@DeweyGill, the Canadian 216000 series records weren't pressed from Victor masters, which would explain the lack of a US release. According to Steven C. Barr, 216000-series masters were recorded in Montreal.
Unfortunately it's a bit like trying to listen to music while hail is pounding on the windows, seven pounds of bacon are frying on the stove and the first world war is raging right outside the window, but this is indeed a really good performance. "Robert" could've been making records, and not just sizzly lacquer ones.
The result looks good to me scrough! Much clearer. I use GIMP normally, I'll try using the sharpen feature the next time I have one like this to upload and see if it helps in the same way.
For the record, this label was already badly faded, so to bring out the writing even as much as I did, in GIMP I went to Colours>Hue & Saturation and increased the saturation of the yellow a bit and increased the lightness, and decreased the lightness of the green a bit; trying to find a balance between legibility and a natural appearance.
Thanks for the lyrics, and the corrections! As mentioned, I don't think they took into consideration how legible these labels would be 100 years later when they designed them :-)
Very difficult to get these shiny green and yellow labels to scan legibly. The A-side is an auld and well-known German folk song. mp3, courtesy of DAHR
A-side lyrics (German, Swabian dialect):
1) Muss i denn, muss i denn
zum Städtele hinaus, Städtele hinaus,
Und du, mein Schatz, bleibst hier?
Wenn i komm’, wenn i komm’,
wenn i wiedrum komm’, wiedrum komm'
Kehr’ i ein, mein Schatz, bei dir.
Kann i glei net allweil bei dir sein,
Han i doch mei Freud’ an dir!
Wenn i komm’, wenn i komm’,
wenn i wiedrum komm’, wiedrum komm'
Kehr’ i ein, mein Schatz, bei dir.
2) Wie du weinst, wie du weinst,
Dass i wandere muss, wandere muss,
Wie wenn d’ Lieb’ jetzt wär’ vorbei!
Sind au drauß, sind au drauß
Der Mädele viel, Mädele viel,
Lieber Schatz, i bleib dir treu.
Denk du net, wenn i ’ne Andre seh’,
No sei mein’ Lieb’ vorbei;
Sind au drauß, sind au drauß
Der Mädele viel, Mädele viel,
Lieber Schatz, i bleib dir treu.
3) Über’s Jahr, über’s Jahr,
Wenn me Träubele schneid’t, Träubele schneid’t,
Stell’ i hier mi wiedrum ein;
Bin i dann, bin i dann
Dein Schätzele noch, Schätzele noch,
So soll die Hochzeit sein.
Über’s Jahr, do ist mein’ Zeit vorbei,
Da g’hör’ i mein und dein;
Bin i dann, bin i dann
Dein Schätzele noch, Schätzele noch,
So soll die Hochzeit sein.
English translation:
1) Must I, then, must I, then
to the village must I then, village must I then,
And thou, my dear, stay here?
When I’m back, when I’m back,
When I finally return, finally return,
I’ll come straight to thee, I swear.
Though I can’t be always by thy side,
My joy is always in thee.
When I’m back, when I’m back,
When I finally return, finally return
I shall come home straight to thee.
2) How thou criest! How thou criest!
'Cause I have to go away, have to go away,
As though our love were now no more.
There are out there, out there,
so many girls, so many girls,
Beloved treasure, I will be true.
Even if I saw another lass,
do not think my love is through:
Let out there, let out there,
let out there be many girls, there be many girls,
Dearest love, I will be true.
3) In a year, in a year,
When the grapes are good and ripe, grapes are good and ripe,
Then here is where I shall be.
If by then, if by then,
if thy darling still I am, darling still I am
Then married we shall be.
In a year my term is o'er and done,
and then mine and thine I'll be;
If by then, if by then,
if thy darling still I am, darling still I am
Then married we shall be.
Thanks! I do wonder if the irony of a record called the "Standard Disc" only being playable on one specific brand of machine was lost on the original purchasers. Also, stamper numbers are 17 (A-side) and 13 (B-side).
Hi joeknapp, just FYI, you can make sure that these requests are seen by a mod by clicking the "Make Correction" button at the bottom of the page. It sometimes takes time, but every correction submitted eventually gets done.
"Degli Arditi Orchestra" is, I think, an ungrammatical or perhaps archaic or dialectical way of writing the band name.
"Orchestra" is the head noun and "degli Arditi" ("of the Arditi," plural) modifies it, so "Orchestra" should be before "degli Arditi." It could be that the name of the band was written the same way in a recording ledger and it was just copied that way on the label. If the intended meaning was "by the Arditi Orchestra" it would say "dell'Arditi Orchestra," "dell'" being singular. Here's another of their discs where the band name is written correctly.
[Verse 1]
The nation is sad as can be,
A message came over the sea,
A thousand or more, who sailed from our shore,
Have gone to eternity.
The Statue of Liberty high,
Must now have a tear in her eye,
I think it's a shame,
Some one is to blame,
But all we can do is just sigh!
[Chorus]
Some of us lost a true sweetheart,
Some of us lost a dear dad,
Some lost their mothers, sisters and brothers,
Some lost the best friends they had.
It's time they were stopping this warfare,
If women and children must drown,
Many brave hearts went to sleep in the deep,
When the Lusitania went down.
[Verse 2]
A lesson to all it should be,
When we feel like crossing the sea,
American ships, that sail from our slips,
Are safer for you and me.
A Yankee can go anywhere,
As long as Old Glory is there,
Altho' they were warned, The warning they scorned,
And now we must cry in despair;
There are users who use the function properly and cite actual sale prices, and that I can support, but it'd be nice if user bestdealonreallyoldrecords could be prevented from doing this kind of thing to boost the supposed dollar value of his own records. Discogs seller BARRYS-BARGAIN-BIN is already dreaming of flipping this OLD (@100 YEARS) 78 RPM SHELLAC 12" in VG condition for $66, a great BARGAIN compared to $10k. While Pinza, Ponselle and Martinelli sound magnificent here, and the comments on the linked videos indicate that opera fans like the recording, this is not a rare record; and in 1928 one could have probably had the artists and the entire Metropolitan Opera chorus and orchestra perform the songs live in one's own home for less than the record's alleged value :)
I'm sure there's already some flea market dealer, estate liquidator or inheritor of a box of dusty old records who's seen this and can't figure out why nobody's queueing up to give him 10 grand for one of these. I wonder if it would be possible to prevent new users from adding valuations until they've contributed a certain amount, since most of these fantasy prices seem to come from new accounts.
Translation:
A bouquet of flowers that comes from the mountain
Watch that it doesn't get wet, since I want to give it as a gift
Watch that it doesn't get wet, since I want to give it as a gift
I want to give it because it's a pretty bouquet
I'll give it to my dark-haired boy this evening when he comes
I'll give it to my dark-haired boy this evening when he comes
This evening when he comes, it'll be an ugly scene
Because Saturday evening, he didn't come to my place
Because Saturday evening, he didn't come to my place
It makes me weep and sigh on the bed of tears
Whatever will people say, whatever will they say of me?
Whatever will people say, whatever will they say of me?
They'll say I've been betrayed, betrayed in love
And so, my heart weeps, and forever will it weep
And so, my heart weeps, and forever will I weep!
"...the first items appearing in the Canadian Columbia catalogue not in either of the parent catalogues were a direct result of Canada entering World War I long before the U.S. This was the "Patriotic" series, bearing an ornamental red/white/blue label and numbers in a "P" series. The material, of course, was all war songs, varying from marches to more plebeian fare, and all that I have seen were recorded either in London or New York. The English sides may well have appeared also on U.K. Columbia, while the American sides seldom if ever appeared in their home country. Some thirty odd records appeared in this series, which inspired Berliner to deck some of his patriotic material in a similar label."
"...translating idiomatic expressions from one language to another could be a formidable task, often generating unwanted results. The 1915 recording "Wie Man Englisch Lernt," by Carl Frischer on Columbia [E]2797 plays on these difficulties. Carl Frischer informs his audience that his Irish girlfriend has betrayed him and now he has decided to share with us the letter in English he has written ending their relationship. His literal translations of German idioms into English create linguistic havoc resulting in a very poorly constructed letter in English and a very funny skit.
Excerpt:
"Mein liebes, süsses Zuckerherz, my dear little sweet sugar heart .... seitdem ich mich mit Dir verbunden habe ... (wissen Sie, es ist nicht so leicht, vom Deutschen ins Englische zu übersetzen, because the American can [question the houses?] which is the German) .... seitdem ich mich mit Dir verbunden habe .... since I farknipft myself with you hab ich 'rausgefunden have I found it out dass Du mich hintergehst that you go behind me hinterum und so habe ich den Entschluss gefasst and so I catched the resolution dass ich Dir nicht mehr den Hof machen will but now I don't like to make you any more the yard. Ich liebte Dich immer zum Fressen ganz I always liked you so very much that I liked to fress you aber jetzt ist's aus but but now is out.
Ich hab' Dir immer gesagt I always telled you so dass ich imstande bin that I am in the stand eine Familie zu ernähren to nourish a family, aber jetzt ist's aus now is out und ich kann Dich nur versichern and now I can make the insurance mit you dass ich die Sache nicht mehr auf die lange Bank schieben will but now I don't like to push the Käse [case pronounced like Käse = cheese] on the long bench any more. Lass' mich für immer in Frieden und in Ruhe let me for ever in quietness. Shurrup und halt's Maul, Du aufgeblasene alte Dampfnudel, you old busted-up steam noodle. Ich hab' überhaupt schon 'nen Katzenjammer von Dir ... das ist sehr schwer zu übersetzen, denn der Amerikaner weiss genau was "Katzenjammer" ist -- I got already pussy-sick from you. Jetzt will ich schließen -- now I want to finish myself -- Lebe wohl, Leberwurst"

"My dear sweet sugar heart ... my dear little sweet sugar heart .... since I linked up with you... (You know, it isn't too easy to translate from German into English, because the American can [question the houses?] which is the German) .... since I "farknipft" myself with you, I found out that you cheat on me, have I found it out that you go behind me in the back, and so I reached the decision .... and so I catch the resolution that I will no longer court you... but now I don't like to make you any more the yard. I could have devoured you entire with love ... I always liked you so very much that I liked to devour you, but now it's over ... but now is out. I have always told you ... I always "telled" you so ... that I am in a position... that I am in the stand to support a family ... to nourish a family, but now it's over ... now is out, and I can only assure you... and now I can make the insurance with you ...that I am not going to let this case keep pending ... now I don't like to push the cheese ["casee"] on the long bench any more. Leave me forever more in peace and alone ... let me for ever in quietness; shurrup ... and keep your trap shut, you old puffed-up dumpling ... you old busted-up steam noodle. I'm altogether sick and have a hang-over (katzenjammer) from you ... (You know, it isn't easy to translate from German to English, because Americans know precisely what a "katzenjammer" is) I'm already pussy-sick from you. Goodbye, liverwurst" [9]
