album by American soul singer Minnie Riperton.
Released posthumously, it was co-produced by her husband Richard Rudolph and released on her then-label Capitol Records. It consists of unused vocal sessions, put in music and vocally completed by artists she admired or with whom she shared her musical style. Even though most of the selections are set in a midtempo rhythm, they are calm in mood.
This album was the first of its kind, in that all of Minnie's vocals were stripped from their earlier, original music tracks and completely redone. Completed with new musicians, vocalists and arrangements. Producer Quincy Jones described this difficult project best as "keeping the bridge, but moving the water."

sladesounds 11th May 2014 | | Vinyl AlbumThorinshield - Thorinshield (1967) | An obscure Los Angeles trio that had its roots in folk movement but at times drifted into a little psych rock.
Tracks such as Wrong My Friend, Here Today and Life Is A Dream offer a highly commercial mix of folk-rock and soft psych. The combination of great harmonies (check out Pleasure Time), coupled with occasional psychedelic touches (nice backwards guitar on One Girl) and attractive orchestration (Prelude To A Postlude) come across as quite impressive.
Bobby Ray may be the same guy who played bass on Donovan's May 1966 sessions in L.A., including Season Of The Witch, The Trip and two unreleased pieces: Super Lungs (different version) and Breezes of Patchulie.
Drummer Terry Hand had previous played in a number of surf bands and released a couple of singles as a member of Everpresent Fullness.
