liskeard78s 21st Dec 2024 | | 78 RPMStanley Holloway - Gunner Joe / Runcorn Ferry (1934) | The sound quality in the available (tape recorder) video is poor. Heavily compressed. But there are some good (remastered) recordings available on YouTube. For example :
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wI1pf7bJSnM
That other old story (in similar vein, haggling for a bargain) "Three Ha'pence A Foot", 1932, can be found on YouTube direct from 78 r.p.m.

liskeard78s 12th Dec 2024 | | 78 RPMStuart Ross And Joe Sargent - Never Swat A Fly / Go Home And Tell Your Mother (1931) | 1930 ! Not 1931 ! Please correct the date.
According to the late Eddie Shaw's D.A.T.E.S. numbers up to R.874 were issued in 1930. As you may discover, both sides must have been recorded in 1930 (which is possibly the more relevant).

liskeard78s 12th Dec 2024 | | 78 RPMLeslie Hutchinson - I'm Yours / I'll Be Good Because Of You (1931) | 1930 ! Not 1931 ! Please correct the date.

liskeard78s 12th Dec 2024 | | 78 RPMThe Three Boswell Sisters - Heebie Jeebies / Choo Choo (1938) | I very much doubt the date "1937" Please see the G.B. Parlophone issue which dates from 1930 ! Not 1937 ! Please correct the date.
As you can see already stated, both sides recorded in 1930 (which is possibly the more relevant).

liskeard78s 12th Dec 2024 | | 78 RPMThe Three Boswell Sisters - New Rhythm Style Series No. 53 & 54 (1930) | 1930 ! Not 1931 !
Please correct the date.

liskeard78s 12th Dec 2024 | | 78 RPMRoberto Inglez - Bruca Manigua / Something In The Wind (1947) | Please correct the date on this one and the one next to it in the list.
1947 ! Not 1931 !
liskeard78s 2nd Sep 2024 | | 78 RPMThe Beatles - From Me To You / Thank You Girl (1963) | Moderator - you may as well delete those others (or lose them somewhere). I was prompted to provide an Indian label of this disc. Found it (hiding in my external drive after all).
liskeard78s 2nd Nov 2023 | | 78 RPMKitty, Daisy And Lewis - Hillbilly Music / Mohair Sam (2008) | @ JLC135 - Well done, thanks!
(I found the L.P. somewhere on the web and those were the two other tracks!)
It would be handy if there were links to their other two albums of 78s...
liskeard78s 2nd Nov 2023 | | 78 RPMKitty, Daisy And Lewis - Hillbilly Music / Mohair Sam (2008) | Right, that's four of them. What's the fifth?
(I have the album but still sealed, I don't want to unwrap it.)
liskeard78s 21st Aug 2023 | | 78 RPMAnnette Hanshaw - (I'm A Dreamer) Aren't We All? / If I Had A Talking Picture Of You (1930) | Pity about the absence of the other label. It so happens the label of the same title is missing from the 'Linked Release' (on Publix) so I can't determine the matrix no. (which is the same on both).
liskeard78s 20th Aug 2023 | | 78 RPMAnnette Hanshaw - (I'm A Dreamer) Aren't We All? / If I Had A Talking Picture Of You (1930) | Shame about the label image(s). Oh well, better than nothing.
It would appear then, that one side of 2000-P was re-issued on 2007-P. (cf. https://www.45worlds.com/78rpm/record/2007p - also linked below as 'Next by Artist'.)
liskeard78s 20th Aug 2023 | | 78 RPMAnnette Hanshaw - I'm A Dreamer (1930) | Shame about the missing label of the Annette Hanshaw side.
2007-P is half a re-issue of 2000-P. (cf. https://www.45worlds.com/78rpm/record/2000p - also linked below as 'Previous by Artist'.)
liskeard78s 18th Aug 2023 | | 78 RPMFrank Ferera Trio - Maui Chimes / Sonny Boy (1929) | Could that Vocal Refrain perchance be by Annette Hanshaw?
(I'll check out the matrix nos. with the same two titles on other American labels.)
Definitely she recorded with Ferera - I have one on U.K. Regal - "Pagan Love Song".
liskeard78s 18th Aug 2023 | | 78 RPMAnnette Hanshaw - I'm Following You! / Happy Days Are Here Again (1930) | Sorry only the one label. (Pinched from the YouTube video. Better than a blank perhaps?)
liskeard78s 18th Aug 2023 | | 78 RPMAnnette Hanshaw - I Can't Give You Anything But Love / I Must Have That Man (1928) | Sorry, only a B-side label. (Pinched from the YouTube video. Better than a blank, I decided.)
liskeard78s 18th Aug 2023 | | 78 RPMPatsy Young - He's So Unusual / I Think You'll Like It (1929) | Sorry the labels don't match but I decided it better than a blank space.
(Please, if you will, move to a 'Linked release'. But I only have the one label, pinched from the YouTube video of course.)
liskeard78s 15th Aug 2023 | | 78 RPMChubby Checker - Fishin' / The Jet (1961) | Videos much appreciated! Helps to decide whether to buy or not!
liskeard78s 15th Aug 2023 | | 78 RPMThe Three Professors - Yew Stept Owt Offa Dreme (You Stepped Out Of A Dream) / Vulgar Boatman Rock (1956) | Question is - who were they? (Could this be Russ Conway's sense of humour?)
liskeard78s 13th Aug 2023 | | 78 RPMKitty, Daisy And Lewis - Messing With My Life / Coco Nuts (2011) | Good old Mark Radcliffe for bringing these to my attention back in the day! Wonderful.
I'm now proud to have all three albums. Can anyone tell me if they are mono or stereo?
liskeard78s 13th Aug 2023 | | 78 RPMKitty, Daisy And Lewis - Going Up The Country / The Buggin' Blues (2008) | I now have all three albums of 78s. Question is, are they all mono or stereo? (Some tracks seem to need an LP stylus to track properly; others obviously play well with the 78 stylus which is thicker. The grooves look very fine unlike the old 78s.)
liskeard78s 13th Aug 2023 | | 78 RPMBrenda Lee - Bigelow 6-200 / Jambalaya (1956) | 1956 - are you sure? - that could be the recording date but 70.185 and 70.186 are both 1960.
(I have both on Brasilian 78s, both vinyl.)
liskeard78s 11th Aug 2023 | | 78 RPMAnthony Newley - Idle On Parade / Idle Rock-A-Boogie (1959) | What! No labels? - I have this 78 (but unfortunately misprinted with the same label on both sides!) I have "Idle On Parade (from the soundtrack of the film)" CP.2066 (on both labels). The other side is CP.2065. Wonder which is which? Not played it yet. Was "Idle Rock-A-Boogie" actually the A-side? Who knows? (And who cares.) I shall have to consult ww.45cat for F.11137.
liskeard78s 30th Jul 2023 | | 78 RPMThe Shepherd Sisters - Alone (Why Must I Be Alone) / Congratulations To Someone (1957) | Lovely record. Did the girls all play triangles? Wonderful!
liskeard78s 27th Jul 2023 | | 78 RPMElvis Presley With The Jordanaires - Baby I Don't Care / Young And Beautiful (1957) | I have this 78. You say '1957' but the J matrix code = 1958, this issue at least.
(In case anyone wonders, D4,D5,D6 = 1944,45,46, &c.;
E2,E3,E4,F2 = 1952,53,54,55;
G=56, H=57, J=58, K=59, L=60, M=61, N=62, P=63, R=64, S=65, T=66,
and so on up to 1972 when they got bored with it..
Found this info in "Vinyl Dave's Book of Favourite Record Labels" - I can confirm those numbers. (Sometimes an old recording can have a later matrix code, e.g. especially with regard to Jim Reeves, as each disc has its own matrix no.)
liskeard78s 27th Jul 2023 | | 78 RPMDuane Eddy - The Lonely One / Detour (1959) | I have this 78 - a Canadian pressing, not U.S.A., surely? (Bought from the same lot as 2 other Canadian 78s - the pressings and labels look very similar. Admittedly, the others have 'Canada' on the labels.)
liskeard78s 23rd Jul 2023 | | 78 RPMThe Beatles - Hey Jude / Revolution (1968) | Thomas Edison - yes it was he! - made a short (experimental) series of long playing 78s in 1926. You had to buy a new record player to play them! - I now have four of the damn things - two 10'' ones play for 12 mins. per side (as stated on the labels) and the two 12" ones are supposed to play for 20 !! mins. per side. Haven't yet managed to check one. Fine grooves??? > Now, just take any modern 33 rpm LP and play it at 78. See if you can find one that plays for 20 mins.!!!!!
liskeard78s 18th Jul 2023 | | 78 RPMJohnny Cash - Don't Take Your Guns To Town / I Still Miss Someone (1959) | PB 897 January 1959? - But PB 891 is dated February (and has 1959 on both its labels).
liskeard78s 15th Jul 2023 | | 78 RPMElvis Presley - Baby Let's Play House / I'm Left, You're Right, She's Gone | I would like to know when these were issued on 78 in clear vinyl. Anyone know?
liskeard78s 9th Jul 2023 | | 78 RPMTiny Tim - There'll Always Be An England / Bless 'em All (1969) | Some copies of this 78 had a plain Reprise label.
liskeard78s 9th Mar 2023 | | 78 RPMRuth Etting - Take My Heart | This appears to be a duplicate listing. (Maybe two different 'takes' of the same song. If so, maybe the two should be linked.)
Re. the note about re-issue, this was usually how the company got noise-free recordings for transcription to L.P. back then.
