Apollo59 13th Aug 2017 | | CD AlbumThe Who - Tommy | Remixed by Andy Macpherson & Jon Astley, whom did their level best to lose a lot of the bottom end depth from what were very good recordings in the first place.
|
Apollo59 13th Aug 2017 | | CD AlbumThe Who - Magic Bus | I'd meant to add this to Notes:
Best avoided as Tracks 1, 3, 6, 8-11 are these electronically enhanced fake stereo.
Track 2 is the short version in stereo
Tracks 4 & 5 are stereo versions as found on Sell Out
Track 7 is a stereo version of the single version - or to be exact the shorter 3'16 edit of the single version. This CD is the only disc where this version can be found.

Apollo59 13th Aug 2017 | | CD AlbumThe Waterboys - Fisherman's Blues | Wouldn't it be smart if there was a reference page to explain in clear layman's terms what all these codes - PM this, POL that and publishing stuff all means - all this BIEM, MCPS, STEMRA etc. I mean it's sort of treated like a best kept secret from the masses, which is ludicrous. Or am I just stating the obvious...?
|
Apollo59 13th Aug 2017 | | CD AlbumThe Who - Shakin' All Over | @Lee Wrecker: Yes, it's a fine recording although for some unknown reason it omits 'I'm A Boy'. I would also point to 'Pure Rock Theatre' from `69, as also one of the best boots - at least it was until the 4th version of Tommy was released in 2013.
No, I made the decision a few years ago in 2009, to sell my bootleg vinyl (and a lot of regular vinyl that I didn't want or enjoy) as I had too much of the same thing with loads of Pink Floyd, Who, Beatles and whoever else. I copied them to CD-R. - no computer (gawd forbid!), no compression, but direct audio injection via an amplifier to a dedicated CD recorder. They were just collecting dust on the shelves as I seldom ever played them anyway. No regrets as I got very good money for them from the Japs.
I suppose in many ways The Who are one of my top 5 bands and I'll admit to being a bit of an anorak swot about their recordings in that I know that I know everything there is to know about their recordings. By that I mean the music as opposed to technical codes on CD discs that have nothing to do with the music content. Over the years I've built up a comprehensive data base that details the differences within the tracks on a multitude of releases which is fairly useful in particular to that of the 60's recordings where loads of surprising variants exist. Back in the days of fanzines, I used to contribute articles to both 'Generations' and 'Naked Eye'. I saw them not that many weeks ago here in Glasgow - I was dead centre in row 5. I had my Live at Leeds LP signed by Townshend when I first met him when he was on holiday with his family in St. Ives, Cornwall, summer `79 - but that's the beginning of a whole other story...

|
Apollo59 13th Aug 2017 | | CD AlbumThe Who - A Quick One | This CD was supposed to be the Mono cut, but for technical reasons didn't achieve this.
Trk 1: Stereo - the 2'42 short stereo version. The longer 2'52 version with alternate guitar at the fade-out is on the Stereo A Quick One CD. There is a true Mono version at 2'30 and was last released in 1974 on the double LP on Track Records of A Quick One (Mono) and Sell Out (Stereo), and various bootlegs, notably "The Who `66" on the Polyboy label. Otherwise, the Mono version has never been released officially on CD.

Apollo59 13th Aug 2017 | | CD AlbumThe Waterboys - Fisherman's Blues | That's what I thought - it's a 3rd version.
Yes, all the matrix info is as stated:
321589 (in a string, followed by a space of approx 4 digits width) 3
This is why I think the origins of discs are more important than where they are sold. It's also far more accurate as there's no disputing what's printed on them, to the extent that we know this disc was pressed in Swindon.

Apollo59 12th Aug 2017 | | CD AlbumThe Waterboys - The Live Adventures Of The Waterboys | Back in the 1980's and had it been a perfect world, The Waterboys should have been where U2 and Simple Minds ended up but there's no accounting for the taste of the masses...

Apollo59 12th Aug 2017 | | CD AlbumU2 - Pop | @gregs78s: I would say it's definitely not unofficial. It's quite likely that it could have been made in Germany for Asian distribution, and by deduction I most probably did buy this in Indonesia.
I read somewhere a while back that both the Malaysian (which would cover a large part of Asia) and the US versions had the bleep, as this has.
I've just arrived at the letter W and when done will get the scanner out before I do anything else.
|
Apollo59 12th Aug 2017 | | CD AlbumBob Dylan - Tempest | @xiphophilos: That wouldn't surprise me, but perhaps that was some time ago. When I first joined I could immediately see the task ahead of me and thought, nah, I'll give it a couple of years then come back. So far I chose not to list around 1,000 bootlegs - too repetitive.
|
Apollo59 12th Aug 2017 | | CD AlbumScott Walker - The Drift | Perhaps one of the most astonishing in terms of content and brilliantly produced albums that I've ever heard. The song 'Jesse', about Elvis Presley's stillborn twin brother is perhaps an indicator for what's in store for the uninitiated. Any song from this album when played loud through a quality system could very possibly send some listeners rushing to find their Valium tablets.
|
Apollo59 12th Aug 2017 | | CD AlbumScott Walker - Scott 2 | Something must have gone wrong with production of UK stock as when I bought all 4 of the remasters in 2000, both Scott 2 & Scott 3 came with the 1992 edition sleeves and rear sleeves, with the new 2000 discs.
All 4 discs had a front sticker "Digital 24Bit HDCD Remastered Edition With Restored Original Sleeve".
New HDCD edition submitted and linked (mod.edit)

Apollo59 11th Aug 2017 | | CD AlbumU2 - Pop | @gregs78s: Yes, I can confirm and have just physically double-checked that it's Cat# 524 366-2. Barcode: 731452436627, also with PY811. This disc is made in Germany and has the censor bleep on track 12.
The disc matrix area has further information if of any help to identify this disc.

Thinking about, I'm certain that I did not buy this particular copy in UK or in Europe.
I would have bought it either in USA or Indonesia, as that's where I was (and only was) for most of 1997.
You are of course right about the other disc Cat# CIDU210 / 524 334-2 with PY811.
I mentioned simply because it was made in UK.

Apollo59 11th Aug 2017 | | CD AlbumU2 - Achtung Baby | @Lee Wrecker: You're dead right. Basically, from what I've worked out - they attract that huge contingent of sheep-people, the intellectually challenged. A lot of whom are from (and I'm not being critical but just making a point of fact) the lesser salubrious areas. There's also a heavy duty Roman Catholic contingent who can identify with Bono's psychobabble religious imagery claptrap. I know this to be true coming from where I come from - a city with enormous religious bigotry - and also being able to identify who's who and who is what etc.
I mean, how many songs about angels can one man write? It's astonishing.
The 'guitar' player is a joke and showed himself up for what he is - a downright charlatan - in that DVD with Jimmy Page, "It Might Get Loud". I bet Page had a very good laugh to himself at his 'abilities'.
As for the 'drummer', for want of a better word, he must be the most useless tool that ever positioned himself behind a kit. He simply has not progressed any further than a junior member of the Boys Brigade. He's seemingly incapable of playing any other drums apart from the one snare. It's very hard going trying to listen to for any length of time.
If it weren't for Brian Eno, we would not be hearing anything like as listenable as evidenced on Achtung Baby, as was very much the case with next 2 albums that followed Achtung Baby, where Eno's input was a great deal less.
U2 definitely fall into the same cesspit as Oasis, Paul Weller, Stone Roses and whomever else excels in mediocrity.
In fact I probably loathe about 95% of the titles listed on this site and must admit to having a quiet laugh to myself upon seeing the latest daily entries. I'd have shot myself out of pity for owning some of them. Hey ho, it must be wonderful to be so clueless.
|
Apollo59 11th Aug 2017 | | CD AlbumBob Dylan - Tempest | @xiphophilos: OK. However, you understand what I was saying.
I fully intend to scan stuff and will do when I finish the entries, fingernails withstanding pulling all these cases apart. I'd also much prefer just to do the scanning on its own without the footer of listing the track info too. Another thing is that I never for a second expected to have to list quite so many discs as it must be running to about 60%. But there again, looking at the titles that get entered by others, I'm not in the least bit surprised as there's absolutely no accounting for taste.
