RobertG 20th Nov 2023 | | 78 RPMOlga Orsella - Ave Maria / Und Ob Die Wolke Sie Verhülle | Side/matrix nrs are also in the run-out.
Could be linked to Dacapo? Side of matrix 8509 same recordings as Dacapo D-3300 of 1908 ?
|
RobertG 9th Dec 2022 | | 78 RPMAlb. De Booy - In Naam Van Oranje / O Schitt'rende Kleuren Van Ned. Vlag | Tiny record, just under 6".
Clearly Dutch songs (very patriotic) sung in Dutch with piano accompaniment. Sounds like an acoustic recording.
Is this label perhaps related to the tiny Colibri pocket gramophone? (Belgian?)
Trademark notice for the Colibri is however in German.

RobertG 15th Nov 2019 | | 78 RPMMontreal Masonic Choir - The Old Woman / Border Ballad (1942) | Ah, that timeframe could be it - makes sense then also for the Canadian RCA sleeve found in the same lot, it looked 1940s in styling - probably originally with this record.
Hm, also makes finding it in the North of The Netherlands perhaps a bit less strange. The North was liberated by Canadian forces in April/May '45.
Thank you for that pointer!

RobertG 15th Nov 2019 | | 78 RPMMontreal Masonic Choir - The Old Woman / Border Ballad (1942) | The record looks/feels late forties - fifties? But does still say VE, as if electric recording's still new. The number 757 suggests they made more of these private disks than I'd imagined - curious if it's datable. (I think lodge still extant, not sure about choir...)
Oddly, this record was found not in Canada, but picked up in a thrift-store in rural Friesland, Netherlands.
|
RobertG 28th Jun 2019 | | 78 RPMBeka Orkest - Till We Meet Again / Smiles | Oddly then, the label I think is in Dutch. Plus the record was found amongst a Dutch 'attic-lot'. Not sure how strict Beka kept to their block allocations?
(E.g. strykorkest (archaic spelling) is correct Dutch for string orchestra.)
|
RobertG 3rd Jun 2018 | | 78 RPMJoseph Schmidt - O Sole Mio / La Paloma | By the way, seems same recording as the 'Esta' record, but are not the same pressing/matrix.
|
RobertG 3rd Jun 2018 | | 78 RPMJoseph Schmidt - O Sole Mio / La Paloma | Not stated on the labels, but sung in German.
|
RobertG 3rd Mar 2017 | | 78 RPMThe Six Swingers - Hot Pie No. 2 (1935) | Looks like Gloria used some recordings made by Regal Zonophone to issue in Germany.
(Which might explain the meaning of the GZ catalogue prefix for Gloria Zonophone...)
|
RobertG 3rd Mar 2017 | | 78 RPMBilly Cotton - The Show Is Over / Little Man, You've Had A Busy Day | Added slightly crisper labelscans (gold).
Record probably from 1934 / 1935 - both titles were popular in '34 and recorded that year by Billy Cotton in the UK (Regal).

RobertG 26th Feb 2017 | | 78 RPMJohnny And Jones - Mijnheer Dinges Weet Niet Wat Swing Is / Het Lied Van Den Slangenbezweerder (1938) | [YouTube Video]
|
RobertG 30th Sep 2016 | | 78 RPMLaurel And Hardy - Laurel And Hardy / Laurel And Hardy In The Dance Of The Cuckoos (1932) | Not image of the labels, but added sleeve advertisement for DX370.
Take LAUREL and HARDY Home with You!
Up to now you have only been able to enjoy Laurel and Hardy in the cinema. Now you can take them home and enjoy their fun in the family circle. This Columbia is their first and only gramophone record, and in addition to their funny fooling there is given for the first time their quaint little theme tune, the "Dance of the Cuckoos"
Here is their Record
(a) LAUREL AND HARDY THEMSELVES
(b) LAUREL AND HARDY IN "DANCE OF THE CUCKOOS."

|
RobertG 15th Apr 2016 | | 78 RPMTaps Miller - Manneke Pis Boogie / How About Me (1953) | Probably 1953.
Quite a loud record, very energetic :)

|
RobertG 28th Mar 2016 | | 78 RPMTito Schipa - Vivere / Torna, Piccina (1937) | Added extra label images (undamaged B-side).
Vivere written by Cesare Andrea Bixio for film of same name of 1937. Other side also a song from this Italian movie, directed by Guido Brignone.
|
RobertG 12th Mar 2016 | | 78 RPMAmsterdamsch Draaiorgel - Feestmarsch / Sportheldenmarsch (1928) | 'Festive March' and 'Sporting Heroes March'. Probably mid-thirties.
|
RobertG 11th Mar 2016 | | 78 RPMMr. Rogatchewsky - Le Roi D'ys | Hm, it is similar for Dutch records, often pressed in Britain or Germany. The labels and catalogue numbers and/or recordings are then for the Dutch market however. Only noted as 'Made in England'.
Debatable how/where to file. Even without the expected prefix, to me this would look like very much a French release, rather than a British one.
|
RobertG 11th Mar 2016 | | 78 RPMPrince Militair Orkest - Kolonel Bogey Marsch / Hallo Jongens Marsch (1930) | Probably issue of ~1920 from older recordings. The Colonel Bogey March matrix number would put recording date around 1911/1912.
|
RobertG 11th Mar 2016 | | 78 RPMFoden's Motor Works Band - Shylock / The Cossack (1930) | Have this with Regal Zonophone label, so pressed after HMV-Columbia merger. Still same catalogue number, matrix and issue however.
Not sure if warrants separate entry or merely as label variant. (Could argue that pre '31 there can't be Regal-Zonophone issues, only Regal or Zonophone :)
|
RobertG 5th Jan 2016 | | 78 RPMPaul Whiteman - Last Night I Dreamed You Kissed Me / Evening Star (Help Me Find My Man) (1928) | Just watched the 'King of Jazz' movie - that potato head caricature is actually a surprisingly good likeness! :-)
|
RobertG 3rd Nov 2015 | | 78 RPMMusikkorps Des Ehem. Kaiser-Franz-Garde-Gren.-Regts. Nr. 2 - Alte Kameraden / Carmen-Marsch (1912) | According to CHARM, both sides recorded by the Kaiser Franz Grenadier Regiment Nr 2 in October of 1912.
Labels are of later pressing, after 1918 when it had become the band of the Former Regiment.
Small paper label states that 'this record is meant only for use in Germany'.
|
RobertG 3rd Nov 2015 | | 78 RPMMiss Elsie Southgate And Her Sister Dorothy - Intermezzo From "Cavaleria Rusticana" / Ave Maria (1915) | Labels of a later pressing, probably early 1920ies.
|
RobertG 17th Sep 2015 | | 78 RPMKaiser Franz-Garde-Grenadier-Regt. - Ein Prosit der Gemütlichkeit / Der Lustige Kupferschmied | Thanks for the link to the biography of A. Becker. (Oo, watch the '56 Hauptmann von Köpenick for an impression of the Guard.)
That video is indeed the merry coppersmith of this record. This Zonophone however does not contain the 'Grammophon Aufnahme' intro voice.
Maybe that's the 1648x vs 1648h matrix.
|
RobertG 17th Sep 2015 | | 78 RPMKaiser Franz-Garde-Grenadier-Regt. - Ein Prosit der Gemütlichkeit / Der Lustige Kupferschmied | Recordings from 1903 / 1904 probably then (oddly oldest with higher number); from CHARM:
Head: KAISER FRANZ GARDE-GRENADIER REGIMENT Nr 2
Conductor: BECKER
Venue: Berlin
CatNum: 2-40149
Num: 2271h
Date: - -04
Title: Ein Prosit der Gemütlichkeit X-20151
Head: KAISER FRANZ GARDE-GRENADIER REGIMENT Nr 2
Conductor: BECKER
Venue: Berlin
CatNum: 40424
Num: 1648x
Date: - -03
Title: Der lustige Kupferschmied, mit Gesang und Pfeifen X-20152
(the matrix number on disk is 1648h actually. (recorded by Franz Hampe?))

RobertG 17th Sep 2015 | | 78 RPMEnrico Caruso - La Donna E Mobile (1908) | Mysterious then! Indeed why did HMV add the sprinkling of different speeds to their catalogue?
As they 'set the 78 standard', having 80 or 82 rpm in their catalogue would not reflect well I think on them - not good for perception of reliable quality from the 'original'.
-Did they have access to notes or documents made during recordings that stated the machine was unfortunately running a bit fast that day? (True or not.)
-Did they have a listening session and determined what the 'true' speed for best reproduction was?
-Did they think it would look 'interesting' and make the catalogue seem more valuable?
Mysterious... ( their reasons are likely lost in 'the mists of time' by now :)
|
RobertG 17th Sep 2015 | | 78 RPMConchita Martinez - Mi Jaca / Maria Magdalena | Quite rousing. Think it is from 1939 - could be considered Spanish issue, but contains regular German copyright notice...
|

|
RobertG 12th Sep 2015 | | 78 RPMEnrico Caruso - Ideale (1907) | According to HMV catalogue, an 80 rpm recording.
According to Victor ledgers (DAHR) this was recorded 30th of December 1906 in New York, so 1907 seems spot on :)
|
RobertG 12th Sep 2015 | | 78 RPMEddie South - Eddie's Blues / Sweet Georgia Brown (1937) | Searching the hive-mind that is the internet, found some more info. (The Pathe-Marconi terms helped there, thanks!)
The Swing label was created in '37 by Charles Delaunay (Le Hot Club de France) with distribution from Gramophone-Pathé-Marconi. Published its first catalogue (leaflet really) in November '37, the first jazz label. (Delauney in '48 founded also the Vogue label, btway.)
The matrix numbers could suggest that still the recording means of HMV were used. Till then the Swing artists had been recording on La Voix de son Maitre. The UK release of the SW.8 record as an HMV swing music series suggests a working relationship there.
