Neil Forbes 22nd May 2015 | | TVScreen Two (1986 - 1987) | I'd have thought that, in Britain's soul-crazy northern regions, this show would have them glued to their TV sets, so a DVD set of this would no sooner hit the shelves than it would be snapped up immediately - A consignment of copies of this show would sell out in the blink of an eye!

Neil Forbes 22nd May 2015 | | TVHeartbeat (1992 - 2010) | Sometimes they get the music right but wrong props. An example was the Australian miniseries Viet Nam which had Nicholas Eadie and Nicole Kidman in leading roles. Scene in episode one - Nicholas Eadie's character has been drafted into National Service and a farewell party is held. A HMV Minigram is playing an LP of The Easybeats but a shot of the player reveals not a vintage Parlophone-label album but a modern red-labelled Albert Productions issue. The year is supposed to be 1965, the Alberts label didn't exist until 1970 and the red-labelled version didn't appear until the 1980s. Another scene a couple of episodes into the series, Nicole Kidman's character gets a parting gift , an LP, supposedly of Procol Harum. We see her playing Whiter Shade Of Pale on a combo TV/Stereo Radiogram. The wooden lid is well polished so we can see the label as the disc spins. Is it a Deram issue? No! It's a Motown label we see reflected in that lid because the track is being played off the "Big Chill" soundtrack album. The year the scene is set in is supposed to be 1967 but we all know when the Big Chill was released, movie and soundtrack album, don't we?
Getting the props right is equally as important as getting the music to match the era, and both are EXTREMELY important!

Neil Forbes 22nd May 2015 | | Vinyl AlbumVarious Artists - 20 Number 1's | Seems to be a mish-mash of different eras! Companies that put compilations such as this together would be wise to try sticking within one period(or decade) and perhaps put the songs in a (roughly) chronological order. Just a suggestion.
Having said that, I had a bugger of a job getting onto this website earlier today. There seems to be some issues with the website. At first attempt got onto site but log-in failed. Successive attempts at getting back in failed thereafter and I had to give up. It was a very short internet session for this little black duck(quack!)

Neil Forbes 20th May 2015 | | TVChildren Of The Stones (1977) | I don't think this one ever made it onto Australian screens, what have I missed here? I know of the Avebury Stones from an edition from series 1 of Most Haunted when the stones an the nearby Red Lion Pub were investigated, but this series draws a blank with me. Was it about ghosts?
Neil Forbes 20th May 2015 | | TVHeartbeat (1992 - 2010) | This show started out on ABC in Australia, but after three or so series, moved to a commercial station(ATN-Sydney and affiliates in other states) plus regional affiliate, Prime. One jarring aspect of the show was how the music often didn't match the period in which a given episode was set. Example - Episode set in the year 1964, opening scene, a couple canoodling in a hayloft, a radio is playing in the background, the song: Son-Of-A-Preacher-Man by Dusty Springfield, which wasn't recorded or issued until 1968. That really detracted from what was otherwise a good show, sloppy or non-existent research into the music of the era.

Neil Forbes 20th May 2015 | | TVRandall And Hopkirk (Deceased) (1969 - 1970) | I may have veered off the topic of Randall & Hopkirk a bit, but as I have not yet put up a frame for "Most Haunted", I just though I'd mention it here. I haven't uploaded any images in a while, as I maxed out on my data allotment(4Gb every 45 days) from Virgin Broadband and I'm trying to build it back up, byte by byte, so-to-speak(ha-ha). By then this TV thread will be out of its beta test mode and fully up-and-running. My quip about Most Haunted being aired on Living TV shows the irony - a TV station with such a name(station identification) airing shows about ghosts and dead people was enough to tickle this little black duck's funny-bone!

Neil Forbes 20th May 2015 | | Vinyl AlbumThe Beatles - Revolver | Biff, Dick James was a very busy boy during the 1960s and 1970s! Not only did he set up Northern Songs to handle the Lennon/McCartney output(plus any efforts by Harrison and Starr[Starkey]), he also set up Pacermusic to handle Gerry Marsden's compositions or collaborations, as recorded on Columbia by Gerry & The Pacemakers. Then, of course, 1970 and his record label, DJM with Elton John as his first signing. The label was distributed in the UK by Pye and here in Australia by Festival. I think the label may have lasted into the 1980s but Elton John had left the label well before then.

Neil Forbes 18th May 2015 | | Vinyl AlbumVarious Artists - The World Of Hits Vol. III | Hi, Sheepdip! Just a tip, when you've scanned your label image, using the brightness and contrast settings, sharpen the image by about 50% and apply perhaps the same amount in brightness. In resizing, set about 40%, this should bring the image and file size down to what is required for this website. Hope that's of some help. With the brightness and contrast settings, a bit of experimentation either side of the 50% mark might be required. If you're not entirely happy with the settings, hit ctrl+z to undo any changes so you can continue experimenting. Once you're happy with the result, hit ctrl+s to save the changes. Ctrl+z is a keyboard shortcut for undoing changes, Ctrl+s is likewise for saving files(saves wear & tear on the poor ol' mouse!). Cheers!

Neil Forbes 17th May 2015 | | TVRandall And Hopkirk (Deceased) (1969 - 1970) | I've got the first three seasons of Most Haunted stored on one of my external hard-drives. It was a good show at the start, though host Yvette Fielding's nerves must've been sorely tested by some of the locations she and her team had visited, but I can understand why Richard Felix left the show after about the sixth season, claiming the show had become like "Scooby-Doo"(cartoon ghost-chasing dog), the substance gave way to showiness.

Neil Forbes 17th May 2015 | | TVThe Benny Hill Show (1955 - 1989) | Greg, did Benny do battle with "Two-Ton Ted From Tiddington"?(as suggested in Ernie[The Fastest Milkcart In The West])
Neil Forbes 17th May 2015 | | Vinyl AlbumVarious Artists - What's Happening...Stateside? | By my recollection, some of the last acts appearing on Stateside included Vicki Lawrence(The Night The Lights Went Out In Georgia, Ships In The Night, He Did With Me are the three biggies for here between 1972 and 1974) and The Peppers(Pepper Box was a moderate hit but the LP which featured it was issued on Axis) and they weren't even American - They were French! The recording was sourced from Event Records, a French label.
Neil Forbes 17th May 2015 | | Vinyl AlbumVarious Artists - The World Of Hits Vol. III | You're getting there, Sheepdip! Just takes a bit of experimentation to get it right, but the labels, though a bit bright, do look better and are far more legible.
Neil Forbes 17th May 2015 | | Vinyl AlbumGene Pitney - The Many Sides Of Gene Pitney | Actually it was a solo hit for Col Joye, but you are right about Town Without Pity, Goodiesguy. To my knowledge, there never was a stereo mix of this song, and they used the same backing track when Pitney recorded a German song called "Bleibe Bei Mir", which was supposed to be a German version of Town Without Pity but the German lyrics virtually make for a wholly different song than the English er... version(/). "Bleibe Bei Mir" translates in English as "Stay By Me".

Neil Forbes 15th May 2015 | | TVRandall And Hopkirk (Deceased) (1969 - 1970) | By the way, who in Britain watched Most Haunted on Living TV? That had to be the biggest joke ever played on TV viewers ever! A TV station calling itself "Living TV" yet its shows are all(or mostly) about ghosts and dead people! Aaaah dear, really cracks me up!
Neil Forbes 15th May 2015 | | TVRandall And Hopkirk (Deceased) (1969 - 1970) | I know how many of you in the UK feel, a similar situation existed here in Australia and Record Collector, as a fellow Australian can attest to this as well. In NSW, Victoria and Queensland, outside the respective state capital cities, there was only the ABC(national non-commercial) and one incumbent local commercial station. This applied from 1956(and as more regional commercial and ABC stations were established) until a roll-out of what was called "market aggregation" from the mid-1980s to the early 1990s where one station, aligned with one of the three capital city commercial stations, would enter the markets of two other stations in neighbouring markets, and the local stations from those other markets would do likewise. However, the unseen trap was sprung about five years into the last round of aggregations(Northern NSW) where the local station on the North Coast, NRTV(Northern Rivers Television) lost its "local" identity to its Sydney affiliate, TEN, which spelled out the channel it transmitted on instead of identifying the station itself, the operators of that station are United Telecasters Ltd. Aggregation was a huge mistake, to be honest. What should've happened was each station stay within its own market and retain its autonomy while a second new station was opened up in each market, then the two regional stations would then take their choice of shows on offer from each of the three capital city stations - and when digital came along and each regional broadcaster had those extra two "platforms" to provide shows for, then the capital city stations could supply them thus.

Neil Forbes 15th May 2015 | | Vinyl AlbumVarious Artists - What's Happening...Stateside? | RC, 1977? Is that the year EMI finally dropped the Stateside label her in Australia? If so it would've been a loss to the industry in some ways as it was through that label we got to hear some of the early magic of Motown. In Britain, Stateside had the early outings by Herb Alpert & The Tijuana Brass... just so much great stuff came out through that label, it was a shame to lose it. But then it was symptomatic of the times when so many household names just vanished, especially in the CD era. A great loss indeed!
Neil Forbes 15th May 2015 | | TVRandall And Hopkirk (Deceased) (1969 - 1970) | It's shows like this that TV stations in Australia ought to be showing more of, and a hell of a lot less of those crappy "reality" shows!
Neil Forbes 15th May 2015 | | TVGet Some In! (1975 - 1978) | Brian Pettifer moved on eventually to Hamish(?) - Wouldn't you just know it.... Try to remember a favourite show and the lead character's last name escapes you? Frustratin', ain't it? I do remember it had Robert Carlisle - just now remembered! Just as I typed in the lead actor's name it hit me(ouch!) "Hamish MacBeth". Pettifer played a local storekeeper in that show. Anyone remember?
Neil Forbes 15th May 2015 | | TVRandall And Hopkirk (Deceased) (1969 - 1970) | Well there ya go, Biff! Learn something new all the time on this fantastic website, as did I! Edwin Astley as Pete(Who?) Townshend's dad-in-law? That one snuck up on me from behind!
Cheers!
Neil Forbes 15th May 2015 | | TVPeppa Pig (2004 - Now) | Gotta say - the lead character's nothing more than a "ham"(ha-ha)!
Neil Forbes 15th May 2015 | | TVRed Dwarf (1988 - Now) | The word on this one is - it's been renewed for two more seasons! Smeggin' great news! Now everyone, get ready to practice your Arnold Rimmer salutes!
Neil Forbes 13th May 2015 | | Vinyl AlbumVarious Artists - What's Happening...Stateside? | Yeah, Biff! That MCA(Universal) crowd really are a bunch of pricks!
Neil Forbes 13th May 2015 | | TVRandall And Hopkirk (Deceased) (1969 - 1970) | I really liked the theme music! Really was a perfect fit for the show! Did you know Annette Andre was an Aussie?
Neil Forbes 13th May 2015 | | TVOn The Buses (1969 - 1973) | Get them busses out, Butler! I knew a bus driver who worked for Sid Fogg's Buses in the Newcastle(Aust.) suburb of Stockton, His name is Andrew Butler but his middle name was - you guessed it, "Stanley". He'd get the usual "Blakey" line thrown at him on occasions but the joke wore thin after a while.
Neil Forbes 13th May 2015 | | TVRandall And Hopkirk (Deceased) (1969 - 1970) | I think you may have the year wrong. From blurb printed with the box-set of DVDs which carry then tire series(a friend of mine has a copy), shows this to be produced entirely within the calendar year, 1968. But, having said that, this is the show that kept me up late at nights watching in black & white(as Colour TV was still three years away in 1972 when the Newcastle[Australia] station, NBN was airing this already-by-then-four-year-old show) I loved it. It was great seeing it in colour when I borrowed my friend's DVD set. A remake years later was apparently panned by the critics, which goes to show, the original is best!
Neil Forbes 13th May 2015 | | TVOn The Buses (1969 - 1973) | You're forgetting Cicely Courtnedge(Australian-born) who played "Mum" in series 1, and Doris Hare who took over that role from series 2 onwards, and not forgetting Michael Robins as Arthur, Stan's brother-in-law. Aah yes, always great for a laugh! We didn't get to see this in colour until 1975, but even in reruns it was still great comedy!
Neil Forbes 13th May 2015 | | TVPeppa Pig (2004 - Now) | Just exactly how much are they paying the script(?)writers for this show? And yes, it infests the air-time on ABC-2/4 here in Australia(ABC-2/4 is somewhat schitzophrenic - From 6.00am to 7.00pm it runs as ABC4Kids, with programming for tiny-tots, then from 7.00pm as ABC-2 for adult audiences until it closes around 1.00 or 2.00am).
Neil Forbes 13th May 2015 | | Vinyl AlbumVarious Artists - What's Happening...Stateside? | I take your point, Biff, especially since the Geffen label didn't even exist at the time Chuck Berry was actively recording. And don't get me started on Universal! Those greedy bastards want to swallow up every other label they can get their grubby paws on! It seems to me the anti-monopoly laws in various countries aren't even worth the paper on which they're printed!
As to the Stateside label revival to issue R. & B. compilations, the bulk of the labels in the USA that had their content issued in Britain or Australia during the label's heyday are either no longer existing or have been swallowed up by Greedy MCA(Universal).
Neil Forbes 13th May 2015 | | Vinyl AlbumVarious Artists - What's Happening...Stateside? | Roger, when we see that some of these tracks weren't actually on Stateside(or as you wrote it, $tateside), it might be seen as somewhat misleading but it's not the first time EMI has done this. In Australia EMI issued a compilation called "20 Country Tracks as TVS-6, meaning it was just three issues after 20 Explosive Hits, putting it around Spring, 1970(September to October, here). This LP, issued carrying the Capitol label, contained Australian-sourced recordings by artists and groups like Slim Dusty, Johnny Ashcroft, Lionel Long and Tex Morton, who were on the Australian division of EMI's Columbia label.
Neil Forbes 13th May 2015 | | Vinyl AlbumThe Moody Blues With The London Festival Orchestra - Days Of Future Passed | Could've been so, MM, that might explain why the labels on some Decca-issue releases were smaller than on others.
