Notes

Mary Jane “Chris Connor” Loutsenhizer was a jazz singer who played the clarinet during her childhood and adolescent years. Ms. Connor had publically performed for the first time at the 1945 Jefferson City Junior College graduation, where she sang Amor. The audience was so impressed by Ms. Connor’s voice that she decided to pursue a singing career.

Although Ms. Connor’s first had played and sung with the University of Missouri college band during the weekends, her primary means of income was stenography, which she performed during the weekdays. When Ms. Connor had relocated to New York City, she was unable to find a singing occupation, so she became an office stenographer. For the next few weeks, Ms. Connor had struggled until she successfully auditioned for and joined the Snowflakes, which was led by Claude Thornhill.

A few years later, Ms. Connor had secured a contract with Atlantic records, which was at that time, a rhythm and blues label. Even though Ms. Connor was the only Caucasian female jazz singer, she was given the right to choose her own tunes and to work with any musician that she desired.

Although the title of this disc is a Date With Chris Connor, Ms. Connor actually collaborated with various artists, such as Oscar Pettiford, Osie Johnson and Eddie Costa, who were regular jazz musicians with Atlantic records. Even though the reverse jacket side indicates tune A3 Squeeze Me, the a-side disc indicates tune A3 Just Squeeze Me. Accordingly, the correct title is Squeeze Me.
