It surprises me that Monument were using RCA-Victor studios in 1969 when Monument had acquired the Sun studios off Sam Phillips in 1963(Phillips sold his Sun Records back-catalogue to Shelby Singleton). A6 on 45rpm had A3 as its flip-side, by the way. A follow-up single, "High Sheriff Of Calhoun Parish" got a little bit of radio airplay but did not trouble our chart compilers in Australia at all!

The K-Tels went for roughly the same price here in Australia about the same time. But are we talking $2, Australian or $2 American? Still the label and cover could've been a shade better than what we've seen here. Meanwhile Record Collector's scratching his head, trying to figure the album out.

R.C. said: "Loop Di Love is actually a cover version by shag originally done by a Dutch group in 1971" That's one on me - I wasn't aware of that. Should've picked it by the composer credits though.

Well I see you've "discovered" Loop Di Love. As for Superstition, I thought it was the complete version but I expect they'd have edited Nights in White Satin... it has a somewhat reptilian quality about it(it will "drag on" a bit... dragon - get it?). Part of the reason why the cut back from 10 to 9 tracks per side, I suppose.

Maybe so, R.C., but usually an album will have at least three, maybe four or five cuts on it of the year(1973 in this case), if only to justify the title. All very well the songs were still present on the charts in 1973, but they were issued in 1972, two of them from 1971 and another(the last cut) resurrected from as far back as 1967!

Like I said, without a side-by-side comparison, it's hard to say.(talking about the Hank Marvin photo here, for other 45world-members' info).

I was wondering where you got to, R.C.! "Papa..." was even better if you needed a toilet break.(ran better than 6 minutes to the best of my knowledge).

I don't think "Papa Was A Rolling Stone" by The Temptations should be in this compilation. Though it has a long intro, it's a vocal...
It was the 3rd of September,
A day I'll always remember,
'Cos that was the day
That my Daddy died....

The opening four lines to the song. Issued 1971.

I don't quite know if any of the tracks here saw the light of day on 45rpm singles(a check of 45cat. might answer that question) but I do like the title of A2, but it'd be a "bit of a drain"(ha-ha).

Gotta say the label's a bit "ordinary"! No effort made there to give a professional finish. The back cover's nothing to write home about either. The contents look like they range from 1965 to 1968, B8 and B10 look to be the newest of the tracks on the set, and because it's 24 tracks, I'd expect the tracks have been shortened to fit.

Somewhat of a misnomer, the title of this LP, Not one single track from 1973 on it! The bulk of the tracks date from 1972, a couple are from 1971(Raspberries and Michael Jackson) and right at the end, a reissued relic dug up from 1967. W. Scharf, the co-writer of "Ben" is Werner Scharfenberger, who, with Finni Busch wrote "Seemann..." for Lolita in 1960, and in 1965 wrote "Thank You Darling" for Diana Ross & The Supremes. The song was written in German, Diana, Flo and Mary dutifully obliged and performed it thus. But back to Explosive Hits '73, 18 tracks in this LP, think EMI may have abandoned the 20-hits format from this album onwards.

I'm not entirely sure that's the same photo of Hank Marvin as that on the Explosive Hits LP, R.C., not without a side-by-side comparison at any rate.

Someone certainly got short-changed here! A Stereo sticker may well have been attached to the cover but the label negates this as its prefix is PMCO - for the Mono version.

There really wasn't a valid reason for EMI not to use the proper artwork on either "With The Beatles" or "Beatles For Sale". All EMI Australia had were feeble excuses as to why they used the covers they did for these albums.

EMI Australia likely used the same excuse with the "Beatles For Sale" Australian cover. Do you think that might be the case, R.C.?

R.C.: "This is the label I have on the Australian issue" - Well, it's the same design at least. To make it Australian you'd have to add the following: Around the top edge "Made by EMI(Australia) Ltd., Sydney NSW", To the catalogue prefix add the letter 'O' and amend the number(if it isn't the same as the British issue), delete the "Recording First Published 1963"(a shame to have to do that) then add those oh-so-accursedly-ugly publishing company credit "stamps" across the centre of the label.

No, R.C.! You're on safe ground! Magic Marmalade was having a friendly dig at me over my attempted Indian "accent", which can't be replicated in print - not really.(guess I could be accused of "channelling" Peter Sellers - as per his song with Sofia Loren, Goodness Gracious Me).

Ppint, keep a close eye on that cobra! If he starts swaying from side to side, you can nab him and put him on the front of your car to be a "vindscreen viper"(ha-ha)! Seriously though, I have picked up the odd Indian EMI 45rpm singles and one on Warner that EMI pressed on their behalf. Interesting to note the prefix for EMI-Columbia is(or was) 45-DB in India for the reason the company was still issuing 78rpm versions of the same records they put on 45rpm. One of these I have is Peter & Gordon's "Woman". The Warner record was The Cascades' "Rhythm Of The Rain", by the way.

People can be very touchy, can they not, MM? Maybe we just ask everyone to "lighten up and have a laugh" Indian isn't the only accent I mimic. I can do Scottish(got a bit of Scottish blood running around somewhere in me), Irish, Liverpudlian, Italian, German too! Even learned the language. Funny thing is - I'll do the accent but when I actually speak in German, I do it with an Australian accent! Confuses things a bit, ay?

What I was saying in my fumbling attempt at comedy was that the Indian Parlophone label looked very close to that of England. To see what I mean, look up "A Collection Of Beatles Oldies".

There was an Explosive Hits '73! Had a quirky track called "Loop Di Love" by Shag(real name escapes me for the moment, but had a hit in 1965 called Everybody's Gone To The Moon) which I later found on a British Decca-issue 45 on the UK label. Much of the Explosive Hits '73 content was of 1971 to 1972 vintage. Probably had only a couple of 1973-vintage, just enough to justify the title. Will upload sometime soon.

Really was much of a muchness! K-Tel Australia and EMI racing each other to see which company could get their latest compilation out first(or so it might've seemed). K-Tel drawing on a wider arc of record companies for their album content while EMI seemed to be stuck with the labels it represented at the time for its album content - Ah but we may as well try to "catch the wind" than try to work out the machinations of LP compilations from K-Tel, EMI, Polygram or any other company.

Hi, R.C.! Taking your most recent remark first, if you have the facility on your computer to extract tracks from a CD, you could compile a CD version for yourself of the Australian "Believe In Music" album. Mind you, you'd to spread the contents evenly over two CDs(to replicate the LPs, no doubt), and to your second comment, the contents of the two different versions cater to vastly different eras in music tastes. The Australian album was a "nostalgia trip" delving back into the 1950s while the Canadian(and American) versions were of more contemporary music of the time(early 1970s), it would've been like comparing apples to oranges.

Yes, I'd borrowed a friend's copy once, many years ago to put Wayward Wind on cassette(yonks before we could make our own CDs). I'd often seen other copies of the LP at second-hand shops and recycling centres(where old LPs go to die). But, as I said, the make-up of this Canadian album, and its American counterpart(most likely) vary markedly from the Australian album in ways I've already explained some minutes ago.

Yeah, R.C., That's what I was getting at with my question. As newer LPs are issued, K-Tel "updates" the photo promoting the Record Selector device with one of their more recent LPs taking the front spot in the selector.

Looking at this LP now, I realise that it only shares its title with the Australian album. The artwork in the cover and the LP's contents vary wildly from the Aussie album.
The differences are:

Canadian: Single disc - 11 tracks per side, material of contemporary(early 1970s) vintage.
Australian: Two discs - 10 tracks per side, material of 1950s vintage, many issued as 78s.
