vinylsol 14th Dec 2014 | | Vinyl AlbumThe Chicks - C'mon Chicks (1968) | From 1968, this was the Chicks' third album and their first for Polydor. They'd left Viking and management was taken over by Ray Columbus who produced the album and wrote the sleeve notes.
vinylsol 13th Dec 2014 | | Vinyl AlbumThe Chicks - The Chicks Second Album (1966) | The second of two albums the Chicks made for Ron Dalton'sViking, before moving to Polydor for their last two albums. The album is called 'The Chicks Second Album' on the label but on the sleeve this is reduced to 'The Chicks 2nd Album'. The song 'Hang On Sloopy' is credited to Russe/Farrell - this is incorrect, as it was written by Wes Farrell and Bobby RUSSELL not Russe. The credit for 'Love Is Strange' reads 'South Baker'.
vinylsol 10th Nov 2014 | | Vinyl AlbumThe Chicks - The Sound Of...The Chicks (1965) | Debut album from sisters Sue and Judy Donaldson, 1965 - the LP contains no recording information at all.
vinylsol 10th Nov 2014 | | Vinyl AlbumDavid Bowie - Hunky Dory (1990) | This 1990 reissue came in a gatefold sleeve with an obi strip, and a one-sided 12inch extra disc containing "Bombers" (recorded 1971 and previously unreleased), "The Supermen', an alternate version of the track from 'The Man Who Sold The World', a demo version of "Quicksand" and an alternate mix of "The Bewlay Brothers". Both records were pressed on clear vinyl.
vinylsol 9th Nov 2014 | | Vinyl AlbumNash Chase - A Portrait Of Nash Chase (1974) | This 1974 compilation is essentially a reissue of Nash's 1972 album, 'Handle With Care', with the addition of two tracks, 'Maria Isabella' and 'Spanish Eyes'.
vinylsol 9th Nov 2014 | | Vinyl AlbumNash Chase - Handle With Care (1972) | The copy listed has the catalogue number WRC E.3145 HSD.1024 which indicates that it was sold as a mail order item through the World Record Club. Copies sold in-store would have been stamped just HSD.1024. The catalogue number on the sleeve is slightly different to the label, B-HSD 1024. I think the 'B' is related to the original retail price.
vinylsol 4th Nov 2014 | | Vinyl AlbumSounds Nice - Love At First Sight (1969) | I just LOVE this album. It has such a rich atmosphere, all the way through. Tim Mycroft's 'Love You Too' is outstanding.
vinylsol 4th Nov 2014 | | Vinyl AlbumNash Chase - Nash Chase (1970) | Nash made one album for Ode before switching to HMV. The Hi-Revving Tongues provided backing on this album although they are mis-credited as the High Revving Tongues. 'What Greater Love' was a minor hit single.
vinylsol 3rd Nov 2014 | | Vinyl AlbumThe Chapta - Open Door (1972) | The second of Chapta's two albums. The band then evolved into Link.
vinylsol 3rd Nov 2014 | | Vinyl AlbumThe Chapta - One (1971) | Jim Peterik's writing credit for 'Vehicle' is misspelled as 'Petrik'. A mixture of originals and covers, the first Chapta LP has one standout track, the psychedelic classic 'Journey To The Sun'.
vinylsol 3rd Nov 2014 | | Vinyl AlbumJohn Rowles - Cheryl Moana Marie (1970) | John originally comes from the timber town of Kawerau in New Zealand's central North Island. He had a huge voice and 'Cheryl Moana Marie', from this album, was a big hit in New Zealand.
vinylsol 3rd Nov 2014 | | Vinyl AlbumVanilla Fudge - Renaissance (1968) | The third Vanilla Fudge LP, 'Renaissance' is, in my opinion, the best. Five of the seven tracks are originals and their cover of 'Season Of The Witch' has to be heard to be believed. This is an original 1968 New Zealand stereo pressing which came in a flipback laminated sleeve with green labels and ads for the first two albums on the back, along with the words to Carl De Angelis' 'Vanilla Fudge Symphony'.
vinylsol 1st Nov 2014 | | Vinyl AlbumSailor - Trouble (1975) | Georg Kajanus is one of the 1970's most under-rated pop song-writers. He had a fantastic gift for melody.
vinylsol 1st Nov 2014 | | Vinyl AlbumVelvett Fogg - Velvett Fogg...Plus (1989) | Dr Doom, yeah, I've had the original since 1969 but never seen another NZ copy. I guess it would fetch arund $150-$200 at auction (not that I'm selling of course!).
vinylsol 29th Oct 2014 | | Vinyl AlbumVelvett Fogg - Velvett Fogg...Plus (1989) | Righto, thanks for the heads-up. I'd listed it as France because that's the country of manufacture on the label but on searching the 45worlds forum I now see that the country of release (in this case, the UK), is intended to be used as the listed release country, rather than where the record was actually made. I've put a correction request in the queue.
vinylsol 27th Oct 2014 | | Vinyl AlbumVelvett Fogg - Velvett Fogg (1969) | This is an original New Zealand pressing; in England the album came on the traditional blue Pye label. John Peel's sleevenotes are credited to 'Johnn Peell' and Fran Minkoff's writing credit for 'Come Away Melinda' is incorrectly spelled as 'Mindoff'.
vinylsol 27th Oct 2014 | | Vinyl AlbumVelvett Fogg - Velvett Fogg...Plus (1989) | This is a 1989 reissue of a 1969 psychedelic classic from the Birmingham quartet. The 'plus' in the title refers to the addition of the track 'Telstar 69', a 1969 single which had not been on the original album. In addition, the writing credit for 'Come Away Melinda' has been corrected. This was original 'Hellerman/Mindoff' and has been corrected to 'Hellerman/Minkoff' (Fran Minkoff wrote the lyrics to Fred Hellerman's music). John Peel's sleevenotes are retained (although the spelling of his name is normalised from 1969's credit of 'Johnn Peell') and there are additional sleevenotes by Dinnes Cruickshank.
The record was pressed in France, presumably for sale in the UK. The sleeve says 'Made In England'.
vinylsol 27th Oct 2014 | | Vinyl AlbumGraham Brazier - Inside Out (1981) | First solo album by Brazier, formerly of Hello Sailor and the Legionnaires.
vinylsol 27th Oct 2014 | | Vinyl AlbumGraham Brazier - Brazier (1987) | This is the second solo album by the former Hello Sailor singer and sax player.
vinylsol 27th Oct 2014 | | Vinyl AlbumThe Breakaways - Album Two (1967) | Curiously, although Sal Criscillo's photography is credited, there are no recording, producing or engineering credits, unusual for HMV at the time. This was the second (and last) album for the former New Plymouth pop & r&b quartet who recorded their first as Bari And The Breakaways. Features Bari Gordon, Dave Orams, Brian Beauchamp and Midge Marsden.
vinylsol 16th Oct 2014 | | Vinyl AlbumThe Bluestars - The Bluestars (1999) | Raw, wild and powerful sixties punk.
vinylsol 13th Oct 2014 | | Vinyl AlbumThe Avengers [New Zealand] - Alive! Avengers In Action (1969) | The third and final Avengers album was recorded live at Ali Baba's nightclub, Cuba Street, Wellington, on 19th November 1968. As well as the usual nightclub crowd, the club was packed with American sailors from the aircraft carrier 'USS America' which was visiting Wellington at the time.
vinylsol 13th Oct 2014 | | Vinyl AlbumThe Avengers [New Zealand] - Medallion (1968) | The second Avengers album contained only one band original (Clive Cockburn's 'Sally') but included their hit singles 'Love Hate Revenge', 'Days Of Pearly Spencer' and 'Out Of Sight Out Of Mind'
vinylsol 13th Oct 2014 | | Vinyl AlbumThe Avengers [New Zealand] - Electric Recording (1967) | First of three albums by Wellington's Avengers. Chris Malcolm wrote most of the original material on this album although he was not actually a member of the band. The record was recorded at HMV's studios in Wellington.
vinylsol 8th Oct 2014 | | Vinyl AlbumFourmyula - Creation (1969) | 'Creation' was the third Fourmyula album, again recorded at HMV Wellington, with the addition of one track recorded during the band's sessions at Abbey Road in London. It contained the huge hit 'Nature' - forty years later this song was voted New Zealand's greatest ever pop song.
vinylsol 8th Oct 2014 | | Vinyl AlbumFourmyula - Green "B" Holiday (1968) | The second Fourmyula album was a concept record entirely written by Wayne Mason and Ali Richardson. The songs were loosely based around the idea of the band travelling around the country in their van, the 'Green "B''.
vinylsol 8th Oct 2014 | | Vinyl AlbumNancy Sinatra And Lee Hazlewood - Nancy & Lee (1968) | Wonderful record - 'Some Velvet Morning' is the best example of psychedelic country music ever written.
vinylsol 8th Oct 2014 | | Vinyl AlbumThe Fourmyula - The Fourmyula (1968) | The first Fourmyula album featured the hit single 'Alice Is There' and a selection of covers alongside the first Mason/Richardson originals. Drummer Chris Parry later went on to sign and record the first Jam albums. He later started Fiction Records and signed the Cure.
vinylsol 6th Oct 2014 | | Vinyl AlbumThe Fourmyula - Turn Your Back On The Wind (2010) | Original UK production by Chris Andrews and the Fourmyula. The Fourmyula were signed to Decca at the time and the band eventually broke up following Decca's decision not to release this album at the time. A slightly different version appears on the 4 CD box set 'The Complete Fourmyula', also issued in 2010.
