Various Artists - Welcome To Columbia Country 20 Great Country Stars 20 Great Country Performances
Good mix of rare content. Too often record companies issuing albums like this tend to "play it safe" and issue only the more familiar stuff from any given artist or group. CBS seems to be stepping "outside their comfort zone" with this album. While I know some of the titles, I generally associate them with other artists. The one I remember best is the opening cut, "Long Black Veil" by Johnny Cash.

Trainman's comment: "15 tracks a side? Columbia trying to out K-Tel K-Tel?" It most certainly looks that way! And think of how the tracks would've been "hacked to pieces" to get them on to a single disc! Far better to have spread the tracks over a two-LP set.

Poor ol' Paul McCartney! Gets it in the neck every time, don't he? If it isn't making out like he's dead when he's very much alive, it's getting his name wrong on these exotic labels! Even EMI in England got it wrong once, showing his name as McArtney(leaving out the 'C') on an early promo issue(I think it was for Love Me Do). He can't take a trick now, can he?

Fair enough Trainman, but I was simply pointing out that I've added the labels where the other person who uploaded this album hadn't done so. I don't see the point of adding my labels to his cover, but if he wishes and he asks, I will add my labels to his cover. And I think he only added the front cover.

R.C. said "Don't you love those fictional liner notes". All depends on whether or not the author knows what he/she is writing about. Some do, others haven't got the foggiest notion of the subject they're covering.

Trainman, I looked at that other stereo version, no labels! As you see here, I've included the A- and B-side labels.

Trainman, sorry I didn't see that! If there are variations between this and the other stereo pressing, link this one in. If this is exactly the same as that other stereo version, delete this one. By the way, the matrix numbers are: A - SP-4123; B - SP-4124, if that info is of any use to you.

I should state "for the record" that I "tracked" this and two other American-issue Herb Alpert & Tijuana Brass LPs down at my local recycling centre at Salamander Bay.(how's that/ - Two puns in once sentence!).

Did you buy it, R.C.? What nationality was the pressing?

I saw this submitted a few weeks ago and noted it was the mono version, so figured I should upload my stereo version to balance(pun intended) things out a bit.
If Moderator wishes to link the two, feel free to do so.

Look at that label, will you? The Egyptians have tried to create a 33 1/3 rpm "device" to answer EMI's 45rpm device for this label. If the Egyptians didn't then someone did! Looks a bit odd, really.

All I was saying is: If K-Tel(anywhere in the world) kept the number of tracks per LP side down to 8 or 9, they wouldn't need to edit the tracks down so much.

I don't know that the tracks "would not have appealed to us" R.C. Just about all the tracks on this album have turned up in Australia in one album or another. The Roger Miller tracks have been on other Majestic issues as well as the Philips LP "Golden Greats" by Miller himself, and several have been issued here on 45rpm as well. Johnny Bond's Hot Rod Lincoln and Ten Little Bottles are two that have been issued on the London label(separate issues). They are a few examples but there are too many to name of those that have been issued here.

Why does American K-Tel insist on squeezing 24 tracks onto an album? Did they not realise they'd have to edit the tracks(cut some down by a minute or more) to fit them onto the disc? An LP side can go 32 minutes at a pinch but 12 tracks on a side is sure to bulge the envelope somewhat. When K-Tel(still as Majestic) issued 24 Solid Hits in 1969 for Australia, at least 3 quarters of the content(18 tracks) were cut-down versions that ran anything up to 2 minutes less on that album than they would've on their original 45rpm issues. When the Power Hits LP came out later in 1969, the total of tracks was cut back to 20(10 per side) even then "The Real Thing"(Russell Morris) had to be shortened to roughly half it's original length. That's probably the reason why the track numbers dropped still further, to 9, then 8 per side, to avoid having to cut a song down.

Some of these tracks are very likely to turn up on other albums, particularly Majestic/K-Tel issues, R.C.

Here's the last of my Select label LPs, out of sequence I know but thought I'd keep the "volumes" together, as it were. This album looked to be a one-off as it had no volume number. Shouldn't have claimed 20 original stars, though! Johnny Cash appears three times, solo, duet with June Carter, then with a church choir. Lee Conway and Bill Anderson each appear twice, and Loretta Lynn has two tracks, one of them with Conway Twitty, the other being a solo offering.

From R.C., re: Port Stephens FM - "radio boot camp" Yep! Just about hit the nail on the head there, R.C. Quite an accurate description. And you know the saddest thing about it, if you're unjustly treated by the committee of PSFM or any other community radio station, there's no avenue of redress because the A.C.M.A.(Australian Communications & Media Authority) won't do a bloody thing to help you!

The Hollies - Hallo, The Hollies
From R.C.: "By 1979 they were on Polydor then in 1983 on WEA", maybe so but that's not the point, R.C. The recordings contained in this compilation date from the group's Parlophone(EMI) days, and as such, EMI owns them, and should be the only company to issue these tracks in ALL markets where EMI is represented.

Thanks, Trainman. Much appreciated! Now we can see the composer credits together with USA publishing credits. Composer credits often useful for community radio presenters, gives them that extra bit of info to make them sound "authoritative" when doing their shows!

Polygram were issuing Hollies material sourced from the Parlophone label, that should be exclusively handled in Germany by EMI Electrola GmbH and appearing on the Odeon label in that market. Polygram has no business issuing any of these tracks in Germany or anywhere else for that matter!

Have you had any direct experience of Port Stephens FM in say, the last decade? I still have a few friends there, they're just "keeping their heads down and doing their shows as best they can, considering the interference they have to put up with from a committee of bullies!

Had occasion to spot the Aussie issue(original 1969 release) at Rices last Sunday. Had the "Stereo" panel printed top-right corner of front cover - spoils the look of the cover, I reckon!

I have to agree, R.C. Though I never actually heard Ward Austin, I was familiar with his ridiculous, cringe-worthy catchphrase: "Rickapooney and Fandoogley"(Isn't that just like fingers down a blackboard?). I think the DJs of the time were heavily influenced by American DJs(they may have heard them on tape). The absolute WORST example is Wolfman Jack!
Yes, thankfully our radio presenters HAVE toned down their presentation styles, to be plainer, simpler and more straight-forward, influenced by community radio, perhaps! Could'nt think of a better example!, But R.C., I ask again, are you still doing any radio sessions?

From R.C.: "A4 you would think they picked Wayne Newtons version" - They might not have been able to obtain the rights from RCA in the USA(Newton signed to them after a stint at MGM after leaving EMI's Capitol subsidiary).

Phil, I feel a bit of deja-vu here, I've had this conversation once before on 45Cat. For a label originating in Australia to have any REAL presence in Britain or anywhere else for that matter, its TRADEMARK should BE SEEN on the label of discs made in that territory! It's JUST NOT GOOD ENOUGH to be merely credited on the bottom of another company's label. ONJ was signed to PYE INTERNATIONAL, her records should've appeared here on Astor. then EMI when she joined them in 1974/5 then MCA in the early 1980s. For Festival to be truly INTERNATIONAL, they needed to have THEIR VERY OWN office, studios and processing facilities in those other markets.
