Sleepy Hall And His Collegians - At Your Command / How The Time Can Fly (Whenever I'm With You)
Although “Sleepy Hall” (John Nelson) was an actual musician, it is unlikely he participated in these ARC sessions that use his name. This is the ARC house band, to my ears Victor Young is probably directing.

Both sound like Freddy Martin arrangements, as he is likely the director here.

Two tracks from the ARC house band. Both sides have the unmistakable Freddy Martin reed arrangements.

Bing Crosby - A Fella With An Umbrella / Blue Shadows On The Trail
Both tracks timed with the release of the two musical films, approximately June 1, 1948.
In “Easter Parade”, Judy Garland and Fred Astaire performed the song.
In “Melody Time”, Roy Rogers and The Sons Of The Pioneers performed the song

Alvino Rey - (It's Gonna Depend On) The Way That The Wind Blows / California Sunbeam
Billboard reviewed this August 24, 1946, so assuming the trade mag got to this in their usual 3 to 10 days for publication, August would be the likely month of release.

Bennie Moten's Kansas City Orchestra - Moten's Swing / Toby
Might more be my unclear or inaccurate wording. I just meant he wasn’t playing on the session, Durham did the arranging. Moten may well have directed. I did credit Basie on piano. Moten had pretty much turned over the piano bench to the Count by the end of 1929

Bennie Moten's Kansas City Orchestra - Moten's Swing / Toby
This was Moten’s last session, though neither Moten were present. The band was broke. Eddie Durham arranged this session that included Hot Lips Page tp; Eddie Barefield cl,as; Ben Webster ts.
The nucleus of the Basie band is here, Joe Keyes-tp; Dan Minor-tb; Jack Washington- as,bar; Walter Page- bass; Basie-p; and Jimmy Rushing- v would all be present when Count Basie cut his first discs in 1937 with the full band.

Eddie Fisher - Excerpts From Eddie Fisher Album “May I Sing To You”
I left the sleeve out of the lead position, but I have every reason to believe it came with this disc. This was part of my Dad’s collection from his days in radio in the early-mid ‘50’s and untouched since then. The number “3185” is written on the top left corner, mostly cut off when I cropped the image. This sleeve may not be exclusive to this disc, however.

Mark Antony Recording Orchestra - In A Little Waterfront Tavern / Just A Bar Maid
URAB was an early song poem label, among other things. Based in New York City, they also provided transcription services.
The Mark Antony Recording “Orchestra” is a piano, accordion and for the A side, they even throw in a trumpet.
Poor quality disc, URAB must gave gotten a deal on leftover porous wartime shellac with its high clay ratio, pits, bubbles and inclusions.
The B side is a tale of a barmaid who mixes strong drinks and gets her male clients to lavish her with money and gifts. Imagine that. (I once dated a bartender, it was amazing the stuff she brought home daily. Most of it she gave to me- except the tips. I even had her hawking their old records -remember that guys ..and gals). What a racket.

Wingy Mannone - Lulu's Back In Town / Sweet And Slow
Nappy LaMare, comments on A side.
Two of the more memorable songs from the film starring Dick Powell, Joan Blondell, Adolfe Menjou, Mills Brothers, Ted Fio Rito.
Other memorable songs: A Quarter To Nine, Outside Of You, The Pig And The Cow, Flagenheim’s Odorless Cheese. (What? You don’t remember the last two?)
Trivia: Blondell was married to Menjou at the time, but a relationship sparked between Joan and Dick Powell, they would later marry.

Joe Haymes - I Wish I Could Shimmy Like My Sister Kate / That's A Plenty
Maybe not the best version of the Haymes band to attempt these tunes. A bit stiff. “Kate” is good enough, but the flip sounds like a military band trying to swing. Credit for that goes to the rhythm section of Jack Faye, bass (main culprit- ever hear of him? Didn’t think so), and Charlie Bush, drums. There is that chance they were looking for a throwback sound, I suppose, but seems unlikely at the dawn of the swing era.

Henry Allen - There's A House In Harlem For Sale / Rug Cutter Swing
Two wonderful sides by this unit.
House In Harlem is a fine blues based theme featuring nice solos from Buster Bailey cl, Keg Johnson tb, and Allen, open horn.
Rug Cutter is a thing of beauty. A great solo from Bailey, Hilton Jefferson as,. A muted but sometimes growling HRA, and Claude Jones tb. All propelled by a lithe and supple rhythm section of a graceful Lawrence Lucie, g, Walter Johnson swings lightly on the drums and Elmer James* drives the tune with his bass, thumping the tub in just the right spots. Horace Henderson gets a few bars on piano. Jones and HRA on the ride out. “Really In there,” as they used to say.
• not convinced of this Rust line up, sure sounds like Pops Foster to me, and if that’s the case, might be Paul Barbarin, drums

Emery Deutsch - Long Hair Swing / On The Isle Of Bong Bong
Thought I’d be the first to add one by this group, as he was reasonably popular in this era. (The 45 side already has a few entries)
By 1940, most bands had jumped on the Swing bandwagon (even Shep Fields, for cripes sake). Outside of the leader’s solo violin , it features mostly section work, kind of like Larry Clinton.
The top side might almost be confused for an Eddie South record- (I said “almost”)
As for side B, I have friends who have spent far too much time there.

Swanee Swingers - Slappin' The Bass / Take It Easy
Top side features solos by Chelsea Quealey- tp. Woody- cl. Saxie Mansfield, Sonny Lee- tb, George Wartner- guitar, Walter Yoder plays bass.
On the flip, Woody turns in one of his early “blues” vocals. These would be highlights once he formed his own band later in the year, using some members of this unit. The March 31 session would be Jonses’ last before reforming in 1937 with mostly new personnel.

Hoosier Hot Shots - Sentimental Gentleman From Georgia / Farmer Gray
I’ve always had a curious relationship with this group. I’ve never been able to jump on board completely, but there is some attractive element in this country novelty group. They occasionally show that they could actually play jazz, and their early sides have a disparate quality of part hot and part corn. They are entertaining certainly, but the slide whistle and slap tongue clarinet keeps them from being taken at all seriously. Hezzie’s washboard is a contraption to marvel, with its accumulated add-ons of bulb horns, tiny cymbals and other noise makers. (it now resides in an Indiana museum). Their early sides are certainly the most engaging musically, this one no exception. This could be accurately described as “hot corn”
Okay Hezzie?

Two of 8 sides Durham cut for Cormac in May 1950. By the time of this release in late 1950, he had been made music director at the label.

Walter Wiggins Orchestra - Deep In The Arms Of Love / Somebody Mighty Like You
While Brian Rust in ADBD credits the addition of a Marimba or Xylophone on the Lanin session, there is none to be heard. However, the Wirges A side does feature one prominently, not listed in the session details in the same book. This is likely one of the Green Brothers.
