RogerFoster 10th Nov 2020 | | Vinyl AlbumMary Wells - Two Lovers The Golden Girl Of American Hits | This LP comprises of the two side ones of Mary's previous two US LPs, and uses the same cover-art as the second.
Tracks A1-A5 are side one of her "The One Who Really Loves You" LP, issued in The US on Motown 605.
Tracks B1-B5 are side one of her "Two Lovers" LP issued in The US on Motown 607.
The discography in Sharon Davis's book "Motown, The History" has it issued in July 1963.

RogerFoster 27th Oct 2020 | | CD AlbumVarious Artists - This Is Fame 1964-1968 | PhilMH … I suspect that Dr Doom pre-ordered these direct from Kent/Ace. I've done that a few times with their Motown releases and invariably the CDs have turned up a few days before the official release date.
It probably only works for UK addresses though. :)

It turns out that Track 1 is exactly the same recording released as a UK 45 on Jay Boy JBV 1 in 1977 as by Donnie Elbert …

RogerFoster 25th Oct 2020 | | CD AlbumVarious Artists - Richard Searling Presents 100% Casino | There are some interesting typographical features on this release.
The "Cecil Washington" at Track 2 is the artist usually described as "The Group Featuring Cecil Washington" and "The Proffessionals" at Track 4 are the Detroit outfit that usually appear as "The Professionals" (what the "f")!!
Then to top it all the tracklisting on the back of the booklet totally misses off track #20.

RogerFoster 24th Oct 2020 | | CD AlbumThe Parliaments - Testifyin | This is a reissue of GSCD 052 but with two extra tracks … #17 "Heart Trouble" and #18 "That Was My Girl". At the time of writing people on eBay and the likes are asking very silly money for it.

RogerFoster 19th Aug 2020 | | CD AlbumDiana Ross And The Supremes - Baby Love The Essential | Assuming that all the mixes are the same, this was reissued in 2020 as "The Essential Diana Ross & The Supremes" with a slight difference in the ordering of the tracks.
Track 2:15 "Everyday People" is really by the '70s Supremes and the Four Tops .. again assuming that it is the same track as on the reissue.
|
RogerFoster 19th Aug 2020 | | CD AlbumDiana Ross And The Supremes - Essential Diana Ross & The Supremes | This is "essentially" a reissue of a 2013 UK Compilation called "Baby Love - The Essential Diana Ross & The Supremes" with the ordering of the tracks being slightly changed, though possibly some mixes may differ - I don't have a copy of both CD sets to make a comparison.
It's a bit peeving that much is made about this being a "Diana Ross & The Supremes" compilation when Disc 3 is entirely comprised of tracks that were recorded after Miss Ross left the group. This Rosscentric view of the group also extends to the selection of LP Covers used as an illustration when the package is folded out.
It would have also made more sense to me if the third disc had used artwork from the 1970s US Motown label that the recordings actually appeared on, rather than artwork from an early '60s US Tamla label. Not entirely certain that all the tracks on here are truly "essential" but it is a good cross section of the group's recordings from 1962 right through to their break-up in 1977 and the sound quality is good.

RogerFoster 14th Aug 2020 | | CD AlbumThe Dells - They Said It Couldn't Be Done, But We Did It (Expanded Edition) | Added images #2365412 (CD Disc), #2365414 (Cartoon), #2365417(Credits) and #2365420(Discography).
The CD image captures the outer parts of the disc that are missing from Noel181's image #1881784. The cartoon is artwork used in the original LP release on US Mercury in 1977 and replicated in the CD Booklet. The credits and discography are also as appearing in the CD booklet.
The CD Booklet itself consists of 16 pages, including a history of the group by Rico "Superbizzee" Washington.

RogerFoster 12th Aug 2020 | | Vinyl AlbumThe Rascals - Freedom Suite | I've timed the tracks from this 2011 CD reissue and they come out as follows …
"America The Beautiful" - 2:51
"Me & My Friends" - 2:44
"Any Dance'll Do" - 2:22
"Look Around" - 3:03
"A Ray Of Hope" - 3:45
"Island Of Love" - 2:24
"Of Course" - 2:42
"Love Was So Easy To Give" - 2:44
"People Got To Be Free" - 3:01
"Baby I'm Blue" - 2:50
"Heaven" - 3:21
"Adrian's Birthday" - 4:50
"Boom" - 13:46
"Cute" - 15:17
The last three tracks are all instrumental. "Adrian's Birthday" is a groovy R&B/Jazz workout, "Boom" is an extended drum solo with more false endings than a soap opera storyline and "Cute" is a meandering Jazz/Rock jam typical of the era.

RogerFoster 11th Aug 2020 | | CD AlbumThe Young Rascals - Original Album Series | But Quad5point1 … That was their eye-catching stage costume of Knickers, Lord Fauntleroy shirts and peaked caps all of which added to the bright image they created with their music.
Or at least that's what the sleeve notes for their first LP say. :)
|
RogerFoster 10th Aug 2020 | | CD AlbumThe Young Rascals - Original Album Series | Added a full set of images.
The packaging is an outer "box" with five individual slipcases, that replicate the artwork of the original LPs. "Freedom Suite" was originally a Double LP, however both original discs appear on the one CD.

RogerFoster 5th Aug 2020 | | CD AlbumIsaac Hayes - Black Moses | Oops PhilMH … now corrected. The demons that inhabit my laptop have a habit of mixing up things I've copied and pasted and I really should have checked earlier.
Funnily, I've just been out to do a bit of shopping and in the store they were playing "Oops" (aka "Hit Em Up Style") by Blu Cantrell. Maybe the gods were trying to tell me something.

RogerFoster 5th Aug 2020 | | CD AlbumVarious Artists - Just A Little Overcome | And here was me thinking that I was no longer the only person here who has this CD.
Welcome to the weird and wonderful world of 45Worlds CD entry. :)

RogerFoster 5th Aug 2020 | | CD AlbumIsaac Hayes - Black Moses | You might be waiting a long time for any full set Mr Marmalade. I'd been holding off loading this for a while as I wasn't certain what it would be practical to take images of, a YouTube video of someone attempting to "solve the puzzle" might be more appropriate!!
In the meantime, those who are interested in seeing the full fold-out effect can see it at the linked entry for the original US release where Rustical did the honours (or should that be "honors") some time back.
It has occurred to me that a better packaging concept would have been to have a paper/card insert that mimicked the original fold-out sleeve for those who wanted to know what the 1971 LP looked like, with the whole thing (2 CDs, 1 booklet and fiddly insert) inside one of those "Clam Shell" covers so that nervous types (such as myself) could open it without worrying that the whole thing will fall apart.
It wouldn't surprise me if some Japanese issue has already done that.

RogerFoster 5th Aug 2020 | | CD AlbumIsaac Hayes - Black Moses | ReviewThose 45Worlders who have read previous reviews of mine may have seen the one I posted on this 2006 Supremes release where I suggested that it would be a candidate for the award for worst packaging of the year. This release would be top of my list for the 2009 award winner.
A few weeks back, in an attempt to dispel the lockdown blues, I decided to spruce up my collection of Isaac Hayes CDs. Having not previously owned a CD that had this 1971 masterpiece in its entirety I purchased this version. The package arrived and I started to remove the shrink-wrap so that I could play my new acquisition.
What happened next was something like what happened in that episode of "The Big Bang Theory" where Sheldon Cooper opens up a "boxed" Mr. Spock toy … the whole package seemed to disintegrate into a bewildering array of flaps and hidden compartments. It seems that this is how the original LP was packaged, with flaps opening out to form a cross shaped poster-sized image of Mr. Hayes!!
The booklet notes do point out that this is the first CD reissue to mimic the original packaging … maybe the producers of this reissue should have considered that there might have been a reason for this ... just because something might be appropriate for a 12" format doesn't mean that it should be miniaturised!!
For the next few minutes I gingerly tried to explore the various flaps and compartments to see if I could find the CDs and booklet. Eventually I succeeded but, not being a skilled surgeon, I did manage to slightly tear part of the package when attempting to prise one of the CDs out of its cubby-hole. Then, after finding everything and listening to it, there came the challenge of trying to put it all back together again … what goes where? …. which flap folds over which flap? … where is the front? … where is the back?
The whole thing reminds me of one of those "wooden-puzzles" that were all the rage in the '80s and '90s and I keep asking myself … Why? Why? Why? Why? Why? If this is the state that the music business sank to it's no surprise that Mr Hayes gave up his career to become a chef on "South Park" is it!!
The music, of course, is great for those (like me) who like plodding, orchestrated, well sung, early-'70s Soul … but then you knew that already didn't you.

|
RogerFoster 29th Jul 2020 | | CD AlbumIsaac Hayes - Joy | Amazon.co.uk have this released on 24th March 2006, though there is no indication of any release date in the packaging.
This is presumably a "Europeanised" version of an earlier US release, as the tracklisting in the insert shows "Printed in U.S.A." and the insert has a request for a free catalogue for Fantasy releases that can be sent to their address in Berkeley, California (I wonder if that works for addresses in The UK). The disc itself states that it is "made in the EU".
The CD has the label as Enterprise (as per the original US Vinyl release), the spine of the CD mentions Stax.

RogerFoster 3rd Jun 2020 | | CD AlbumMarvin Gaye - Marvin Gaye And His Girls | Discogs have this as a 1992 release, which fits in with other Motown CDs already here with similar Cat #s.
You'd have thought that Motown would have put the songwriter credits somewhere in this package, their absence makes it all look a bit cheap, nasty and "unofficial" to me. For those who are interested, from the original US 1969 vinyl release, the songwriters are …
"Once Upon A Time" - C. Paul, B. Ales, Wm. Stevenson, D. Hamilton
"What's The Matter With You Baby" - Wm. Stevenson, C. Paul, B. Ales
"It's Got To Be A Miracle (This Thing Called Love)" - S. Moy, V. Bullock, Wm. Stevenson
"It Takes Two" - Wm. Stevenson, S. Moy
"Your Precious Love" - V. Simpson, N. Ashford
"Good Lovin' Ain't Easy To Come By" - V. Simpson, N. Ashford
"Little Ole Girl, Little Ole Boy" - E. James, B. Benton, H. Fuqua
"I Can't Help But Love You" - R. Gordy, T. Kemp, M. Gaye
"What Good Am I Without You" - Wm. Stevenson, A. Higdon
"I Want You 'Round" - Wm. Robinson, Wm. Stevenson
"Deed I Do" - Rose, Hirsch
"Together" - B. De Sylva, L. Brown, R. Henderson

RogerFoster 3rd Jun 2020 | | CD AlbumVarious Artists - Soul Voices | ReviewOriginally scheduled for release on 24th April 2020, but postponed due to the Covid19 Pandemic, the innocuous title "Soul Voices" understates what this compilation really is, which as a collection of the type of recordings from the early and mid '60s that are commonly described as "Beat Ballads", "Big City Ballads" or, in "Northern Soul" circles, "Enders" (due to the fact that they are commonly played at "Northern Soul" venues to wind-down at the end of a session).
For those who don't know "Beat Ballads" were a variety of Soul Music, usually sung by men with "big" voices, that featured pounding (just below mid-tempo) beats, impassioned vocals, girlie-choruses and heart-rending lyrics. The height of the genre was during the 1962-66 period with well known, and commercially successful, examples including such records as "Any Day Now" by Chuck Jackson, "Stand By Me" by Ben E. King and "What Becomes Of The Brokenhearted" by Jimmy Ruffin. Sometimes the girls and/or pop singers also got in on the act with songs such as "Walk On By" by Dionne Warwick or "I'm Gonna Be Strong" by Gene Pitney fitting the description nicely.
Needless to say none of the previously mentioned tunes are included and all of the "Beat Ballads" on here are sung by, usually "big-voiced", males. Some names are well known to '60s Soul fans (Ben E. King, Walter Jackson, Jimmy Radcliffe, Chuck Jackson for example), some are more obscure (Gene Burks, Clarence Pinckney), most tracks were originally released as singles in The US in the '60s, though 8 of them have only recently emerged from the vaults, including a rather splendid version of Dionne Warwick's "Don't Make Me Over" by Tommy Hunt.
Here is a selection of what you can expect on this CD ….

RogerFoster 6th May 2020 | | Vinyl AlbumThe Dells - Freedom Means | Having just purchased the 2015 Caroline International CD Reissue of this the mystery of the final track on Side 2 is finally solved!!
The LP track-listing has it as a 20 second long song called "Freedom Theme", but there is no such track on the LP. This has bugged me for years, but the notes for the CD Reissue state that on the original US version of this LP there was such a track, but it just consisted of 20 seconds of silence. Obviously this was too philosophical for the folks at the UK record company and they mistook "20 seconds of silence" for "nothing" (I wonder how they cope with Remembrance Sunday and the like).
I remember, almost 50 years back when I bought this, that there had recently been a court case over Sly Stone's "There's A Riot Going On" LP, where the UK issue (which in typical British style failed to state any timings) had "There's A Riot Going On" listed as the last track on Side 1 but there was no such track on the vinyl.
The US Release of "There's A Riot Going On" had the last track on side one timed at zero seconds … I wonder if it is too late for me to sue over the omission of "Freedom Theme" on this??

RogerFoster 19th Apr 2020 | | CD AlbumDiana Ross And Marvin Gaye - Diana & Marvin | This has exactly the same Cat# and barcode as the Canadian Release entered here some time back.
There is a school of thought prevalent amongst many who hang around here that the same Barcode and Cat# equals the same release and therefore we should ditch the idea that this is a "US" or "Canadian" release and make it "International" (or "European" if the countries involved are certain territories in Europe).
However … the CD disc for the Canadian version has text around the rim that clearly states that it is "Manufactured and Distributed in Canada" … no similar text occurs on this US release. Also, although the image of the back-cover for the Canadian issue is none too clear I can see that at the bottom it has text that differs from the blurb on this version which quotes the Motown/Universal address at 1755 Broadway, New York, rather than what appears to be Canada specific information on the Canadian release.
Consequently I think that the two releases are different.
Discuss.

RogerFoster 15th Apr 2020 | | CD AlbumVarious Artists - The Real Thing – The Songs Of Ashford, Simpson And Armstead | Added images of the Disc, the back of the 16 page CD booklet, the CD Tray and the back of package.
The CD Booklet is typically Kent/Ace in its format, in that it starts off with brief biographies of the song-writing trio Nickolas Ashford, Valerie Simpson and Josephine Armstead before launching into a 10 page track by track essay by Mick Patrick that is generously interspersed with various label scans and trade paper adverts & reviews.
The final track is reputedly an instrumental version of an obscure 1966 solo single by Nickolas Ashford called "I Don't Need No Doctor", but everytime I hear it I can't help but think it sounds more like Tommy Tucker's 1964 hit "Hi-Heel Sneakers".
