LaurenceD SUBS 24th Feb 2018		Classical Item Lóránt Kovács, Győr Philharmonic, János Sándor - Joseph Haydn (Leopold Hoffmann), Michael Haydn Flute Concertos	The Hob. VII F. D 1 flute concerto was originally attributed to Joseph Haydn in the Breitkopf "Supplemento VI" of 1771. However the 1781 Breitkopf catalogue changed the attribution to Leopold Hoffmann. The New Grove Dictionary for F.J. Haydn ©1982 lists the VII D major concerto under "spurious and doubtful", also attributing it to L. Hoffmann.

LaurenceD SUBS 16th Feb 2018		78 RPM Les Paul And Mary Ford - Alabamy Bound / Texas Lady	RD, I had entered that date for that 45 as this is the release date that was listed in the booklet provided with the Legend and the Legacy box set. The booklet does not make a distinction between release dates for 78 rpm versus 45 rpm issues. I don't know whether that booklet was incorrect, or if Billboard received an advance copy prior to the 'official' release. The Nov 26, 1955 Billboard ad on page 37 suggests that "Texas Lady" was Capitol's designated top side.
LaurenceD SUBS 10th Feb 2018		Vinyl Album Three Dog Night - Seven Separate Fools	I bought the reel-to-reel version of this album (seen here). While the cover art left much to be desired, it did mention an offer whereby anyone could obtain those cards by sending in $1 (supply limited) (offer expired Nov 1, 1972). Naturally, I picked up the tape a bit after the fact, so alas no cards.
LaurenceD SUBS 6th Feb 2018		Classical Item Alfred Brendel, London Philharmonic Orchestra, Bernard Haitink - Beethoven: The 5 Piano Concertos; Choral Fantasy	The text for the Choral fantasy is credited to (Christoph) Kuffner on this release. There has been some debate about that, various musicologists suggesting that the author may have been Georg Friedrich Treitschke. In any event the text and the music were written in haste in order to be premiered at the benefit concert of Dec 22, 1808.

I found a Billboard ad from June 19, 1948 for the Hucksters Nick Lucas releases. And here is a page showing a label scan from a Hucksters record. These Hucksters releases must be quite scarce; I have yet to encounter one.

LaurenceD SUBS 17th Jan 2018		Classical Item Karl Richter - Bach: Goldberg-Variationen	I was unsure how to regard the "aspekte" name; as a series, a sub-label or as the main label. I see that the 6.41337 cat number had been used prior to the aspekte release, though. This 1956 recording was the first of five Goldbergs issued by Richter.

LaurenceD SUBS 27th Dec 2017		Vinyl Album Various Artists - [untitled]	The Clark Sisters side contains one song that later appeared on their Beauty Shop Beat Coral LP, but I do not yet know if this is the same recording. The May Company side of the disc contains five radio spots for May Company's music department, each nearly identical except for the record label that is mentioned. Only track B6 mentions a specific LP that is to be "released this week". Perhaps the 8/7/59 date on the label is when this disc was pressed, as "Dinah, Yes Indeed" was not released until late September or early October of that year. If there's a connection between the Robert E Lee song and the May Company ad campaign, I have not been able to track it down.

LaurenceD SUBS 26th Nov 2017		Classical Item Geza Anda, Camerata Academica Des Salzburger Mozarteums - Mozart: Die 4 Letzten Klavierkonzerte	The cover for this 2-LP set is a little unusual, as it's a box-shaped container with a foam-rubber insert separating the two discs. I promptly removed that insert before it began to disintegrate.

Bach, but scholars later determined it to be the work of his cousin Johann Ludwig Bach and reassigned it to the latter as JLB 21.
