Juke Jules SUBS 23rd Sep 2013 | | 78 RPMHarry James - I Had The Craziest Dream / A Poem Set To Music (1942) | Don't worry, it's done now!
Anyone is welcome to make a correction if you spot anything you think should be changed

Juke Jules SUBS 6th Sep 2013 | | 78 RPMChoral À Coeur Joie - Marjolaine Strasbourg | The kaleidoscope device is shown on the sleeve and seems to be a series of 16 mirrors. It must show a moving image of the egg hatching or the train approaching, much like an 'animated gif'

Juke Jules SUBS 18th Aug 2013 | | 78 RPMBenny Goodman - The 1943 Super Rhythm-Style Series, No. 67 & 68 (1943) | [YouTube Video]
Goodman and Peggy re-recorded this in 1947, released in the USA on USA Capitol 511, and Peggy Lee recorded the song again in 1947 with Dave Barbour And His Orchestra for release on USA Capitol 15118
For more about the song, see the Lil Green recording on B-8714

Juke Jules SUBS 13th Aug 2013 | | 78 RPMJohn Barbirolli - Berceuse / Præludium (1934) | Barbirolli is so universally known as Sir John since he was honoured in 1949, so it is unexpected to see him credited as just 'john'
|
Juke Jules SUBS 7th Aug 2013 | | 78 RPMDame Clara Butt - Abide With Me / God Shall Wipe Away All Tears (1924) | No, Zab, but she was popularly known as 'the Big Bristol Lass'
|
Juke Jules SUBS 7th Aug 2013 | | 78 RPMClara And Bertie - A Merry Christmas from Clara And Bertie (1909) | Many thanks for the fascinating fluffontheneedle link. From that we see that the matrix number for this was 3793f
Note also the reference to the label colour being reserved for Clara Butt issues
BTW, I see that the reference to Buster's big10inchrecord blog is not related to this particular record

Juke Jules SUBS 7th Aug 2013 | | 78 RPMClara And Bertie - A Merry Christmas from Clara And Bertie (1909) | This would have made a very recherché Christmas present for friends of Clara Butt and Bertie Rumford!

Juke Jules SUBS 4th Jul 2013 | | 78 RPMThe International Staff Band Chorus And Brass Ensemble - The World For God / Mercy's Light (1957) | Don't listen to him, Greg ;-) Records with a religious message are rather out of fashion in the 21st Century, so all the more reason to get them listed here

Juke Jules SUBS 18th Jun 2013 | | 78 RPMEddie Smith And The Super Chiefs - Preacher And The Bear / Snow Dear (1953) | Although Vogue credited Smith with the composition of (The) Preacher And The Bear, it had been a long-standing gramophone success for many artists. Written in 1904 by music publisher Arthur Longbrake under the pseudonym Joe Arzonia, it was recorded many times by Arthur Collins and released on cylinder and disc by many labels, starting probably with a Victor release in 1905. The novelty song was the best selling gramophone record for many years and Collins sold in the millions over 20 years, including at least one UK release by The Gramophone Company which was accompanied by an explanatory leaflet of the 'blackface' dialect .
This video is of a 1912 cylinder recording, giving a long track time of 4:45 minutes, and the accompanying notes give a detailed biography of Arthur Collins

It's good to see your contributions from your interesting collection, and it would be nice if you could improve your images by using some suitable image editing software. See "Guide" above, and Submitting Images to 78 RPM World

Juke Jules SUBS 12th Jun 2013 | | 78 RPMLouis Bellson - For Europeans Only / Caxton Hall Swing (1958) | Seeing this label, it seems reasonable to assume that Columbia had a 'Louis Bellson' Series, but what about LB 150 by Oscar Peterson?
Unfortunately I don't have a label image for this entry, I just saw it advertised on the rear of a Columbia sleeve, but I presume the LB series was used for the Clef Series

Juke Jules SUBS 9th Jun 2013 | | 78 RPMBourneville Pensioners' Male Voice Choir - ? | Are we sure this is a 78? The image shows "Speed 78" crossed out, and the stroboscope surround has as many markings as this 45

Juke Jules SUBS 3rd Jun 2013 | | 78 RPMPercival Mackey's Band - Maggie McGhee / The Toy Drum Major (1925) | On Toy Drum Major the vocalist is Harry Fay
The recording level is very low on this record, and I'm not sure if this was electrically recorded
I'll upload to YT in a few days

Juke Jules SUBS 2nd Jun 2013 | | 78 RPMNew Light Symphony Orchestra - Barcarolle (1926) | The HMV I just added B 2361 has labels of 3 3/8 and 2 7/8 but I feel sure that is due to the use of earlier labels for the side which has the earlier matrix number. This would be necessary as they seem to re-use the earlier pressing matrix which of course has a smaller run-out diameter and has noticably lower quality audio at a lower level
Incidentally, the 4-272 side is marginally longer at 3:10 vs. 3:00
|
Juke Jules SUBS 2nd Jun 2013 | | 78 RPMSousa's Band - The Sesqui-Centennial Exposition / Under The Double Eagle (1927) | I have assumed this was released in 1926 by comparison with other submitted B-series HMVs
I also assumed that SCE was the intended first side because the much-earlier matrix No. and smaller label for UTDE point to an earlier release, probably as a first side with a different coupling

Juke Jules SUBS 30th May 2013 | | 78 RPMPercival Mackey's Band - Maggie McGhee / The Toy Drum Major (1925) | Thanks MR, I had heard comments about the Rust discographies being now out of print and currently fetching 'collector' prices, but it's worth checking for 2nd hand copies. Good idea re the public library, will check - I'd almost forgotten where ours is ;-)

Juke Jules SUBS 28th May 2013 | | 78 RPMPercival Mackey's Band - Maggie McGhee / The Toy Drum Major (1925) | Well, I know even less ;-)
I'm new to the delightful world of Dance-band 78s so my only resouce has been the 'web, but I have a small and growing list of most of the dance-band orchestras. YT is one of the best resources, but it's unfortunate that so many uploaders do not give label details (thank you Adradna!)
Wikipedia does not go into much detail re Mackey (and until yesterday's emendation did not even mention that he worked with Bowlly), but the page linked from there gives a few dates

Juke Jules SUBS 27th May 2013 | | 78 RPMPercival Mackey's Band - Maggie McGhee / The Toy Drum Major (1925) | Thanks. Many mentions of MacKey relate to his work with Al Bowlly in 1929, but I see he was recording with his Kit Cat Band from 1926

Juke Jules SUBS 27th May 2013 | | 78 RPMPercival Mackey's Band - Maggie McGhee / The Toy Drum Major (1925) | Year must be before 1930, probably 1929

Further, you can hear the Fred Elizalde's band version on redhotjazz.com

Juke Jules SUBS 1st May 2013 | | 78 RPMTeresa Brewer - Ol' Man Mose / I Beeped When I Shoulda Bopped (1950) | George - Inevitably it would be released a bit later in the UK than in the USA
The June 1950 date for the UK agrees with David M. McKee's authoritative book The London American Legend
