carey jeggs 17th Feb 2022 | | BookBret Easton Ellis - American Psycho | Why does Ellis have the Crystals singing Be My Baby, the Ronettes singing Then He Kissed Me and the Lovin' Spoonful singing Cherish? Are these Bateman's errors on account of him being an unreliable narrator or not being a sixties person?

|
carey jeggs 28th Oct 2020 | | CD AlbumIsaac Hayes - Black Moses | I have the original double LP which I bought when it was first released. In spite of all that cardboard there isn't a list of the tracks in the right order anywhere on the sleeve. However, the opened-out picture of Ike is about two thirds life size.
|
carey jeggs 28th Oct 2020 | | CD AlbumScott Walker - The Drift | On last night's University Challenge a fragment of Clara was played as one of the bonus questions about an artist who did covers for 4AD.The team quickly said Scott Walker, provoking Paxman to say,'Thank Heavens we didn't have to hear any more of it.'
|
carey jeggs 12th Jun 2020 | | Vinyl AlbumHapshash And The Coloured Coat - The Western Flier | When Mike Batt appeared on a recent episode of Pointless Celebrities.Xander was asking him about his long career, his work with The Wombles and Katie Melua etc. but when the subject of Liberty Records cropped up Batt looked panic-stricken.I could imagine his internal monologue.
'Xander's a gent but that Osman bastard is going to bring up Western Flier just when I thought it was safely dead and buried.'
The moment passed with something said about Elton John answering the same ad.
Batt sang the show out with Bright Eyes.I think a compromise had been reached.

carey jeggs 12th Jun 2020 | | TVThe Tomorrow People (1973 - 1979) | Nicholas Young was interviewed a few years ago about this.A young woman had recognised him in the street and said that when she watched it as a child she had a crush on him .He asked her to go for a drink with him but she replied,'That was then.'
You who turn the wheel and look to windward....etc.

carey jeggs 5th Jun 2019 | | TVMosley (1998) | Spoiled by miscasting Jonathan Cake in the title role. He's a fine actor but far too handsome and louche. The real Mosley was a humourless stiff with a face like a potato.

carey jeggs 19th Feb 2019 | | Vinyl AlbumThe Esquires [soul] - Get On Up And Get Away | After all these years I've only just noticed that the cat.number on the label starts with HA as opposed to HA-Q as it appears on the sleeve.
|
carey jeggs 25th Jan 2019 | | CD AlbumScott Walker + Sunn O)))) - Soused | 'A beating would do me a world of good' he sings on the first track and many would agree after sitting this out to the end. However Walker is one of the great humourists of our age and probably wanted us to say that.Besides,Neil McCormick hated it so he must be doing something right.
Bump the Beaky indeed.

Couldn't Sgt.Howie have arrested them all for aggravated folk singing?
|
carey jeggs 27th Aug 2018 | | BookIan Fleming - Live And Let Die | The most notoriously racist of the Bond novels although,to be fair,Fleming gives his black characters plenty of agency. There's a lot of sexism as well but the most interesting feature is the ageism expressed through Bond's and Leiter's visit to St.Petersburg Fla.
e.g.'It's a terrifying sight, all these old people with their spectacles and hearing-aids and clicking false teeth.'
'There's practically no crime, except cheating at bridge and Canasta.' plus the reference to Sidewalk Davenports.
This uncharitableness about old people in Florida resurfaced in the seventies with the Jimmy Buffett song Migration. As Buffett is now seventy-two and the Icy Blast should have started to blow it might be a case of Not So Bloody Clever Now,Are We?
|
carey jeggs 10th Aug 2018 | | Vinyl AlbumHapshash And The Coloured Coat - The Western Flier | The front cover picture and the reference to John Ivor Golliwog seem to have been removed for the American market.
Now on to the mystery of Michael Mayhew. He appears on one of the cover pictures together with Mike Batt and Nigel Waymouth. In the Wiki entry for Hapshash his name is one of a handful, out of the numerous personages who have passed through this outfit, not to be provided with a link.So who was he?Where has he been and what has he done since?
Well.Brenda Blethyn's husband is the former head of graphic design at the National Theatre and his name is.....Michael Mayhew.Bearing in mind that Hapshash were a very arty-farty sort of group,it seems to me feasible that this could be the same man.

carey jeggs 18th Jul 2018 | | BookCharles L. Harness - The Paradox Men | I tried to re-read this recently but got bored and gave up halfway through.I prefer Van Vogt for this sort of thing.
One thing it does have going for it though is my favourite name for a fictional spaceship.
M.John Harrison came close with Heartless Bastard but Harness just beats that with Toynbee Twenty-Two.
Toynbee Twenty-Two.Its five year mission: to spread sanctimoniousness throughout the Galaxy.
