Twitster 10th Dec 2014 | | 78 RPMFrank Sinatra - The Coffee Song (They've Got An Awful Lot Of Coffee In Brazil) / The Things We Did Last Summer | As issued the "A" side was actually "The Things We Did Last Summer", as confirmed on the Sinatra family site. However, "The Coffee Song" was the bigger hit of the two, reaching #6. "The Things We Did Last Summer" topped at #8.
Shelley Fabares would revive "The Things We Did Last Summer" in 1962, but it failed to break into the Top 40.

Twitster 8th Dec 2014 | | 78 RPMJohnny Mercer And The Pied Pipers - Ac-cent-tchu-ate The Positive / There's A Fellow Waiting In Poughkeepsie | Side A and B: From the Paramount Picture "Here Come The Waves". Both artists accompanied by Paul Weston And His Orchestra.
In the film, released in 1944, "Ac-cent-tchu-ate The Positive" is performed by Bing Crosby and Sonny Tufts, both of whom are inexplicably in "black face". Certainly not one of Bing's stellar performances and probably why one doesn't see the movie on the Turner Classic Movies channel.

Twitster 4th Dec 2014 | | 78 RPMThe King Cole Trio - I Realize Now / Gee Baby Ain't I Good To You | The Three Suns trio consisted of brothers Al and Morty Nevins (guitar and accordion, respectively), along with their cousin Artie Dunn (vocals, organ).
Also of note, Al Nevins co-founded Aldon Music Publishing Company with Don Kirshner, which was to play a very influential role in the pop music field with what was eventually to become known as "The Brill Building Sound." Additionally, Nevins was a highly successful producer at RCA.
A gifted composer in his own right, Morty Nevins penned their first mega-hit "Twilight Time".
Al died in 1965 at the age of 48 as a result of heart disease.
Morty followed in 1990 at 73 after a brief bout with cancer.
Artie passed in 1996, also 73, from unknown causes.
The Three Suns were touted as First Lady Mamie Eisenhower's favorite recording group. (Obviously, Elvis Presley was never in contention for that vaunted position.)

Twitster 29th Nov 2014 | | 78 RPMGlenn Miller - I Can't Give You Anything But Love Baby / Little Brown Jug | Side A:
Miller was promoted to Major while stationed in Bedford, England on August 17, 1944. The unit was then known as The American Band Of The Allied Expeditionary Forces (AEF).
The two titles listed here were taken from separate "I Sustain The Wings" broadcasts while the unit was still in the States and Miller was a Captain. Of course, his unit at the time of these broadcasts was known as The Army Air Forces Training Command Orchestra
"I Can't Give You Anything But Love Baby" was taken from the May 13, 1944 6:00 to 6:30 p. m. NBC broadcast, while "Little Brown Jug" was the "borrowed" tune in the Something Old, New, Borrowed and Blue medley of the May 27, 1944 6:00 to 6:30 p. m. NBC broadcast (both programs were repeated live for the West Coast between 11 to 11:30 p.m.). Both broadcasts were staged at the Vanderbilt Theatre in New York City. (Note: Miller was on leave during the timeframe of these programs. Sgt. Jerry Gray conducted in his stead.)
As this issue was not released until August, 1945 (eight months following Miller's disappearance and presumed death), the title of Major is correct as listed on the label..

Bob Carroll (real name: Marcus B. Kaufman) had been assigned as a vocalist to the Miller organization, and served with the unit from February 3, 1944 until sometime between April 23 and May 8, 1944. Up to the time of his transfer, Carroll had been assigned to the military band unit of M/Sgt Harry Bluestone in Fort Worth, Texas. It was to this band Carroll was to return upon his later transfer from the Miller organization.
Bluestone and his unit, upon the transfer of Miller and his band to the European Theater of Operations in mid-June 1944, was tapped to take over responsibilities of the Training Command Orchestra to include the weekly "I Sustain The Wings" NBC radio broadcasts. It is this orchestra with whom Carroll is performing on this recording.
