mister_tmg 24th Mar 2021 | | 78 RPMRoy Fox - Misty Islands Of The Highlands / You Can't Do That There 'Ere (1935) | I believe Master Bobby Joy was 14 when he sang on the A-side. I wonder what happened to him?

mister_tmg 16th Nov 2020 | | 78 RPMDes O'Connor - It's A Sin To Tell A Lie / The Glory Of Love (1958) | The CLPGS Columbia DB series book lists It's A Sin To Tell A Lie first, so that's how I've entered it here, even though it has a higher matrix number. The book is from EMI files so maybe it lists couplings with the intended 'A' side first? The lower matrix number is generally the 'A' side on a single, but not always.

mister_tmg 7th Sep 2020 | | 78 RPMVera Lynn - Drifting And Dreaming / The Hymns My Mother Used To Sing (1948) | That isn't the A-side recording, it's the version done several years later for the "Songs of the Tuneful Twenties" album in 1956. Eric Rogers did the backing on that, whilst this 78 is backed by Bob (Robert) Farnon.
|
mister_tmg 5th Sep 2020 | | 78 RPMVera Lynn - My Dreams Are Getting Better Every Day / More And More (1945) | The A-side title is a mistake on the original record: the song is "My Dreams Are Getting Better All The Time", which is what is sung, not "My Dreams Are Getting Better Every Day"... I have a feeling there’s a pressing which corrected this error.

Oddly, this was the Vera Lynn Popular Medley No.4 in her native Britain, but I'm not sure where No.2 and No.3 are.

mister_tmg 23rd Aug 2020 | | 78 RPMBing Crosby And Patty Andrews - Be-Bop Spoken Here / Weddin' Day (1949) | Is this actually 6”? Suspect it’s a typo as these records were usually 10”. [Now fixed. Thanks for noticing! The A side composer also was misspelled. Mod.]

Ltd. England." It sold on eBay last year for £194. The last time the 78 sold on eBay was the pressing which doesn't appear to mention South Africa, when it went for £400.

mister_tmg 2nd May 2020 | | 78 RPMGwen Liddel - It's All Over But The Memories / Mistakes (1952) | That may well have been the “A” - it’s generally assumed that the lower matrix number is the A side, and I think that’s why I added the tracks in that order. It seems to be particularly true when the numbers are consecutive (say, 351/352), rather than out of sequence (351/354). However, original label listings may be the best guide to the top side, or trade advertisements.
Decca and the labels it took over (Rex and Imperial, Eclipse and Broadcast too?) had designated A and B sides printer on their labels in the 30s, but I don’t think it came back in vogue until the 45rpm era, and then not until the 60s or 70s?

mister_tmg 15th Apr 2020 | | 78 RPMChamp Butler - Looking For A Boy / Meet Me On The Corner (1952) | A-side was not issued in the USA.
|
mister_tmg 15th Apr 2020 | | 78 RPMPaul Weston - Let Me In / I Apologise (1951) | Champ Butler is the vocalist on both sides, I doubt that Paul Weston is the main artist on the A side.
|
mister_tmg 8th Apr 2020 | | 78 RPMFrankie Laine - Hell Hath No Fury / I Heard The Angels Singing (1956) | I thought that the matrix numbers beginning AA on Philips 78s generally matched the B numbers above, and 1H/2H was a way to determine the A and B side. That isn’t the case here, as both sides are 2H, and the AA number for I Heard The Angels Singing isn’t in line with that for Hell Hath No Fury or the B number.
I think the AA numbers on Philips 78s are the original Dutch catalogue numbers, since the company originated in the Netherlands. This sometimes matched the B numbers, but often didn’t.
I suppose if it’s a 78 recorded by British Philips, 1H/2H would be the original coupling, so that’s a reliable way to tell the A and B side. Philips don’t seem to have used traditional matrix numbers though.

mister_tmg 24th Feb 2020 | | 78 RPMHenry Hall - Underneath the Arches (1932) | Maybe they were very well-rehearsed in those days. I was told by a collector that suffix 1 didn't necessarily mean the first take, although that was in relation to 78s from the tape era, when perhaps they discarded alternate takes and simply labelled the one chosen for issue as -1. I suppose in the days of direct-to-disc recording, they probably rehearsed a lot before going for a take.
|
mister_tmg 22nd Feb 2020 | | 78 RPMHenry Hall - Underneath the Arches (1932) | I’m not sure that -1 means it was the first take - more likely that it was the first preference for release. Take 2 would be the second preference for release, and so on.

mister_tmg 17th Feb 2020 | | 78 RPMKitty Kallen - Little Things Mean A Lot / I Don't Think You Love Me Anymore (1954) | There was also a later pressing of this disc on the black and white label.
