The Crimson Pirate (1952)
Review
What a fantastic rollicking adventure. Lancaster and Cravat had both in real life been trapeze partners. Watch Burt swing gloriously on the ship yardarms right at the opening. Throughout the movie they do acrobatics escaping the villains. An excellent story with tongue in cheek with plenty of humour, where his pirate crew help a group of democratic revolutionaries on a Caribbean island.

Run Silent Run Deep (1958)
Review
Another production of Harold Hecht. But he did not conceive this movie, it was United Artists who called on his company to produce it. It does not have the caliber of his other film classics. This comes off more as a drama among the crew. What a tired theme already - a stern captain creates friction with his crew. It was not satisfying enough as an adventure movie.
It was black and white by the way.
To me the most successful submarine movie was Up Periscope.

Apache (1954)
Based on a true story of an Apache warrior who escaped custody and wreaked havoc in the west before being caught again. One of the genre classics produced by Harold Hecht. Based on the novel "Broncho Apache" by Paul I. Wellman.

The Goldmine record catalog gives this date as 1959, which is when the stereo rerecordings are said to be done. It also says the album is only partially stereo.
I still want to hear this Love Letters for comparison.

The Drifters - Saturday Night At The Club
Obviously the UK northern soul crowd was interested in preserving these leftovers from the end of the Drifters' stay at Atlantic, to 1971. You get a couple of their last hits in A1 and B1. Then their last attempt in that vein with Up In The Streets Of Harlem of 1966. After that they and their manager Bert Berns just fell back on some pure black soul releases.
Only In America is a collectors' item. They recorded it in 1963 but did not release it. The backing track was then used for the Jay & The Americans recording.

Their best album collection of songs.
The only rival for consistency of songs happens to be I'll Take You Where the Music's Playing, which was past their hit period.
All original hit masters.

The back cover says "Certain tracks have been dubbed from disc due to the disappearance of the master tapes." This also means it was not made from digital masters. At least I hope.

The Drifters - Up On The Roof
Review
This was an "in-between" kind of a release. Just following the Save The Last Dance For Me album, which was also a compilation of recent singles. In fact all their albums except The Good Life were entirely compiled from singles. (This doesn't make them all "compilations").
It was time for a new album because of new singles like A1, A6, B2. Five songs are repeated from the Last Dance LP. Others are B sides and older singles going all the way back to 1958 with Ruby Baby.
Me being in that generation, I knew their 60s hits but knew nothing of those 50s songs, which had not been general hits really. Those did not make the album more appealing. So it was far inferior to the Last Dance album.
None feature Clyde McPhatter, altho some from the 50s have leads who sound like him.

B1 and B2 are different recordings / arrangements from the hit singles and original albums. I'd like to know the explanation for that.
The original B1 is too awesome to play around with it this way.

Minneapolis Symphony Orchestra, Antal Dorati - The Pines Of Rome / The Fountains Of Rome
I don't know what the original 1963 cover was, I don't think it was the same.
Also be careful about their 1953 similar recording.

Now this is my favorite recording of Fountains. The audio tracks clearly capture the surging water and other effects.

Clyde McPhatter - A Shot Of Rhythm And Blues
If you read the bottom right of the insert page 4, the notes are creating a terrible mixup with the two songs. When it says Lavender Lace differs from Roy Orbison's, it is referring to Sweet and Innocent. Terrible mistake. Considering what follows it.
They locate an old reference of Orbison and Melson writing Lavender Lace. So now is this also a typo and they meant Sweet and Innocent? There is no Orbison Lavender Lace. They allow that the reference may be mistaken. But we still aren't sure what they are talking about. Lavender Lace was written by Bob Montgomery around 1966, confirmed on the single.

Clyde McPhatter - A Shot Of Rhythm And Blues
This collection from Amy is mostly soul ballad oriented. That was not the way to get hits. But there are terrific standouts in a pop-rock vein - tracks 01 to 04. These were on singles, but were not enuf to get him hits at that stage. If nothing else you need to have his "A Shot Of Rhythm And Blues" in your collection.

Dean Martin - French Style
Arranged by Neil Hefti. Notice his rendition of The River Seine in this Youtube video from GeoSilverAway. Third of 3 songs.
What do you think of the rhythm right at the start? It never sounds like Dean got this right.
His practice was to go to the recording studio late at night and dub to the prerecorded backing track. No director. But it's a rare mistake.

Background video about Yellow Bird from GeoSilverMore.
There is also discussion there about whether the Kingston Trio sang it.

One comment says "Choucoune is now on YouTube in a few versions. Even before Petit Oiseaux, though, apparently the chorus melody was part of an old French folk song from the province of Anjou: "Non, non, non, je ne marierai pas". Which may have been played on French television on February 19 and March 18 of 1973."

Carry On Constable (1960)
You know the scene where the constables take a shower, the water is unexpectedly cold, and they all run out just holding towels in front? A recent release has cut that scene out.
One of the mysteries of planet Earth. Times are presumably getting more licencious, but they make cuts like this to reissues, and Google search thinks low necklines must be blocked.

Review
A superb thriller series written by Cannell and other writers, one of Cannell's high points. But it only lasted two seasons, 23 episodes. Cannell's series often left fervent fans hanging with short runs, The Hat Squad being another. This one had quite a violent intense edge.
Ray worked undercover helping people get out of trouble.

Produced by Tony Curtis. An extremely exciting story about Ukrainian [no not Roshen, okay?] kozaks. Problem was that when you saw the newspaper ad there was no picture indicating this and no description. People wouldn't know what "Taras Bulba" meant. That's a first and last name ya know?
