rhythmdog 13th Jan 2022 | | 78 RPMThe Dell-Vikings - How Can I Find True Love / Come Go With Me (1957) | The date of the RITE pressing is indeed January of 1957. There is no evidence that the RITE pressing was the very first pressing. This does not prove that no pressing was made in December of 1956, no matter how often it is posted. There is evidence that it was being played on the radio in late 1956. A claim is made elsewhere that the DJ heavily promoting the Dell-Vikings might have been playing an "acetate". This is not likely, as acetates are very delicate, and can only be played a few times before the sound degrades audibly. So he would have had to at least have either a test press or an actual release in order to play it daily on the radio...
All that said, it is unlikely that the 78 came out previous to the 45. So it might well be the case that the 78 was not released until 1957.

rhythmdog 11th Dec 2021 | | 78 RPMThe Crests - 16 Candles / Beside You (1959) | The A side writing credits are in error and ought to read "Luther Dixon, Allyson R. Khent".
One seller of a copy of this disc said it charted #2 for two weeks in December of 1958. In that context it is possible this disc was released in December, not January of 1959, although I don't know if the Canadian charts distinguished between 45's and 78's.

rhythmdog 11th Dec 2021 | | 78 RPMCrest's - My Juanita / Sweetest One (1957) | Despite using the same numbering as another Joyce label with releases in the 1950's, this label was owned and operated by Al Browne in New York City. The other Joyce label with 78's in this database is from Louisville, Kentucky.

|
rhythmdog 20th Nov 2021 | | 78 RPMBilly Byrd And His Penguins - Boom Pacha Boom / Everybody In The Circus Has One (1954) | @fredhoyt: Looking carefully at a popsike listing for this record, I'm wondering if perhaps it actually says: "Billy Bird" and then below that "Bill Byrd And His Penguins" If so, perhaps Billy Bird and Bill Byrd aren't the same person. She (Billy Bird) is singing and he (Bill Byrd) is the bandleader?

rhythmdog 20th Nov 2021 | | 78 RPMJimmy Wright - Porkey Pine / Scotch Mist (1953) | Not the orchestra later famous for many great sax breaks on rock & roll records put out by George Goldner's labels such as Rama and Gee.
This combo was based solely in Los Angeles, and doesn't seem to have many, if any, credits as accompanists on others' records. They produced great rocking r&b instrumentals which sound rather like the other Jimmy Wright "And His Orch." found on George Goldner's labels. To make things even more complicated, the two "orchestras" (small combos, really) were active in the same time-frame, from 1953-1956 or thereabouts.

rhythmdog 20th Nov 2021 | | 78 RPMSarah Vaughan - Interlude / East Of The Sun (1949) | Given that Continental 6031 is said to be the first press and came out in Jan. 1947, and also that Lenox L-510 has a lower number and came out in Dec. 1948, I think this must be 1949 at the earliest, and not the 1945 originally shown.
|
rhythmdog 16th Nov 2021 | | 78 RPMEstell Vasser And The Joy Spreaders - I Love To Call Jesus / When The Gates Swing Open (1958) | I think this is very interesting, but probably is actually a misunderstanding of Music City's numbering system!
The first site linked does suggest that there might have been American gospel 78's made as late as 1963. However, both the link it provides and the second link go to the same site, a "fan" site that tries to list all Bay Area singles. That site has many inaccuracies and is the source site for the 1965 date. As just one example of the errors rife on that site, on the same Music City label, it references a "Bobby Smith" single on this same Music City label 731 - however, although that single exists and is correctly numbered and is from 1973, it has nothing to do with the Bay Area Music City Bobby Smith - it's actually on "Music City Workshop" from Nashville.
More likely, Music City had a gospel music series in the mid-to-late 50's that started with number 882, and includes both this 78 and another by the Golden West Singers.
The numbering here would actually place the record in the early 1970s, not in 1965, if one follows the numbers - but the "Bay Area listings" site linked puts all of those singles between 858 and 889 in 1965, whereas 870 actually came out in 1968 and 890 in 1971 - and both have the same design, a design unlike the one here.
The multicolor design used on this record with the "Berkeley 3, Calif." overlay through the logo first appeared in 1958 on (45) #815 - a bit later than the same design without the address, which first appears on #807. It continued only until #819 (1958) on 45's, then disappears until returning briefly in 1961 for 45's #838 through 840. After that, the label design has no address - #845 (from 1963), and then again #891, 892, 896 and 897 - all from the 1970's- or a capitalized address - #856 (from 1965).
I think the most likely date for this - along with the other oddly numbered 78 (888) is 1958, but there is skant evidence I can find for a date other than the typesetting style... One point in favor of a 50's, not 60's release date is that no 45's of this number have ever turned up, only the 78. Add to this a 45 with the same style (address "Berkeley 3, Calif." and multicolor) numbered 886 and with a date in the dead wax of 12-7-57... One further argument for 1958 is that only during that period did Music City also (along with the multi-color labels and "Berkeley 3, Calif.") number their records as 45-8XXA, 45-8XXB. This has the same style but with 78-8XXA, B.

rhythmdog 8th Nov 2021 | | 78 RPMThe Chords - Sh-Boom / Little Maiden (1954) | This valuation is screwy. The first and harder press is the one with 'Cross Over The Bridge' as the flip side, on both 45 and 78.
