If anyone wants to insert it into here (I don't know how) - it's
A: MACACO QUER BANANA - Marcha (Haroldo Lobo - David Nasser) 9160, and
B: P'RA QUE SOFRER - Samba (Francisco Alves - Jose Roy) 9161.
I can supply scans of labels... Someone please let me know when there's a place for them.

I have one on Capitol (but it still has its original 1949 cat. no., evidently still being pressed on 78 at that time : Jo Stafford & Gordon MacRae's ''Whispering Hope'' - which was a small hit for Jim Reeves in March 1961! And one on H.M.V. made in Britain but only for export, by Vicky et l'Orchestre O.K. Jazz in the LON series.)

liskeard78s 27th Jan 2023 | | 78 RPMThe Beatles - We Can Work It Out / Day Tripper (1965) | 2 copies of R 5389 (both apparently in nice condition) sold on Ebay in January 2021. £1,880 and £1,255. I have noted eight other Beatles Indian 78s that definitely sold between Jan.21 and Dec.22 - the top price being the £1,880 already mentioned. DPE 172 (£1,601), 186 (£1,600), R.4983 (£1,290), 5200 (£821), 5305 (£1,254) and another 5389 (£822). The others were DPE.159 and 164, approx. £700 each, both in very-good / very-good-plus condition (I was the buyer of both). I don't know what condition the others were in. The Indian Ebayer offering Beatles 78s at prices around £6,000 is a comedian. Or he has no real understanding of GBP. (Seriously - Pat Boone's ''Speedy Gonzales'' at £427 ???!!! It's been waiting a ridiculously long time for a buyer.)

liskeard78s 27th Jan 2023 | | 78 RPMRon Goodwin - Theme From "The Early Bird" / Theme From "The Alphabet Murders" (1966) | This, soon after R.5389 ''Day Tripper'' / ''We Can Work It Out'' - here we have a strong hint that nothing later of the Beatles exists on 78. I read that someone said ''Yellow Submarine'' (R.5493, mid-1966) exists on 78 but I'll not believe it until I see the label of one. All that speculation that ''Hey Jude''' exists on 78 is surely dreamland. (That white label acetate seen recently on Ebay has to be a fake. Or a joke at least. Anyone could have made that any time later.)

liskeard78s 29th Dec 2022 | | 78 RPMThe Shadows - Round And Round / Les Girls | No date? . . . "1963" according to same number @ 45cat.
The title track of the 1962 E.P. "The Boys" appears on the Shadows' Greatest Hits, between "Guitar Tango" and "Dance On" (both 1962). (E.P. also contains "The Girls").

liskeard78s 26th Dec 2022 | | 78 RPMThe Beatles - Ticket To Ride / Yes It Is (1965) | @ 78rpm-maniac - I think it was ''Catch Us If You Can''. (Indians loved their cinema!)
(In the summer of 1977 Vintage Record Centre in London was offering Beatles 78s at £100 each. I went there but they were all gone.)
I'm avidly (or ''obsessively'', says my wife) searching for late 78s and I can definitely state ''Hey Jude'' doesn't exist - (ridiculous idea, since there is also no sign of anything from two years earlier, though I did once read that ''Yellow Submarine'' was on 78 - I still doubt it. People's memories are not so reliable. No sign of anything from Sgt. Pepper or Magical Mystery Tour and no certainty about ''Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da'' so, ''Hey Jude''? I think that 12'' white label acetate was absolutely a fake. Anyone with the relevant equipment could have made that any time. Or pasted typed labels onto anything.)
Best, latest, I've found so far is Desmond Dekker, 1967. African I think.
(I have seven Kitty, Daisy & Lewis 78s to add (plus possibly three more if they're not already in). Someone please send me instructions?)

I now have all three albums of K. D. & L. Question is, are they Mono or Stereo? And yes, they seem to be microgroove (LP) but some tracks play fine with a 78 stylus. Some of the high frequencies (esses) sound distorted with the 78 stylus but the LP stylus (if I'm not mistaken) can't cope with the powerful bass groove. (I forget which is which.)

liskeard78s 30th Jun 2021 | | 78 RPMThe Beatles - From Me To You / I Saw Her Standing There (1963) | Hello Jock Girl - f.y.i...
GEP 8880 was The Beatles' Hits E.P. :
From Me To You / Thank You Girl / Please Please Me / Love Me Do (2nd version)
GEP 8883 was The Beatles No.1 E.P. :
I Saw Her Standing There / Misery / Anna (Go To Him) / Chains
So perhaps ''From Me To You'' was the B-side of this disc?
* [see added comment above] . . . Interestingly ''From Me To You'' does not appear to exist on Indian 78. I have seen 7 different examples of ''Love Me Do'' (which wasn't issued until 1964, according to the labels), 5 copies of ''Please Please Me'' and 5 each of ''She Loves You'' and ''I Want To Hold Your Hand''. Only 3 of ''Can't Buy Me Love'' so far ... but if ''From Me To You'' existed, surely at least one would have turned up...
B.t.w. the Indian 78 of ''I Saw Her Standing There'' has ''Hold Me Tight'' on the flip side,
the South American ones have ''Twist And Shout'' on one and ''Don't Bother Me'' on the other, while in the Philippines the flip side was ''Boys''... (Tut - all those non-Lennon-McCartney songs! But did they care about that...)
Looking at the Philippines 78 of ''From Me To You'', are you sure that ''Thank You Girl'' was on the flip? No picture... Although the cat.no. R 5015 is there hiding on the label so maybe it was. (Picture please, anyone?)

liskeard78s 30th Jun 2021 | | 78 RPMThe Beatles - Hey Jude / Revolution (1968) | Me again - I just want to add that since I wrote that (below) I have found several 78s later than 1965. Jim Reeves (dated 1966), Desmond Dekker (!!) 1967, and Willie Mitchell 1968. Not to mention Tiny Tim 1969 but that isn't the real article (i.e. a gimmick, not a regular release in a foreign country).
So where are all those Beatles 78s made since ''Michelle''??? There have been 4 *different* copies of ''Day Tripper''/''We Can Work It Out'' discovered and photographed, 2 in here and 2 on Ebay (definitely 4 different copies)...
''Michelle'' / ''You Won't See Me'' and ''Drive My Car'' / ''Norwegian Wood'' have been shown to exist, though only in one copy each - despite turning up on 4 different websites. The next, still missing - unconfirmed, would be another 2 tracks from ''Rubber Soul'', ''Nowhere Man'' / ''Girl''.
And if ''Paperback Writer'' and ''Yellow Submarine'' do exist, where are they? .. So who says ''Hey Jude'' actually exists on 78? What nutcase? I'll believe it when I see it - maybe.

liskeard78s 6th Jun 2021 | | 78 RPMAnnette Hanshaw - We Just Couldn't Say Goodbye / Love Me Tonight (1932) | Hello - just uploaded 2 labels - sorry that they've come up back-to-front (I should have done the A-side first). I've not worked out a way of deleting / restarting. But never mind. [mod- swapped]
This is the actual item that sold for £28 on Ebay just this week. (Sure, I was outbid.) In the description the seller says the B-side becomes a bit dull towards the end. Now, I had a copy of this many years ago and found the same problem. Could this be the same copy turning up again or was it a fault with all or many of the pressings, perhaps as the stamper wore out? Who can say?
David :-)

liskeard78s 5th Jun 2021 | | 78 RPMThe Beatles - Michelle / You Won't See Me (1966) | Correction and updates added 7 Jan 2023.
Hi Beatle Lew / Tylerl - I make it 23 with a possible 24th...
(Numbers in brackets are the number of DIFFERENT copies I've seen.)
DPE.159 (9), 164 (9), 167 (5), 168 (6), 172 (8),
178 (5), 179 (10), 180 (2), 183 (1), 184 (3), (185-? there is no photo as yet)
186 (3), 187 (2) .... Next would be DPE.188 ''Nowhere Man'' but absolutely no certainty about that one. DPE.190 and 192 do appear in lists but only in lists. They could be mere speculation...
R.4949 (9), 4983 (8), 5015 (1), 5055 (8), 5084 (10), 5114 (5),
5160 (15) the Indians loved their cinema!, 5200 (5), 5265 (2), 5305 (6), 5389 (6)...
(Next would of course be R.5452 ''Paperback Writer'' / ''Rain'' if it exists. I have seen it reported that R.5493 ''Yellow Submarine'' / ''Eleanor Rigby'' was issued on 78 - but was it just someone's dubious memory? Mid-1966 is surely stretching it.)
(B.t.w. R.4949 ''Love Me Do'' is dated 1964.)
Just for the record (ha!) I have these numbers for the 17 (or 30) Philippines 78s :
EG.8883-1 (4), PAR.1206-1 (-), PAL.60101 (9), 60102 (1), 60103 (4),
60104 (7), 60105 (3), 60106 (5), 60107 (1), 60161 (7),
60197 (7), 60217 (2), 60218 (12), 60219 (-), 60220 (-),
60255 (-), 60262 (-), 60263 (5), 60269 (-), 60270 (-),
60271 (-), 60272 (-), 60273 (-), 60274 (-), 60282 (3),
60283 (6), 60284 (8), 60287 (4), 60262 (-), 60323 (-)
(-) = none found anywhere on the internet to date.
And 3 from S.America :
75202 (6), NCO 300855 (5), 300938 (3).
(There, now I can throw away this paper envelope with all these scribbles on it.)
(p.s. Apparently India went on making 78s well into the 1970s - but not necessarily Western pop music. Latest other artists I've seen on Indian 78s : Eddie Calvert, Cliff Richard, The Shadows, The Dave Clark Five - all 1965 - and The Swinging Blue Jeans - 1964.)
|
liskeard78s 4th Jun 2021 | | 78 RPMThe Beatles - Hey Jude / Revolution (1968) | Still no evidence of its existence - yet.
There was a short while ago a white label demo on Ebay of a 5 min. version of "Hey Jude" / "Revolution". Pretending to be made in India. It looks like a fake and I'm quite sure it is. The labels are way too clean and any amateur with the relevant equipment could have dubbed it from a record any time.
There is still no evidence of any Beatles 78 after "Michelle" / "You Won't See Me", early 66. Even the next-numbered "Nowhere Man" hasn't turned up yet. So who do they think they are kidding, to say that a 78 made well over 2 yeara later in 1968 really existed?
It is possible (rumour has it) that "Paperback Writer" / "Rain" and "Yellow Submarine" / "Eleanor Rigby" did exist - but they haven't yet turned up. That takes us to the middle of '66, still 2 years before "Hey Jude".
DP.570 is the number of the Indian 45 (same as the Netherlands). The 78 would not have the number DP.570.
It is known that India kept making 78s well into the 1970s, sure, but not Western pop music. (Latest I've found of other artists are all 1965 : Cliff Richard, Shadows, Eddie Calvert, Dave Clark Five. Nothing at all of 1966, so far, only "Michelle".)
Just putting the lid on it. I'd like to see this item and a few others ("Ob-La-Di" for example) simply removed. Until scans of the actual labels turn up - and then I still won't immediately believe they're not faked without some real confirmation! Born yesterday I was not.
