Various Artists - Super Hits Of The '70s: Have A Nice Day, Vol. 5
Track 11 - Games(Redeye) had been issued as a single in Australia in 1970/71 on the Festival label but the copy I have is on the American issued, Pentagram label. This sounds like a good series to have. Shame I'm not buying CDs anymore, I wouldn't mind getting hold of some of these volumes myself.

Yellow box logo(Axis)? I think that's the logo design that carried through to the CD format, and was revamped again later, round early 1990s.

R.C., Apollo 100 LP, yep! That's the one! And Axis logo on the top corner of John Lennon LP, the old original version of the logo, no doubt, with the prefix of the cat.# being AXIS-????

The Axis LP would've looked like either of those shown in the linked releases(shown below) or at least the cover would, anyway.

No surprises here, R.C.! They were ALL limited collector's items! I Wonder how many units of each title were pressed? Guess I'll never know the answer to that one.

R.C.'s comment: "I think endeavour was around over twelve months and finally sank". I couldn't say for certain, when the label was established. Apart from the Ray Charles compilation which carried the London label and Endeavour catalogue number, I have one other which carries the actual Endeavour label, it's a compilation of Apollo 100, which includes the hit, "Joy". I'll upload it in coming weeks so, "watch this space!"

I used to think those "buy Vol.1 - get Vol.2 free" arrangements were a bit of a con, quite frankly(I've got a couple of them, they were given to me, I didn't buy them). If they were intended as 2-record sets, why didn't they package them in gatefold sleeves?

I've bought quite a few J. & B. compilations(not this one, though. Never was much of a fan of John Lennon) in my time, as well as a few Dino albums on cassette or the odd LP. I have a Ray Charles compilation on the Endeavour/London label(record carries London label but Endeavour catalogue number and Endeavour logo on front cover). As I said earlier in this thread, these labels are good value in that you get the AUTHENTIC versions! No re-recordings, no sound-alikes, but the REAL THING(no, not that Russell Morris song, silly!), The GENUINE ARTICLE! And for someone like me who has done community radio(and been caught out with a couple of non-authentic versions), I absolutely INSIST on authenticity!

Tom Jones - The Very Best Of Tom Jones
The cover shows a young Tom Jones in his heyday, likely taken on the set of his TV show.
He looks a hell of a lot older now!

Thanks R.C.! I couldn't think of the third LP issued in 1973, you've filled in the blank space. Note also the name Barry has been corrected. Thanks, Moderator! My typing is sometimes afflicted by what I term "keyboard gremlins"! They jump in every so often and cause havoc with what I'm trying to type on my keyboard. If I had a gun.....

I think Majestic used to only put out one LP per year until about 1969, then we started seeing two or three in the same year. Super Bad, Rock Explosion and one other during 1973, at my guess.

Say You'll Stay Until Tomorrow came out on the EMI-International label as EMI-11385 in 1977. The tracks on this album are sourced from Decca. Jones "jumped ship" in 1977 from Decca to a brief period at EMI before moving on to other labels.

I don't know. I must've been hiding under a rock or something but these later K-Tel ads from the 70s don't ring any bells with me. I can remember(vaguely) earlier ads for 24 Solid Hits and 20 Power Hits, plus promos for their Country Greats, but they go back to 1969/70. I can't remember NBN running any album promos for K-Tel after 1972 or so... or maybe I've just blocked them out of my mind.

Fellow goes to see his doctor and says "Doc, I have this awful compulsion to visit karaoke bars and sing Delilah, Green, Green Grass Of Home and What's New Pussycat". The doc looks at him and says "my boy, you've come down with TomJonesitis!" The patient asks: "is that rare?" To which the doc replies.... wait for it.... "It's Not Unusual!"

Thanks for that, R.C.! Shame though. You'd think that by cutting back from 24 to 20 tracks, there'd be room aplenty for FULL versions of songs, But K-Tel EDITED Susie Darlin'? I think I'll go find a nice quiet corner and cry my eyes out(ha-ha).

A lot of J. & B. album covers were same, front and back. The label of this one suggests a later release than was posted. Up to about 1982 or 1983, J. & B. labels were basic yellow with the brand at the top. So I think Record Collector is very likely correct in dating this at 1983.

My post vanished as soon as I finished it! I was saying how J. & B., Dino and Endeavour were good value as budget labels because they always used AUTHENTIC versions of songs they include in their compilations. Sadly the same can't be said of K-Tel in its latter issues. By far the worst for using non-authentic content is NZ's Music World(Hughes Leisure Corp.). You're lucky if you find two in 30 that are authentic in their compilations! I avoid that label like the plague! For budget compilations, it's J. & B., Dino and Endeavour for me any day of the week!

I'll ask the moderator to make the correction as my own attempt failed. The typo I can only attribute to "keyboard gremlins"! As for the track itself, surprisingly it's quite a good rendition, even surpasses the original Robin Luke version of 15 years earlier(1958). So I don't mind it at all!

The Beatles - The Beatles' Greatest Hits Volumes 1 And 2
$90! Hell the Red('62-'66) and Blue('67-'70) albums didn't cost that much, even if bought together when they were first issued around 1973, about the same time as this one. I'm not surprised EMI withdrew it! At $90 a pop, not many people are gonna fork out that sort of moolah for a Beatles compilation, when they've likely got every track spread over other LPs, not even diehard Beatles fans would go as far as $90, even for a two-LP set!

I think, with the overall similarity of several Beatles album covers on any given title(with a few exceptions here and there), the only real variance in these issues, seems to be the differing labels in each market., might be an idea to just put the label and, maybe the rear of the cover on the website. Just a suggestion.

Okay, R.C., scratch the Spec-Savers crack! Your vision's okay, You picked up on the difference between Columbia and Parlophone. Pity the guy or girl who worked at EMI, Britain way back then... got his/her columbias and parlophones all mixed up. If he/she had been more haphazard in grabbing labels, this issue could've been on HMV, or Regal-Zonophone..... EEEEEK!

Yes, but not the Australian Super Bad compilation, I'm fairly sure of that much. And as you say, R.C., the issue of Rock Explosion is around November, 1973, so yes, it could well be the last under the Majestic brand.

This NZ issue's cover has seen better days! R.C. your orange-label issue could be a late 1970s to early-1980s re-issue. EMI was always repackaging The Beatles LP's, and even throwing together various compilations of their records, like Essential Beatles, for instance. The "Fab Four" were EMI's most profitable "cash-cow", so it seems.

You've picked a song I particularly liked as well. I think this was John J. Francis's only big hit. He recorded for RCA in the late 60s as part of a duo or trio, The John Francis collexion(spelled deliberately with an 'X') but had no success.
