Creedence Clearwater Revival - Chronicle (The 20 Greatest Hits)
That entry also has a comment from me, which I had completely forgotten about - old age is creeping up too fast! Anyway, that back insert with the Big Beat logo also shows the Fantasy logo, but the member who uploaded that cover didn't upload the disc itself, the other disc images uploaded by different members don't show Big Beat. Unless there is actually a disc with Big Beat on it, I would be inclined to merge these two entries; what do you think, leonard?

Creedence Clearwater Revival - Chronicle (The 20 Greatest Hits)
Added June 1987 as the release date, taken from the big red 1988 Music Master catalogue, also matching the copyright year on the package, and this collection is listed in Ace's Winter 1987/88 catalogue. The only fly in the ointment is that both MM and the Ace catalogue list this as being on the Big Beat label (ditto for Volume 2), but none of the five variant pressings of this issue in Discogs are on Big Beat, and Ace's next catalogue (1989) shows it as being on Fantasy, so perhaps this was originally intended to be on Big Beat and Ace changed their mind before manufacture (but after the 1987/88 catalogue went to press), or Big Beat in the catalogue was just a mistake in the first place.

Hi Helen, I would think that's one of RCA's notorious Dynaflex pressings, as the A4RS- matrix numbers are RCA's; extra confirmation could be found in the deadwax, if there is a stamped H (Hollywood factory), I (Indianapolis factory) or R (Rockaway factory). RCA pressed a lot for Motown in the 60s and 70s, but the only one in my collection I remember as being Dynaflex-thin is Gloria Jones' SHARE MY LOVE.

Got that slightly wrong - Motown actually moved to Electrola in September 1969, per an ad in Billboard dated 20th September of that year, so this LP could be a 1969 release also. Am now leaving comments on some Electrola-manufactured 45's in 45cat that have dates before September!

I would say that this has to be very late 1967, or 1968; "In And Out Of Love" is the latest track here, entering the US and UK charts in November 1967. The Motown licence moved from CBS to EMI Electrola from the beginning of 1969, so 1968 is the latest that this can be, certainly not 1970.

Hi Helen, July 1982 is the date given in the discography in Sharon Davis' MOTOWN: THE HISTORY; the 14th was a Wednesday, and I think most US record companies used Tuesdays before July 2015, but I don't know whether or not Motown followed that convention back then.

On track A4, Burlington Music is the song's publisher, not a co-writer, see the label. Oddly, the side 2 label shows a different publisher for track B1 (Warner Bros.) than on the cover (Feldman). I seem to remember reading somewhere that Track were putting Braille titles on many (all?) of their releases around this time, I know that they did it for The Who's ODDS AND SODS.

Capitol has only been part of Universal since 2012/2013, whereas the big fire was in 2008, so Capitol's tapes wouldn't have been affected by that.

Graham Parker And The Rumour - High Times
Hi Lee, definitely a New Zealand issue, PolyGram's Wellington address appears on the bottom right of the back cover. The label layout and fonts are typical of NZ PolyGram pressings, as is the ring around the outer edge of the label. If you look in the deadwax you will probably find the number 700 stamped or etched, that's the plant ID for PRS Ltd. (PolyGram Record Services) in the Wellington suburb of Miramar.

Discogs has a couple of Aussie pressings: this one (which I think might be an EMI pressing), and this one, which has CBS matrixes; PolyGram didn't have a factory in Australia, mostly relying on EMI and CBS for its Aussie pressings, and 1979 is around the time that more NZ pressings started appearing in Australian stores. This pressing could have been sold in Australia as well, but I think this entry should be made New Zealand as the primary country of release.

The copyright credit for PolyGram Records Pty. Ltd. suggests that this compilation originated in Australia - the NZ company name didn't have "Pty." in it, as you can see on your back cover, a couple of lines beneath the PolyGram logo.

The Supremes - I Hear A Symphony
Hi, I think that pressing would be the first half of 1973 at the latest; reason being that the EMI company name changed in mid-1973 to EMI Records Ltd., and the label layout changed, showing "EMI RECORDS LTD." in the left circumference, and "MADE IN GT. BRITAIN" at the bottom, as seen on this Jackson 5 album.

Uploaded an ad from Billboard issue dated 8 August 1964 (Cash Box had the same ad in the same week, but no mention of this album in Record World). Based on this, I have set the release date to August 1964; the pressing shown is the ABC one from 1974, and this was re-pressed again by MCA on their brown and beige label when they bought ABC in 1979 (see linked release).

Gerald Alston - Open Invitation
1990 release was on 25th September 1990 according to the US Copyright Office (apparently put back a week from the 18th September notified in Schwann), distributed by MCA, catalogue number MOTD-6298. Subsequent reissues don't (or rather, shouldn't) change the copyright year, unless there is new musical, textual, or pictorial material, but release year for this version distributed by PolyGram would be 1991 or 1992, unless this site is happy to accept 3746362982 as a variant of MOTD-6298.

The Stone Poneys - Evergreen Vol. 2/Vol. III
It appears that in Norway the copyright term for sound recordings is 50 years; STONE PONEYS AND FRIENDS VOL. III is the later of the albums here, being originally released in 1968, so both were out of Norwegian copyright when this disc was released in 2020. So, unofficial (presumably there's no mention of Capitol or Universal), but not actually illegal.

Further digging through the trades brought up an article in Cashbox stating that Joe Fields of Muse Records finalised the deal to purchase Savoy's jazz and r&b catalogue just before New Years' Day 1984, so 1984 is the most likely date for the SJ pressing. I wonder now if I was too hasty in entering the 1978 release date here, because under Arista the label didn't have "Jazz" in its name, and the label design was the same except for that word, so do we consider them to be the same label or not? I tend towards "yes", but would that cause difficulties?

I just happen to have an original Savoy release sheet showing this album in my possession, and it gives the release date as 28 June 1978. The reissue via SJ Records, Inc. is about 1983/1984, IIRC.

This one issued between January 1988 and July 1989, being the dates of two MCA catalogues that I have; this didn't make it into the Schwann catalogues until Spring 1992, for some reason. Discogs has 1988, which seems to have come from a Who fan site, but the disc originally came in a longbox, which is right for that period.

Hi Helen, yes, those two variations would be from 1969 and 1970, but Discogs has this one which mentions Funckler Records, and would appear to be the earliest variation from 1967; as all variations have the same label name and catalogue number, we can keep 1967 as the release year.

Marvin Gaye And Mary Wells - Together
Hi Helen, that was me! 1991 is the only year that this could have been issued, because:
(1) it shows distribution by Uni Distribution Corp., which was a name change from MCA Distribution Corporation that happened in early 1991;
(2) Motown moved to PolyGram for distribution in October 1991 (actually, the deal took effect on Sunday 29th September; I doubt that anything was issued on Monday 30th).

I haven't been able to find a release month, much less day, for this, I can only pin it down to summer or early fall 1991, based on its non-appearance in Schwann Spectrum's Summer 1991 edition, then appearing (without a date) in the Fall 1991 edition.

MCA Coral was probably accidental, or one of the factories had run out of proper MCA labels, as I've seen other MCA reissues in the 37000 or 1600 mid-price series (e.g. The Who) where some pressings have MCA Coral labels on them; this one also exists on the three main MCA label designs - black & rainbow, brown & beige, and sky-clouds-rainbow.

Hi Helen, September 1982 was the first issue date for this catalogue number, so that's the only date this site is interested in, unlike Discogs, and any label variations can all be added to this one entry. The 1981 date that RPFiller mentioned is just the copyright date shown on the inner sleeve, which was used for several years.

Hi Roger, that date might be right, as any Motown catalogue number starting with 37463 is October 1991 or later, after the label moved from MCA to PolyGram distribution; Discogs seems to have got the date from an Amazon Japan import listing. However, this was first issued on CD through MCA as MOTD-5461 on 30th January 1990, so as this later version also has 5461 as part of the catalogue number, this could just be considered a variant of the MCA issue. For what it's worth, it took the Schwann catalogue until their Summer 1992 issue (published in May) to update the catalogue number.

The Supremes - A Bit Of Liverpool
P.S. Motown's 2-on-1 CD of this album and "T.C.B." shows the writer as Alan Price and publisher as Al Gallico Music Corp, although the actual writing credit on the Animals UK single was the more accurate "Trad. arr. A. Price", which I seem to recall was contentious within the group, as they all played a part in arranging it; the Don't Forget The Motor City website has played safe by attributing the song to "Public Domain", without a publisher!

I said:

This appears to have been released in Australia during June 2003 - I bought my copy (Euro pressing like this one) at JB Hi-Fi on the 19th of that month - but damned if I can find it in Platterlog's weekly release sheets!

Mea culpa! Didn't go back far enough, did I? This appears in Platterlog's weekly new release sheet for 28th April 2003. So, could a friendly mod make this International, now that Aussie release via Universal is confirmed? Ta!

As an aside, I didn't know about the archived ARIA reports at the National Library of Australia back in 2016, but looking through them now, this isn't listed in them, even though they have listed some new releases by some real lightweights (Michael Franks, Chico DeBarge, even Ronan Keating FFS!), so it looks to me that ARIA is somewhat less complete than Platterlog (who themselves occasionally missed, or weren't told about, some things).

[Mod edit: Done]
