PhilMH SUBS 12th Jun 2022 | | CD AlbumThe Rolling Stones - On Air | Listed as a new release in the ARIA report for the week commencing 27th November 2017, meaning release on Friday 1st December (in line with international release days being on Fridays since July 2015; 1st December also found at the US pauseandplay.com site).

PhilMH SUBS 12th Jun 2022 | | Vinyl AlbumOliver Nelson, Jimmy Forrest, King Curtis - Soul Battle | Release date according to 1988 Music Master catalogue was May of that year; I assume that to be correct, as this album is listed in Ace's 1989 Jazz Dance catalogue (it's no longer in print, so doesn't show in the "Releases By Month" section of their website). I'll request a correction.
P.S.: Listed as a new release in Music Week, 28th May 1988.

PhilMH SUBS 12th Jun 2022 | | Vinyl AlbumOliver Nelson, Jimmy Forrest, King Curtis - Soul Battle | Not a 1962 issue, but a late 1980's reissue via Ace Records Ltd. who are mentioned on the bottom of the back cover. Other giveaways are copyright credit to Fantasy, Inc. (who didn't own Prestige in 1962, and didn't adopt that company name until 1982), and the barcode. Original UK release in 1963 was on the Esquire label.

PhilMH SUBS 11th Jun 2022 | | Classical ItemLorengar, Hoppe, Crass, Hartemann - Charles Gounod: Cäcilienmesse (Messe Solennelle) | Probably 1970's I would think, certainly no earlier than 1969, which is when EMI's international catalogue numbering system was introduced. Also, the label for Germany should properly be Die Stimme Seines Herrn, it looks to me that Odeon is just on a sticker, so I suspect that this copy was an export to a country where EMI didn't own the Nipper trademark, such as the USA (though Schwann catalogues right through the 1970s were still showing the original USA edition on Angel; Schwann sometimes missed things, however). Also, EMI shouldn't be used as a label where there is another label brand present; the logo just signifies that the main label brand is part of the EMI group.

PhilMH SUBS 8th Jun 2022 | | Vinyl AlbumThe Three Degrees - So Much Love | Hopefully one of our Aussie members has this hidden away somewhere and can supply images; it is not to be found anywhere on the 'net, but I might try Adelaide's few second-hand record shops if the weather behaves itself over the next week or so!
PhilMH SUBS 8th Jun 2022 | | Vinyl AlbumThe Bel-Airs - Giddy Up-A-Ding Dong | Label on this one is actually Brunwick, without an S - the label images at Discogs make it clearer:
https://www.discogs.com/release/5862725-The-Bel-Airs-Giddy-Up-A-Ding-Dong
(Correction has been requested).
PhilMH SUBS 8th Jun 2022 | | Vinyl AlbumThe Chi-Lites - A Lonely Man | Release date from Decca's 1976 main catalogue is January 1975 (correction has been requested).

PhilMH SUBS 8th Jun 2022 | | CD AlbumGladys Knight And The Pips - If I Were Your Woman + Standing Ovation | Ah, the joys of CD buying in the globalisation age, Helen! It can be tricky to find out exactly where a particular product was released, because the "made in EU" statement on the package is only there because of an EU regulation that says that that statement has to be there for anything that is made in an EU member country; it does not in itself indicate that the product was released throughout the EU. Similarly. "Made in Germany" on the disc does not necessarily mean "released in Germany". I think Roger Foster assumed these to be UK releases as they originated from Universal-Island Records Ltd., one of the UK Universal companies. However, I have had a quick look this morning in the online catalogues of both the French and German National LIbraries, and both of them have this CD (I didn't check the other four, but I expect they will be there too); Wikipedia tells me that in Germany, it has been a legal requirement since 1973 for the German publishers of recordings to deposit two copies of a recording with the German Music Archive branch of the library, and though I haven't yet found confirmation of a similar requirement for France, I imagine the situation there is the same.
Nor does "Made in EU" necessarily mean "released only in the EU", as the Platterlog catalogue that was published here in Australia tells me that these collections were released by Universal Music Australia on 22nd January 2007; Australian record companies frequently obtain stock from their overseas parents (usually UK/Europe, but occasionally US), especially for back catalogue releases like these, and they are marketed as "local" releases in the same way as any Australian-manufactured product. This probably happens to a greater degree worldwide now as many CD (and vinyl) factories have closed, and both Universal and Sony maintain international divisions that co-ordinate the worldwide domestic releases of their products, and the addresses of those divisions (Hilversum, Holland and Gütersloh, Germany) frequently appear on the packages (Warner Music probably has a similar setup, but I haven't noticed anything on their products to indicate that).
So, in short, Roger added these as UK in good faith, but they are not only UK, and not only Europe, but are the much-discussed and controversial "International" designation.

PhilMH SUBS 7th Jun 2022 | | Vinyl AlbumLouis Armstrong - Louis' Great Hits Recorded Live | 1970 is copyright year from the US Brunswick issue; this was actually issued in September 1974, according to Decca's 1976 main catalogue (correction has been requested).
PhilMH SUBS 3rd Jun 2022 | | Vinyl AlbumVarious Artists - American Graffiti | Not a 1981 release, because MCA was still distributed by Ariola in Germany (and other countries) then. This WEA-distributed issue is 1984 at the earliest, as that is the year that WEA's international distribution of MCA commenced. And this is probably not just Germany either, but Europe (or at least France, going by the price code mentioned on the back cover), and looks like an earlier pressing/printing (no barcode) of this Europe issue.
PhilMH SUBS 3rd Jun 2022 | | CD AlbumJeanne And The Darlings / The Charmels - We're The Soul Girls! – The Complete Volt Recordings | Ace are still issuing compilations of Stax recordings licensed from Concord - this one and this one came out last year - but they are on the Kent label, rather than Stax.
PhilMH SUBS 2nd Jun 2022 | | CD AlbumThe Temptations - A Song For You | This is not a 1986 release, because the company name shown is Motown Record Company, L.P., which only came into being in June 1988; the 1986 copyright date comes from this album's previous issue on a 2-on-1 CD coupled with MASTERPIECE. This CD is listed as a new release in the February 1989 Schwann CD catalogue, so actual release would have been a month or two before that.
PhilMH SUBS 30th May 2022 | | Vinyl AlbumLittle Richard - Here's Little Richard | Label name and catalogue number of the 80's pressing are the same, so ok to add here.
PhilMH SUBS 23rd May 2022 | | CD AlbumMartha Reeves And The Vandellas - Black Magic | Correct release date is 24 April 1990, as per Schwann InMusic issue dated April 15-May15, 1990 (correction submitted).
PhilMH SUBS 23rd May 2022 | | CD AlbumKing Curtis - Old Gold / Doing The Dixie Twist | Hi Doccus, I can't help with your questions (1) & (2), but the answer to (3) is Uptown Down South, which was compiled by longtime Kent label manager Ady Croasdell, who is still at Ace as far as I know, so you could try contacting him there.
PhilMH SUBS 17th May 2022 | | Vinyl AlbumThe Staple Singers - The Staple Singers | This is a cut-down version of the Riverside HAMMER AND NAILS album with the title track and "Gloryland" missing. This was issued in the same configuration (save for combining the two parts of "I'm Willin'" into one for this release) by Everest Archive of Gospel Music in 1969, though at the moment I don't know which version came first. Both versions have the same mistitling on track A2, which should be "Hear My Call, Here".
PhilMH SUBS 17th May 2022 | | Vinyl AlbumThe Staple Singers - Hammer And Nails | See Discogs entry for images, until someone can add their own here!
PhilMH SUBS 17th May 2022 | | CD AlbumDavid Gilmour - Live In Gdańsk | Definitely two issues, which should be separated, as the EMI name and brand was owned by Universal as of 2013, whilst the part of EMI Records Limited that Universal wasn't allowed to buy was renamed to Parlophone Records Limited, with any previously EMI-labelled releases being relabelled to Parlophone, so that version is a 2013 (or later) release.
PhilMH SUBS 12th May 2022 | | CD AlbumDoobie Brothers - Best Of The Doobies | This was probably released in September 2006; the 2nd August 2008 issue of Billboard has this on its Top Pop Catalogue albums chart, and says that it had been on the chart for 97 weeks; adding an extra week to make it 98 weeks takes it back to Saturday 16 September 2006, so the disc might have been released the previous Tuesday 12th.
PhilMH SUBS 2nd May 2022 | | CD AlbumVarious Artists - Daytrippers: 50 Classic Tracks From The Sixties By Original Artists | Is "25 Or 6 To 4" a sixties track?
In terms of when it was recorded, yes - apparently recorded in 1969 for Chicago's eponymous second album, which was released in January 1970, with the single being released in June.
PhilMH SUBS 2nd May 2022 | | Vinyl AlbumBuck Owens And His Buckaroos - The Best Of Buck Owens Vol. 2 | Another request to please not add EMI as a second label to any EMI Group release where a label logo (Capitol in this case) is already present; the EMI logos in cases such as this (box logo on the front cover, the older record and globe logo on the back cover) just signify that the main label is part of the EMI group, and EMI as a label in its own right didn't come into being until mid-1973, with its own label design.
PhilMH SUBS 26th Apr 2022 | | CD AlbumThe Rolling Stones - The Rolling Stones | mrmole, could you give us a bit more information? For instance, are there any numbers on the inner rings of your disc, such as a catalogue number that is not quite the same as the number for the Rolling Stones disc? I suspect that the factory accidentally grabbed the tape for a similar (but different) catalogue number. And how many tracks are there? Anyway, as the disc emanated from PolyGram, I expect that the guitarist would be someone on PolyGram's roster, such as Pepe Romero or Paco de Lucia.
PhilMH SUBS 12th Apr 2022 | | Vinyl AlbumCrosby, Stills, Nash And Young - 4 Way Street | The 1971 date would have applied to the original Polydor release; Atlantic didn't move to Kinney until March 1972, and Kinney became WEA in about May that year, so this version is 1972 at the earliest.
PhilMH SUBS 3rd Apr 2022 | | Vinyl AlbumThe Hollies - Hollies' Greatest | Yes, Parlophone should be the label. The EMI logo is only used to indicate that the Parlophone label is part of the EMI group; EMI should only be used as a label if there is no other label logo present.
PhilMH SUBS 26th Mar 2022 | | Vinyl AlbumCreedence Clearwater Revival - Hey Tonight | Agreed, this must be 1980 at the earliest - an item in Record World dated August 9th, 1980 states "distribution of the Fantasy label switched from Bellaphon to Metronome on July 1".
PhilMH SUBS 26th Mar 2022 | | Vinyl AlbumThe Monkees - The Monkees Greatest Hits | Scrub that last comment - Discogs now has a black label version.
PhilMH SUBS 25th Mar 2022 | | Vinyl AlbumConnie Francis - Greatest Hits | Reviewed in Record Mirror 25 December 1971.
PhilMH SUBS 25th Mar 2022 | | Vinyl AlbumJackie Wilson - Nobody But You | Re the release date - there's an ad for the album in Record World of 19th February, Cashbox issues of 3rd & 12th March list it in their "Added to R & B playlists" page (though the issue for the 3rd only names the artist, not the title), and Billboard of 12th March has a review, so it looks like early-mid February 1977 is the actual release period.
PhilMH SUBS 23rd Mar 2022 | | Vinyl AlbumThe Monkees - The Monkees Greatest Hits | Ah, that label (I've never known what to call it - "floating A's"?), seems to have been introduced in the USA at the beginning of 1979, and in Australia in September 1979 (the 45cat listing for Iggy Pop's "I'm Bored" initially suggested June 1979, but that has the wrong image as the primary, the black label should be first), and looking at the Discogs Australian entries for this LP, I would think September 1976 is the correct original release date, but for the pale blue with white logo version, not the floating A's version, so I will go and correct that! There may not have been an Australian black label version, as a subsequent compilation, MONKEEMANIA, charted in the last week of October 1979, shortly after the label design changed.
PhilMH SUBS 23rd Mar 2022 | | Vinyl AlbumThe Monkees - The Monkees Greatest Hits | I don't "know" exactly, Jasper, but looking at the Aussie Arista 45's in 45cat, all the 1975 and 1976 releases were white labels with pale blue logos (i.e. the LP colours reversed), and appear to have switched to the black labels with pale blue logos at the beginning of 1977.
