fantasista 4th May 2024		78 RPM Robert - Swinging On A Star / The Older You Grow (1944)	Unfortunately it's a bit like trying to listen to music while hail is pounding on the windows, seven pounds of bacon are frying on the stove and the first world war is raging right outside the window, but this is indeed a really good performance. "Robert" could've been making records, and not just sizzly lacquer ones.

I use GIMP normally, I'll try using the sharpen feature the next time I have one like this to upload and see if it helps in the same way. For the record, this label was already badly faded, so to bring out the writing even as much as I did, in GIMP I went to Colours>Hue & Saturation and increased the saturation of the yellow a bit and increased the lightness, and decreased the lightness of the green a bit; trying to find a balance between legibility and a natural appearance.

It sometimes takes time, but every correction submitted eventually gets done.
fantasista 13th Apr 2024		78 RPM Degli Arditi Orchestra - Tea Party Waltzer / Diamond Waltzer (1921)	"Degli Arditi Orchestra" is, I think, an ungrammatical or perhaps archaic or dialectical way of writing the band name. "Orchestra" is the head noun and "degli Arditi" ("of the Arditi," plural) modifies it, so "Orchestra" should be before "degli Arditi." It could be that the name of the band was written the same way in a recording ledger and it was just copied that way on the label. If the intended meaning was "by the Arditi Orchestra" it would say "dell'Arditi Orchestra," "dell'" being singular. Here's another of their discs where the band name is written correctly. While on the subject, "Arditi" was the name given to the Italian trench raiders in WWI - given that this band was performing in 1921-22, it might be fair to assume that they borrowed their name from the aforementioned units.

B-side lyrics (source): [Verse 1] The nation is sad as can be, A message came over the sea, A thousand or more, who sailed from our shore, Have gone to eternity. The Statue of Liberty high, Must now have a tear in her eye, I think it's a shame, Some one is to blame, But all we can do is just sigh! [Chorus] Some of us lost a true sweetheart, Some of us lost a dear dad, Some lost their mothers, sisters and brothers, Some lost the best friends they had. fantasista 31st Oct 2023		78 RPM Rosa Ponselle - Giovanni Martinelli (1928)	There are users who use the function properly and cite actual sale prices, and that I can support, but it'd be nice if user bestdealonreallyoldrecords could be prevented from doing this kind of thing to boost the supposed dollar value of his own records. Discogs seller BARRYS-BARGAIN-BIN is already dreaming of flipping this OLD (@100 YEARS) 78 RPM SHELLAC 12" in VG condition for $66, a great BARGAIN compared to $10k. While Pinza, Ponselle and Martinelli sound magnificent here, and the comments on the linked videos indicate that opera fans like the recording, this is not a rare record; and in 1928 one could have probably had the artists and the entire Metropolitan Opera chorus and orchestra perform the songs live in one's own home for less than the record's alleged value :)

I wonder if it would be possible to prevent new users from adding valuations until they've contributed a certain amount, since most of these fantasy prices seem to come from new accounts.

L'alma voce della Patria non lontana le rispose: "libertà!" Le ragazze di Trieste cantan tutte con ardore: "Madre Italia prepararci dal tuo cuore, niun tiranno più saprà!" [...?] baci, fiori e canti alla marina, la campana più non ha la nota mesta. Su San Giusto sventolar si vede a festa il vessillo tricolor. Le ragazze di Trieste cantan tutte con ardore: "O Italia, o Italia del mio cuore, [.....?]" Finalmente anche Fiume è italiana, sui confini già [...?] [........?] Ora brilla [...?] Le ragazze del Quarnàro cantan tutte con ardore: "O Italia, o Italia del mio cuore, sei venuta a liberar!"

Barr: "...the first items appearing in the Canadian Columbia catalogue not in either of the parent catalogues were a direct result of Canada entering World War I long before the U.S. This was the "Patriotic" series, bearing an ornamental red/white/blue label and numbers in a "P" series. The material, of course, was all war songs, varying from marches to more plebeian fare, and all that I have seen were recorded either in London or New York. The English sides may well have appeared also on U.K. Columbia, while the American sides seldom if ever appeared in their home country. Some thirty odd records appeared in this series, which inspired Berliner to deck some of his patriotic material in a similar label."

fantasista 1st Oct 2023		78 RPM Carl Frischer - Amerikanische Betrachtungen / Wie Man Englisch Lernt (1928)	An excerpt from an academic article that mentions the B-side: "...translating idiomatic expressions from one language to another could be a formidable task, often generating unwanted results. The 1915 recording "Wie Man Englisch Lernt," by Carl Frischer on Columbia [E]2797 plays on these difficulties. Carl Frischer informs his audience that his Irish girlfriend has betrayed him and now he has decided to share with us the letter in English he has written ending their relationship. His literal translations of German idioms into English create linguistic havoc resulting in a very poorly constructed letter in English and a very funny skit. Excerpt: "Mein liebes, süsses Zuckerherz, my dear little sweet sugar heart .... seitdem ich mich mit Dir verbunden habe ... (wissen Sie, es ist nicht so leicht, vom Deutschen ins Englische zu übersetzen, because the American can [question the houses?] which is the German) .... seitdem ich mich mit Dir verbunden habe .... since I farknipft myself with you hab ich 'rausgefunden have I found it out dass Du mich hintergehst that you go behind me hinterum und so habe ich den Entschluss gefasst and so I catched the resolution dass ich Dir nicht mehr den Hof machen will but now I don't like to make you any more the yard.
