Clearly Dutch songs (very patriotic) sung in Dutch with piano accompaniment. Sounds like an acoustic recording. Is this label perhaps related to the tiny Colibri pocket gramophone? (Belgian?) Trademark notice for the Colibri is however in German.
RobertG 15th Nov 2019		78 RPM Montreal Masonic Choir - The Old Woman / Border Ballad	Ah, that timeframe could be it - makes sense then also for the Canadian RCA sleeve found in the same lot, it looked 1940s in styling - probably originally with this record. Hm, also makes finding it in the North of The Netherlands perhaps a bit less strange. The North was liberated by Canadian forces in April/May '45. Thank you for that pointer!
RobertG 15th Nov 2019		78 RPM Montreal Masonic Choir - The Old Woman / Border Ballad	The record looks/feels late forties - fifties? But does still say VE, as if electric recording's still new. The number 757 suggests they made more of these private disks than I'd imagined - curious if it's datable. (I think lodge still extant, not sure about choir...) Oddly, this record was found not in Canada, but picked up in a thrift-store in rural Friesland, Netherlands.

Not sure how strict Beka kept to their block allocations? (E.g. strykorkest (archaic spelling) is correct Dutch for string orchestra.)

The labels and catalogue numbers and/or recordings are then for the Dutch market however. Only noted as 'Made in England'. Debatable how/where to file. Even without the expected prefix, to me this would look like very much a French release, rather than a British one.

Still same catalogue number, matrix and issue however. Not sure if warrants separate entry or merely as label variant. (Could argue that pre '31 there can't be Regal-Zonophone issues, only Regal or Zonophone :)

Nr. 2 - Alte Kameraden / Carmen-Marsch	According to CHARM, both sides recorded by the Kaiser Franz Grenadier Regiment Nr 2 in October of 1912. Labels are of later pressing, after 1918 when it had become the band of the Former Regiment. Small paper label states that 'this record is meant only for use in Germany'.

(Oo, watch the '56 Hauptmann von Köpenick for an impression of the Guard.) That video is indeed the merry coppersmith of this record. This Zonophone however does not contain the 'Grammophon Aufnahme' intro voice. Maybe that's the 1648x vs 1648h matrix.

RobertG 17th Sep 2015		78 RPM Enrico Caruso - La Donna E Mobile	Mysterious then! Indeed why did HMV add the sprinkling of different speeds to their catalogue? As they 'set the 78 standard', having 80 or 82 rpm in their catalogue would not reflect well I think on them - not good for perception of reliable quality from the 'original'. -Did they have access to notes or documents made during recordings that stated the machine was unfortunately running a bit fast that day? (True or not.) -Did they have a listening session and determined what the 'true' speed for best reproduction was? -Did they think it would look 'interesting' and make the catalogue seem more valuable? Mysterious... ( their reasons are likely lost in 'the mists of time' by now :)

RobertG 12th Sep 2015		78 RPM Enrico Caruso - Ideale	According to HMV catalogue, an 80 rpm recording. According to Victor ledgers (DAHR) this was recorded 30th of December 1906 in New York, so 1907 seems spot on :)
RobertG 12th Sep 2015		78 RPM Eddie South - Eddie's Blues / Sweet Georgia Brown	Searching the hive-mind that is the internet, found some more info. (The Pathe-Marconi terms helped there, thanks!) The Swing label was created in '37 by Charles Delaunay (Le Hot Club de France) with distribution from Gramophone-Pathé-Marconi. Published its first catalogue (leaflet really) in November '37, the first jazz label. (Delauney in '48 founded also the Vogue label, btway.) The matrix numbers could suggest that still the recording means of HMV were used. Till then the Swing artists had been recording on La Voix de son Maitre. The UK release of the SW.8 record as an HMV swing music series suggests a working relationship there.
