The orange label issue dates from 1975. I picked up a pristine copy just the other week.

Added a textured sleeve front. It is an olive green in colour.
The record has the pink rim labels of the first design corresponding to images 1496577 and 1496578.
Matrix numbers are hand scratched and end 3U.
The second pink rim design labels above are taken from an LP with matrix numbers A-5U and B-4U.

Added label scans without Island Records credit under Cat. No.

Just found this discussion after nosing around Cat's other albums after updating the Aussie issue of TEA FOR THE TILLERMAN. That album, and this one, were originally issued on the pink label in Australia and New Zealand. Apparently Chris Blackwell was quite displeased with his antipodean licensee Festival when he discovered this (probably during Cat's tour of 1971 or 1972) and ordered the switch to the pink rim label pronto!

Maybe they just found an old box of spare pink labels that they decided to use up?

Island tended to use white labels for test pressings and occasionally custom printed white labels for promotion. Can't see why pink labels would be used so long after the switch-over.

I wonder if a possible scenario where pink labels could have been added to this would be if a small number were made up and sent out as promo copies... when pink labels were current, but when the time of the wider commercial release rolled round, those labels had been replaced.

Sorry - complete brain melt. All the info I've just added concerns Tea for the Tillerman.
This LP is far too late to be on pink Island. Duuuurrrr.

I've never seen UK pink labels for this or Road either. Yuri Grishin's Island book doesn't even list them.

Still, the only pink labels I can find on the web for this album, have a different layout from the ELP album, also I can find only German pink labels for the Road To Ruin lp....

According to Stuart Penney and Chris Savage's epic Island discography feature in Record Collector this LP was available on the pink label but very briefly; weeks or even days before the switch to the pink rim label. Original E. J. Day sleeves were made of textured un-laminated cardboard; later Robor sleeves were fully laminated. The border around the front sleeve was originally royal blue then changed to purple.
Incidentally, this shared the same release date as ILPS-9132, ILPS 9133 and ILPS 9134. All available on the pink label except for the Nick Drake which, as far as I know, has never been spotted on pink.

I'm a bit confused about the very first UK issue of this LP: there are a few "pink labels" on popsike with a lower A3U/B3U than the usual A4U/b4U, but also a date release on label (never seen before on uk Island labels) and maybe a laminated cover... any idea? Other later UK Island pink labels like these?

Added scans of my 1980's gatefold reissue. I think the labels date to 1983.
