LaurenceD SUBS 14th Mar 2018 | | Classical ItemLotte Lenya, Lewis Ruth Band, Theo Mackeben - Weill: Three Penny Opera And Mahagonny | There were some spelling variations of the singers' names between the cover and label. I used the ones that I determined as the more 'correct' for the soloist and track listings. The variant forms: Erike Helmke, Eric Ponto, Willy Trenck-Trebitsch

LaurenceD SUBS 28th Feb 2018 | | Classical ItemThe B.B.C. Symphony Orchestra, Gary Bertini - Weill: Symphonies Nos. 1 & 2 | The first released recordings of these works.
LaurenceD SUBS 24th Feb 2018 | | Classical ItemLóránt Kovács, Győr Philharmonic, János Sándor - Joseph Haydn (Leopold Hoffmann), Michael Haydn Flute Concertos | The Hob. VII F. D 1 flute concerto was originally attributed to Joseph Haydn in the Breitkopf "Supplemento VI" of 1771. However the 1781 Breitkopf catalogue changed the attribution to Leopold Hoffmann.
The New Grove Dictionary for F.J. Haydn ©1982 lists the VII D major concerto under "spurious and doubtful", also attributing it to L. Hoffmann.

LaurenceD SUBS 17th Feb 2018 | | 78 RPMLes Paul And Mary Ford - Alabamy Bound / Texas Lady | Apologies, it was page 27. And here it is.
LaurenceD SUBS 16th Feb 2018 | | 78 RPMLes Paul And Mary Ford - Alabamy Bound / Texas Lady | RD, I had entered that date for that 45 as this is the release date that was listed in the booklet provided with the Legend and the Legacy box set. The booklet does not make a distinction between release dates for 78 rpm versus 45 rpm issues. I don't know whether that booklet was incorrect, or if Billboard received an advance copy prior to the 'official' release.
The Nov 26, 1955 Billboard ad on page 37 suggests that "Texas Lady" was Capitol's designated top side.
LaurenceD SUBS 10th Feb 2018 | | Vinyl AlbumThree Dog Night - Seven Separate Fools | I bought the reel-to-reel version of this album (seen here). While the cover art left much to be desired, it did mention an offer whereby anyone could obtain those cards by sending in $1 (supply limited) (offer expired Nov 1, 1972). Naturally, I picked up the tape a bit after the fact, so alas no cards.

LaurenceD SUBS 6th Feb 2018 | | Classical ItemAlfred Brendel, London Philharmonic Orchestra, Bernard Haitink - Beethoven: The 5 Piano Concertos; Choral Fantasy | The text for the Choral fantasy is credited to (Christoph) Kuffner on this release. There has been some debate about that, various musicologists suggesting that the author may have been Georg Friedrich Treitschke. In any event the text and the music were written in haste in order to be premiered at the benefit concert of Dec 22, 1808.

LaurenceD SUBS 6th Feb 2018 | | Vinyl AlbumElvis Presley - Separate Ways | I brake for Elvis!
LaurenceD SUBS 28th Jan 2018 | | 78 RPMNick Lucas - Don't Call Me Sweetheart Anymore / Bye Bye Blackbird | Masters acquired from the Hucksters label, I believe.
LaurenceD SUBS 28th Jan 2018 | | 78 RPMNick Lucas - Side By Side / Tip Toe Through The Tulips With Me | These masters were purchased from the Hucksters label. I found a Billboard ad from June 19, 1948 for the Hucksters Nick Lucas releases. And here is a page showing a label scan from a Hucksters record.
These Hucksters releases must be quite scarce; I have yet to encounter one.

LaurenceD SUBS 23rd Jan 2018 | | Classical ItemBasler Kammerorchester - J. S. Bach | Looks excellent to me. Any clue as to the release date?
LaurenceD SUBS 23rd Jan 2018 | | Classical ItemSan Francisco Symphony, Edo De Waart - John Adams: The Chairman Dances, Other Works | Much of the blue parts of the design (such as the Nonesuch logo) on my disc seems to be missing, apparently from a printing defect.
LaurenceD SUBS 17th Jan 2018 | | 78 RPMBill Jacoby And Tootsie Mac Duff - Dance, Ballerina, Dance (Burlesque Version) / Don't Let Me Have To Read You | I was curious as to the identity of Tootsie Mac Duff (or MacDuff), but all I could find is this obit which I presume is hers, from March 2009.
LaurenceD SUBS 17th Jan 2018 | | CD AlbumBillie Holiday - The Quintessential Billie Holiday Volume 5, 1937-1938 | Note the "Holliday" spelling on the insert back and inlay.
LaurenceD SUBS 17th Jan 2018 | | Classical ItemKarl Richter - Bach: Goldberg-Variationen | I was unsure how to regard the "aspekte" name; as a series, a sub-label or as the main label. I see that the 6.41337 cat number had been used prior to the aspekte release, though.
This 1956 recording was the first of five Goldbergs issued by Richter.
LaurenceD SUBS 17th Jan 2018 | | Vinyl AlbumThe Rolling Stones - Sticky Fingers | Note that although this has been linked to the other Sticky Fingers releases, the track lineup is not quite the same. "Let It Rock" is included in place of "Sister Morphine".
LaurenceD SUBS 1st Jan 2018 | | Vinyl AlbumBuddy Holly - The Complete Buddy Holly | My copy was issued as MCA/Coral, cat # CDMSP 807. Also the box cover and inner sleeves have some minor differences in the layout. Wondering whether to create a new entry for it...
LaurenceD SUBS 30th Dec 2017 | | Classical ItemWiener Philharmoniker, Leonard Bernstein - Beethoven: Symphonie No. 5 | These single disc releases were issued to coincide with the PBS TV airing of performances starting Jan 25, 1982. The scheduled release dates were:
- symphonies 1-4: Jan 1982
- symphony 5: Jan or Feb, not sure
- symphonies 6-9: Feb 1982
LaurenceD SUBS 27th Dec 2017 | | Vinyl AlbumVarious Artists - [untitled] | The Clark Sisters side contains one song that later appeared on their Beauty Shop Beat Coral LP, but I do not yet know if this is the same recording.
The May Company side of the disc contains five radio spots for May Company's music department, each nearly identical except for the record label that is mentioned. Only track B6 mentions a specific LP that is to be "released this week". Perhaps the 8/7/59 date on the label is when this disc was pressed, as "Dinah, Yes Indeed" was not released until late September or early October of that year.
If there's a connection between the Robert E Lee song and the May Company ad campaign, I have not been able to track it down.
LaurenceD SUBS 26th Dec 2017 | | 78 RPMFreddie Hall [Vaudeville] - Coney Island Washboard / I'm In Love With The Mother Of The Girl I Love | This Freddie Hall is a vaudeville entertainer. Possibly the same person as on London L.518, but definitely not the Freddie Hall on Chance CH-1159.
LaurenceD SUBS 25th Dec 2017 | | Vinyl AlbumRitchie Valens - Ritchie Valens | Added some minor variant labels. I'm accustomed to seeing Jerry Leiber's surname misspelled, but the composer credit on "Framed" is a new one on me!
LaurenceD SUBS 18th Dec 2017 | | Classical ItemWiener Philharmoniker, Claudio Abbado - Brahms: 21 Ungarische Tänze | My copy is from RCA music Service: R 115408
Released as part of the Brahms Edition (orchestral works) box set, and also released separately.
LaurenceD SUBS 26th Nov 2017 | | Vinyl AlbumTennessee Ernie Ford - Nearer The Cross | For me, this has to be one of the most frequently encountered LPs while crate-digging in my neck of the woods.
LaurenceD SUBS 26th Nov 2017 | | Classical ItemGeza Anda, Camerata Academica Des Salzburger Mozarteums - Mozart: Die 4 Letzten Klavierkonzerte | The cover for this 2-LP set is a little unusual, as it's a box-shaped container with a foam-rubber insert separating the two discs. I promptly removed that insert before it began to disintegrate.
LaurenceD SUBS 26th Nov 2017 | | Classical ItemLeonhardt-Consort, Gustav Leonhardt - Bach: Cembalokonzerte BWV 1055, 1056, 1053 | Not sure about dating this one. I see that there are other, presumably earlier releases as SAWT 9538-B (no 6.41099), and "Royal Sound Stereo" on back, no Leonhardt or Edison on front.
LaurenceD SUBS 25th Nov 2017 | | Classical ItemEnglish Chamber Orchestra, Johannes Somary - J.S. Bach: The Brandenburg Concertos (Nos. 1-6, Complete) | My copy of this release was acquired from Book of the Month Club around 1981.
LaurenceD SUBS 25th Nov 2017 | | Vinyl AlbumLesley Gore - Love Me By Name | Added cover, inner sleeve and easier-to-read labels, with acknowledgement to swbcfc.
LaurenceD SUBS 8th Nov 2017 | | 78 RPMLes Paul - Nola / Jealous | Added alternate images, with additional composer James Burns for "Nola". And moved "Nola" to the top side.
LaurenceD SUBS 17th Oct 2017 | | Vinyl AlbumRoland Kirk - Left And Right | A snippet from L. Feather's review: "Aside from beauty, spirit, control, taste, humor and limitless versatility, Kirk has very little to offer."
LaurenceD SUBS 15th Oct 2017 | | Classical ItemGustav Leonhardt, Gerhard Schmidt-Gaden, David Willcocks - Johann Sebastian Bach: Das Kantatenwerk Folge 4 | In case you're wondering what happened to BWV 15, "Denn du wirst meine Seele nicht in der Hölle lassen" was initially attributed to J.S. Bach, but scholars later determined it to be the work of his cousin Johann Ludwig Bach and reassigned it to the latter as JLB 21.
