Vera Lynn - Home Sweet Home / Ma Curly Headed Baby (1950)
Seems a bit odd to issue this over ten years after it had been recorded?

Roy Orbison - Only The Lonely (Know How I Feel) / Here Comes That Song Again (1960)
Quote from Greg Butler in an old Guardian article:
"If you have a mint condition 78 of Elvis singing Mess of Blues, that will be worth about £1,000,"Butler says. "Roy Orbison's Only the Lonely on a 78 would probably fetch £400. That's what is so fascinating about this. All over Britain, there are families with 78s stuck in their lofts gathering dust. In many cases they are sitting on a gold mine."

Snap, crackle and pop

I think Greg is probably just citing the RRPG value there though.

The new RRPG book lists this at £400. I’ve written to the editor suggesting they remove it, as there’s no evidence it exists. It also lists the following:

Steve Stannard - Perfidia / Pepe (1961)
So was this shellac, rather than vinyl - meaning that shellac records were still being made in 1961? The earlier comment suggests that Embassy's later 78s were shellac.

@liskeard78s, many older 78s would have remained in the catalogue, I believe, so that isn't surprising. Something to look out for. I wonder when the last ones were deleted...

Ken Dodd - Tonight Beloved / It Is No Secret (1957)
More information here and here

I contacted the website, and Peter Phillips (Percy's grandson) replied. He confirmed that the two sides were indeed on the same record: "Yes, the two songs you mention are both on the same disc, side 1 and side 2. Both recorded at the same session on 30th March 1957, with Ken singing and Percy's wife Hilda Phillips on piano."

Paul Fennelly - A Tree In The Meadow / Reflections In The Water (1948)
Oddly, Paul Fennelly is Paul Fenoulhet; the giveaway is the fact that the vocalists are Reggie Goff and Doreen Lundy, respectively, who were British singers. Not sure why Paul's name was changed for the American market, although the A-side did make #21 on the Billboard Juke Box chart, so it wasn't in vain. That side doesn't appear to have been issued in the UK, but the B-side was (with another coupling).

Frankie Laine - Rain, Rain, Rain / Your Heart (1954)
The B-side, Your Heart-My Heart, spent a week on the sheet music charts in November 1954, where it made #24. There was a cover by Dick James released that month, but by the time the Woolf Phillips version came out in December, the song had perhaps been and gone.

Penny Nicholls - Skokiaan / Aladdins Lamp (1954)
That seems to have been the case, at least for the first few years? Or just in the early days of the label. Of course, apart from these “originals”, Embassy issued 45rpm covers of new songs that didn’t become hits, musical theatre scores and seasonal numbers.

Larry Cross - Three Coins In The Fountain / If I Could Write A Song (1954)
Ah, another Billy Merrin composition published by Dave Toff. The British Library have the sheet music for this one with the date 1954. So it appears to be the correct title. The BL don't have any other recordings of the title, but they don't have everything issued by any means. However, I suspect that these Billy Merrin numbers were not recorded by anyone else other than the Embassy artists. Perhaps it was a similar scenario to the earlier Woolworths label, Crown, which I recall used a popular song on one side and an unknown song on the other, as they had bought a whole batch cheaply from the publisher.

Penny Nicholls - Skokiaan / Aladdins Lamp (1954)
A perplexing one. The Catalog of Copyright Entries books usually list published music from this era, but no trace of this. Billy Merrin worked with Penny Nicholls as her musical director, so the song may have been intended for her - perhaps linked to a pantomime. It would be the right time of year, and she did perform in pantomimes. Oddly, the b-side of Gene Pitney's I'm Gonna Be Strong in 1964 has the same title, and was composed by a Merrin, but it seems an odd choice for a Brill Building-type singer. Billy Merrin's birth name was William Herbert Merrin. The publisher appears to be Dave Toff Music.

Frankie Laine - Hell Hath No Fury / I Heard The Angels Singing (1956)
Just one week on the NME chart, and the song didn't reach the sheet music charts, so perhaps its popularity was confined to the Frankie Laine version, aided by the film it came from?

Casani Club Orchestra - It's Love Again Part 1 / It's Love Again Part 2 (1936)
@Whyperion This was a cover of music from the film, not used in the film itself. It was common practice at the time to issue these cover versions.

Vera Lynn - Have You Forgotten So Soon? / Just A Few Angry Words (1936)
No. This 78 is a Vera Lynn solo release. It was seemingly common for dance band singers to have solo versions issued of songs which they had also recorded with dance bands. There's other Vera Lynn songs for which both vocal refrain and solo versions exist. Anne Shelton did Kiss the Boys Goodbye with Ambrose and as a solo release.
